Reg cleaners, I would not use them on my worst enemies computer.
As for the older machines, network them is what I do. And transfer through the lan.
You can remove the hdds and place them into a USB enclosure if you wish.
Lots of examples here.

Of coarse there are external hdds and some have backup programs, which I have never used.

This may seem like overkill, but it one of the ones I use.

I'll take a look at your links later. (I never heard of USB enclosures; once I tried to network my WinXP Pro machine and HP Win Vista one. I spent a lot of time and money, and still could not create a Network. I'lll look into USB enclosures).
I completely agree with you re: registry cleaners. 189 keys sounds like a lot, while in reality it's probably ~1% or less of registry - registry trees sometimes are endless. And the main thing - despite all 189 errors everytning seems to work, more or less. Perhaps, it's Windows redundancy which comes in handy here.
If you will, could you please explain what "file synchronization" is? (I keep some of my important personal files on a HDD and once a week send duplicates to permanently connected USB memory stick. Will synchronization make this easier?

You are right, I have to do my homework now. As I understand, the OS/PC model is not important; I have to take the HDD out and study it, then buy an appropriate enclosure. Sounds like a good project for long winter nights.
