1. I do not think you needed syba and linksys both. Syba should have been sufficient. But as you said, you have got *credit* from newegg for both. So, fine.
Before giving up on any hardware because it could not be installed, you should first try to find the drivers for that hardware on the internet by typing the hardware brand name, model (you can find these on the packaging) and the word *drivers* in the google search box.
2. I would rather you did not buy either syba or linksys ethernet cards. Instead you should have bought a wireless card. Laptops are for mobility and wireless is the way to go, not wired IMHO.
3. I was faced with a similar dilemma in the near past about which wireless router to buy, since my DSL connection had a USB modem with no ethernet, no wireless...I finally bought SafeCom ADSL wireless modem router with USB print server and it purportedly supports 802.11g+. I had also seen and almost bought the Linksys wireless modem router before I bought this one. This purchase has been working fine for me for the past one month or so - and I keep it on almost 24x7. So far, no problems - supports WEP encryption too; and has similar color as my laptop cover (not that it sits near my laptop). The signal strength I get from the internet connection on the ground floor (where the router is in a closed cupboard, and I have two other gates (of rooms) in-between and I use the laptop on the first floor of the house) is 48 MBPS usually [not 54 MBPS and as I said I have not explored how to get 108 MBPS g+ speed; maybe it will give that speed automatically depending upon whether my wireless card supports that speed (the current one supports only g, not g+)], but since I mainly use it for internet, that is more than enough (I got only 1 MBPS internet connection).

thank you so much
I'm going to "get rid" (LOL) of the Syba and Linksys wired, and there's a D-link on the way. We shall see. I'm with you, after all that, it's best that I go wireless. Especially since the 56K modem is working!!! Yea~!!

I do not understand what your 56k modem got to do with your DSL connection...? Do you have dial-up as well as DSL?

Here's the history of the laptop:
I bought it 2 years ago at a garage sale...never used it at all...I recently needed it for a trip but didn't have a connection.
I have SBC DSL with my Desktop...I called SBC/ATT and they gave me a dial-up number for the 56K modem.
In the future I want to use the laptop either dial-up modem or fast internet speed, I really don't care just as long as I get to the internet.
Now, I can get on the internet with the 56K dial-up...but I also want fast speed - wireless preferred...so I'm waiting for the D-Link to arrive to see if I can get wireless with the laptop.
Does that explain it?
I will probably use this laptop at the most three times a year...I just want it available when I travel.
