Did youn try the driver from my second link?
104456....yes i did check out your 2nd link BUT i wasn't sure what to do after i found out the modem name & driver file version #...it said :
"Modem information and driver updates
All original modem drivers for the version of Windows that came with your HP Pavilion PC can be installed using the application recovery process."
what is the application recovery process??? where can i find the steps to follow for installing it???
any help???
amarok-sookgah, you do have patience!!! Lots of this and I am sure your daughter appreciates some of that which you are trying to do for her. She should!! And like me, you may be just a bit stubborn.
Onward to battle:
I have just re-read the Belarc results and there are two items that may need help or further input from someone more knowledgeable than I.
BIOS: Phoenix Technologies LTD 1.03 07/20/99 is outdated and I wonder if there is an update and if there is, would he gain anything from flashing his BIOS?
Explorer Version 5.50.4522.1800 not THAT important but IE6 SP2 would better protect him.
The dialup modem is not reported!! Why? Was it removed in favor of DSL or... This modem quiet likely had the sound integrated. If it was removed by the owner then I assume the daughter had DSL at college and sound also. If that is true then this idea I have is of no value.
The on-board sound setting in the BIOS should be Enabled.
AFTER installing the sound card you bought, did you go into your BIOS and DISABLE the on board sound?
Now as to the "Windows98SE" installation CD; did the CD that you have come with the computer when you bought it new? Surely this is not a "Recovery Disk", is it? There is all the difference in the world of the two types of CDs or Disks. Forgive me for mentioning this if yo already know this. I am probably only a few steps ahead of you in this computer knowledge.
There just has to be something that we, collectively, are overlooking. I have had problems of my own in the past that have lasted for days and days so I know how he must feel.
In a simialr vein just have a look at the back of the PC and ensure you can see similar outlets to this image for the speaker outlet:

but...a few updates...
1) not sure about the BIOS info you wrote about...if there's an update i hope someone can come thru
2) after i did this Belarc results....i did install OE6
3) i originally had dialup in my computer, i then changed from dialup to dsl by my local phone company...i'm not sure exactly what they did to do that in my computer...i had previously unhooked my computer & hooked up my daughters to correct other problems & it went on-line no problem & had sound...but after in re-installed her computer with win98 se...we couldn't get on line soooo i finally had my local phone company come out to put a new ethernet card in her computer (right next to her original card.that i guess came with the computer) it got us on line BUT no sound !!
4) the onboard bios is set enable
5) no sound card has been installed...that's what i think i have to do next but i can't find any at stores because what they have doesn't support win98/se
6)no the re-installation disk was NOT the original that came with the computer...i couldn't find it at that time but was able to get a hold of one from a friend of a friend..i "believe" that it was an installation disk & not a recovery disk...but i don't know the difference between the two. this disk wiped everything out, all the files & programs that we had ...so i assumed it was an installion...but what do i know...i9 have since found the original installation disk.....what can i do NOW ??
104456...
1)i don't think it looks like your pic, the speaker was on a line separate from the sound BUT i can't be sure : read below
2) about your prev post & the site about riptide audio/modem update requesting a disk...i just got done calling hp customer service & they said since the computer is out of date they can't help me but said to go to their contact therm site at hp.com & go on chat & hopefully someone can step me thru this or help me get the sound back (??????)
to all...the bad news: yesterday, i had to take the computer up to my daughter at her school 2hrs. away) she said that AT THIS POINT, she didn't care about no sound because she needed the computer to do school papers, research etc...she didn't want to continue to go to the computer labs...so right now i don't have her computer to double check anything.
the good news is that, she'll be coming home this coming friday nite & will bring her hd with her.,..so that i can try to follow more suggestions from everyone to get this fix especially if i don't get a sound card
SO at this point, i'd appreciate any suggestions from anyone & then when i get the computer back on friday, i'll give an update...
so please if you can think of anything, please post it while it's fresh in your mind.
talk to yinz later.
www.tigerdirect.com have a Sabrent 6 channel 5.1 surround sound pci card for $9.99
According to the Sabrent website there are drivers for windows 98
A quick google suggests this is the combo card that should be installed on the system when new:

http://www.icioutlet.com/ProductImages/riptide.gif
It could be the card was removed hence no sound.
General Winters...thanks for the link...but when i checked on it...i couldn't see where it'll work with win98 se..please direct me, so that i can better understand this stuff
104456....this looks like what i need
assuming both can work with win 98se....does anyone know which would be better??? i'm not sure what any of the info about the cards means... i don't need anything fancy, just something to hear music, games, email messages ... you know normal stuff.
please advise quickly so that i can order it ASAP; to hopefully get it by friday or saturday!!!
Neither are that fancy, as you can tell by the price, the one recommended by General Winters would be a good choice based on price, but the combo card would be good for the fact that it too is cheap and it is a combination of a modem and a soundcard, which means you'll only need to use the one PCI slot.
The sabrent drivers for the card suggested by the General are here: http://www.sabrent.com/products/index.htm

104456....i went to the site that you suggested for the sound card & when i tried to order it...i kept getting "under construction" ...no matter what link i tried...even when i tried contact them or home page or login...
so you have their name & # that i can call to speak with someone????
The site was given as an example of the card that the system comes with if you want to purchase one I will look to see if I can find another source but a basic soundcard should surfice for your system and probably work out cheaper. These can usually be sourced from an auction site or second hand local computer fair.
104456....thanks so very much for the offer BUT i figured that i better do something when i get the computer this week end...so i ordered the card that General Winters found...hopefully i'll get it no latrer than saturday.
i'll keep everyone posted
thanks again!!!!
 oh, well...
quite a lot has happened since i last posted (NOTHING GOOD)....let's do a quick review:
1) dtr's computer (from her college dorm)all messed up...couldn't even to desktop screen when started up (HAD MANY TROUBLES BEFORE IT GOT TO THIS POINT)
2) at my home, i re-installed Win 98 SE & the necessary drivers
3) after installation, couldn't go on the internet...my computer didn't show any ethernet equipment/driver, no matter what i tried
4) my small local isp installed their own ethernet pack (in the slot next to the original card) so that it would work with the modem that they had previously installed in my home about 1 year ago (which my own computer had been using ever since & my daughter's computer also had been connected to before this last trouble with no problem)
no one could explain why her computer wouldn't still have worked with her original ethernet card
5) with this new ethernet card we were able to get on the internet BUT we had NO sound!!! (the computer's hardware devices didn't show any sound driver)
6) my dtr took computer up to school to use even though no sound while i waited for a sound card that i ordered to come in the mail.
7) ...BUT then my dtr advised me that her computer would NOT connect to the internet up in school!!!!! (as i mentioned, it got on internet here but she couldn't get it on internet at school)
8) she brought it back home & when i hooked it up...it would NOT go on internet here NOW & the info about the ethernet in hardware devices wasn't there.
i downloaded the ethernet card with the floppy disk that my isp left for me...the ethernet info now showed up but i can NOT get on the internet no matter what I did. i even had the local isp come back up & they couldn't get it to work & said there was basically nothing that they could do...that it worked on her computer when they installed the ethernet card initially & it's tough luck for me now.
9) so, we can't get on the internet nor get any sound on her computer (i haven't tried to install the sound card since i'm not on the internet) she said that she can live w/o the sound but shew needs the internet.
WHAT SHOULD I DO ???? (before i take a sledge hammer to it!!!!!)
a) should i try to re-install Win 98 SE again (which is where we started)
b) should i try to upgrade to Win XP Professional Edition OEM version (since msn won't support either Win 98 or Win ME after 6-30-06) or another edition of Win XP that someone can suggest
c) should i buy my dtr a laptop that she desperately wants but we can't afford at this time???
d) should i give her my computer (the Win ME one i'm using at this time) to use at school but then i won't have a computer & how can i then buy anything on ebay if i don't have my computer???
e) tell her to quit college as it's not going to help her get a job anyway
f) anything else that anyone can offer would be appreciated.
