"And what happened to 'View>As Web Page'? " ...? of folders ? i think we lost that as in win98, and got this...
control panel > folder options > show common tasks in folders...
it offers more functions in one place. and can be used with classic
view or new xp style.

-The View>As Web Page in Win98se let one hover the pointer over the contents of a folder and then showed those contents on the left panel. Miss that.
-I have to check the Status Bar in every folder (!) because they open with it unchecked. I tried to find a 'master check' in Folder Options but no go.
-I was able to drag and drop all my MP3s into one of my partitions and that's good, but when I try to move MusicMatch Jukebox into that same partition it says it may become unuseable.
Finally (not really), this idiotic little semi-globe resides half-hidden on the right of my monitor screen and every few minutes pops out with some message that messenger is preparing to access the internet - something like that. What the hell is that all about?

I had put the following lines in the Autoexec.bat on my Win98se machine that cleaned at every bootup:
C:\WINDOOWS\COMMAND\deltree /y C:Windows\cookies\*.*
C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\deltree /y C:Windows\tempor~1\*.*
C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\deltree /y c:\windows\temp\*.*
Kept things real clean.....any way of getting a similar command into XP?

You can right click that globe and shut it off. NIS will still work.
in the details section on the left side of the folder window..
[other 2 sections are file and folder tasks, and other places]
the file contents show up in my xp/home edition when hovering...
you can open and close each of the 3 sections using the double arrows in the gray boxes.
there is a master check for folder options, somewhere, standby.
,,,,in folder options, view tab...'apply to all folders',,,
oh that may not work for the status bar....

Make sure ALL Explorer windows are closed... Then open just one explorer window and do nothing to it except the following, tick the "status bar" option, then close the explorer window...
Then when you next open explorer it should have the status bar enabled all the time until you reverse the above process...

EDIT---> you can also use the same technique as i mentioned above to set the size of explorer windows (open a single window, set it's size and close it)... should be as you want it from then on... for a maximised window I prefer to use the "maximised" option found in the "properties" box of the shortcut, it works both ways, so...

DVOM - I've only used ZoneAlarm and had alerts turned off. I looked like crazy for that feature on Norton but couldn't find it. Also, NA doesn't keep the check in 'Auto Update on' in its properties tab. I'm soon going back to NOD (so simple, sooo good) and ZoneAlarm. But first I want to get used to what's installed so I'll know about them too.

nlday - it's getting more comfortable to use, but....but....but. I'll survive. Maybe even flourish? I'd still go back to 98se in a flash if I could. Why do you prefer XP? You do, don't you?

Why do 'I' like XP? There are many reasons now that i have it under 'my' control :p But one that stands out is being able to dump over a gig of video scraps into the recycle bin under NTFS and it doesn't even hiccup. Try that with any version of Win9x and watch it puke all over the place with freeze-ups and taking forever just to get it 'in' the bin...:rolleyes: :D
xp just doesn't crash. running out of 'resources' isn't an issue anymore.
for a minor 'freeze' of a program...
use ctrl-alt-delete > task manager,application tab > end process.
also system restore is a neat feature.
before installing any new program, create a restore point.
