I've just been reading that thread that Tufenuf linked too, and they mentioned that the update was causing problems with Office as well. So in my XP machine that I thought was more or less OK, I now find that it's hosed Office 2003 completely. Excel won't open at all and Word opens but won't load any document and then locks up completely.
So what am supposed to do here, uninstall Norton and run with no AV or firewall? I am seriously p*****d off now
And to think that I've recommended this product to people right here at VDr, too :o

On a personal level its not that bad, however I've got 100+ systems that just suddenly started running at 1/4 speed....and 5 minute waits to open simple one-page Word documents.
I emailed them, but of course it will be days before they even respond. Considering how many that I've talked to have this problem, and most don't realize what the problem even is, I would think that they would have something on their website to fix it.
I'm sure their answer will be "upgrade to AV 2004" (eventhough I still have 5 months of 2003 service left).
errrr!

This is damn annoying and it's not the first time, a similar thing happened to a lot of people about 6 months ago.

I've found the cure
Or at least a workaround for the moment. Thanks to Tufenuf for his link. In Internet Explorer go to Tools>Internet Options>Advanced and in the Security section uncheck "Check for publishers security revocation". And the problem goes away immediately.
I've still lost faith in Syamntec though.

Nice one SuperSparks worked for me too
Was gonna get one of these http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/mainboa...125082055.html

:D :D :D Now that would be really useful with the way computers are these days - I thought I was going to burst a blood vessel over this one.

thanks sparks that worked for me too. is that something i need to recheck at sometime?
anyway when i went into the registry and deleted all of norton and symantec and reloaded it acted just like i had never had it installed and gave me another year

Only fix I could find...
Close all applications.
Open Norton AV
Click on OPTIONS, then Misc Options
DISABLE the Office plugin feature
Then, do a live update and download the 5mb of crap that will probably mess somthing else up later.
After the reboot, your firewall will probably notice new versions of the software running and will ask permission.
AS for the Office Plug-in....don't turn it back on or it will not work.
Its so nice to know that they actually runied the software that I purchased from them to "protect" my computer. Now my office protection is not as good as it was... Who is going to protect us from Symantec? :(
Its probaby some ploy to get everyone to upgrade to 2004...now that they made 2003 cause problems for everyone who has it. And I have several months of updates left!

Hi frebo, yes I think this is only a temporary workaround - after all it's disabling a security feature of IE, so it's not a good thing. And I think we all deserve an extra year after this :D
ebturner, did unchecking that box not work for you?
I might wait until my subscription runs out, but I'm definitely dumping Norton.

And this seems to be an explanation for what happened, or at least a partial one:

Wished I'd have seen this thread before. I've already uninstalled my Norton 2003, cleaned the remnants from the registry, and down loaded a free Antivirus to replace it, lol. I couldn't figure out why the live update wasn't taking and then it wouldn't even become enabled. Word 2000 wouldn't open and was pis*ing me off. I did all the usual by scanning for spyware, and online scans for virus and trojans and they all came up clean. Just gave up on Norton. I was due to renew subscription on Jan. 19th anyway so screw-em

Got this from another board posted by Bob Cerelli:
This has nothing to do with Norton Updates, Viruses or Spyware etc.
For a description of the problem see:
http://slashdot.org/articles/04/01/0...tid=172&tid=95
On three computers, that had problems before and after the latest updates of Norton, went to:
https://getca.verisign.com/update.html
and installed the certificate. Now things work fine (right click and Word are back to normal).

I E-mailed Symantec two days ago about this issue and received my reply this morning. They have no idea as to what I was talking about. Talking about the runaround!
I followed the link provided by Cowboy622 by downloading and installing the revised or new root certificate and all seems to be working well for now.
My only concern is that I deleted not only the two expired root certificates that expired in January 2004, but two others that expired in 2002. Hope I did not mess up anything.
Everyone has been wonderful in assisting me to resolve my problem. Looks like a vast number of others encountered the same issue.
My hat is off to everyone on this superb forum.

Norton AV - Thank YOU!!
I spent the better half of yesterday scanning computers for the problem of Office slowing. I noticed the NAV not working right and came here to see what was going on.
Thank you to all who continue to contribute and make this board an IT MEGA Store for the latest issues with everthing computer related. Your suggestions worked this time and have worked every other time I have had problems....
This board Kicks Butt!!

I've installed the certificate, and rechecked the "Check for publisher's certificate revocation box" and all is fine again. Thanks Cowboy622 :)
