Thanks Mawil! I'll pass this nugget of wisdom along to my son's teacher in an argument over how unfair it is to dock marks on his essays! Something tells me it won't get me very far. :) To be honest mispelled words and poor grammar in posts doesn't bother me too much. I just tell myself that not everyone who uses this board has English as a first language. Again that should be obvious to most. After all the great majority here are American. :D

Plus whose english are we using British, American, Australian - other ?

Colour - Color - same word different spelling in different countries.

Precisely my point Nix but as you were quick to point out British and Australian as differing factions I have been lead to believe both were one in the same. Perhaps it is our close proximatey to the U.S. but it is generally accepted as fact that with the exception of the Americans and genreal colloquialisms eg. spanner (wrench), lift (elevator), lorrie (truck) the rest of the world uses the Queen's English. Am I wrong? If I am I would be very intested to know how Kiwi English is so different from Canuckspeak.

Well for a start Kiwi English is New Zealand not Australia.

I think we do use the Queen's english - so to speak - but I know that if you look in most spell checkers there is an option to pick english Australian vs english British or something else.

Maybe MS just think we talk in a different language because of our weird accents.

Although having said that some examples I can think of between Britain and Australia:

Ice Lolly (Ice Block), Push Chair (Pram), Sweets (Lollies), Wendy House (Cubby \ Play House).

I was born in England and moved to Australia when I was 11, every now and again I'll come out with something - English - and my wife will just laugh and say "you pom's" and your funny expressions.
