Ok, would it take alot of effort to add the line to get cd-rom support on the other cd-rom devices ?

It doesn't look like the first drive is set to Z:/R: (see above). Then the menu links wont work.
I can't at the time try the menu links etc out as i messed up my cd-rw disc (got no more cd-r or cd-rw at home) but i will get some new ones tomorrow.

I'm suprised that all of those Microsoft lines that are already in CONFIG.SYS file, as well as in AUTOEXEC.BAT), don't detect all of your CD-ROM drives. If they don't work, I'm probably not going to be of much help from here. I'd need to in front of your machine.

If you "hard code" a particular drive letter into any of your BATch files, and then that drive letter doesn't exist, the BATch file will fail.

In other words, if in the AUTOEXEC.BAT or MENU.BAT files you used a "Z:" anywhere and then changed the CD-ROM's drive letter to "R:", you'd have to go change all those "Z:"'s to "R:"'s. It would be better to stick to using the "%RAMD%" environment variable for accessing the RAMDRIVE and the %CDROM% when referring to the CD-ROM drive.

Sorry, i got it all wrong there, about not haveing cd-rom support on the 2nd cd drive.
I thout at one time that E: (that game me the error messge i posted before) was my first drive, but it's the ms-ramdrive.
Was nerver able to get access to z: when i had it set up as first drive. But everything looks good now that i moved the first drive to r: ?

btw, found a floppy that i check it out with.

In the AUTOEXEC.BAT file, down near the end, change this line:

• %ramd%:

to read:

• if not (%config%)==(CD) %ramd%:

That line is the line that moves you from A: to the drive letter for the RAMDRIVE. With the above change, it won't change to the RAMDRIVE *if* you select #7 (i.e., the [CD] option in CONFIG.SYS) on the Windows 98 Startup Menu.

I would not put tools that offer to save UNDO data in ramdrive

when it's saved in ramdrive, the saved info would be lost to you.

I know that that simtel page had a util to save ramdisk to real media, but you could just as well put (for example) a PQM diskkette image on the CD that you extract to B:, and later boot off floppy
(a floppy with saved partition info should stay with the machine anyway)

:( it's been ages that I used it, and I do not know wether PQM can save logs and info to B: if you were to run PQM off CD.

same thing with scandisk
or norton diskdoctor (which I like better than scandisk)

like Vernon says, you have to try the utils so as to find out.
Also try them when you booted off CD

(trial burns... it's a good thing CDRW exist)

Tried the menu again, this time fdisk loads whatever i a pick from the menu :confused: (don't getting that serror mesage any more).
I still got no idea what i should change fdisk to here( would guess this has something to do with why fdisk loads whenever i pick something from the menu):

scandisk.ini is useful for customising scandisk
since a CDrom has plenty room, I would copy that too

I saw that this was unfinished
autoexec.bat was used all over the place, and fdisk was the name for every program.

another note
I recall some older versions of ghost used ghost.env file
(which has the licence key in it)

have just installed lost and found to see what files it uses.
I may have an old version

still, I think it is advisable to copy more than one file into the ramdrive rather than just lf.exe
you don't need the cdrom support files
if you have a zipdrive, you would need to also launch guest.exe (and have it available on the CDROM)
but... I am sure you need the things in data folder
and files like refresh and renew
plus the other driver files not pertaining to cdrom like nibble and ddloader

a CD has ample room, but the version I have is three floppies, with folders in them.
I think these have to be copied fort the program to work

because they was put on CDROM, you may actually need to get them on writable medium, (for instance, a ramdrive)
if they need writable medium, you would have to attrib -r them too (because read only)
and, like I said before, I would want to save logs to a permanent medium (not ramdrive)

anyway, I intend to have a go at launching lost and found from ramdisk ,

I made a few changes here and there...
I used wildcards *.* rather than specify a filename here and there

in the end, YOU will have to decide how you do this...

I can tell you that the files I got off CDROM by way of xclone do NOT use this lgldrv stuff.

(like I said, for my personal booters, I started with a copy of the win98 CDROMbootfiles themselves. I saw the use of findcd, and use findcd to locate the CDROM.)

(even when I think it is not such a good idea to do this from CD or ramdrive.... However, if it can save logs to another disk, then it could be used, so I intend to run a trial of this method.)
