Well I just downloaded in 15 minutes and 50 seconds. Started out at just over 200 and settled in at 145 KB/sec. I think I will wait to see what comes up on the Windows Update site on the 9th before installing it.

I got it the day before yesterday and am waiting for the reviews too. A friend of mine has a son in college and dl'ed it with a hacked xp (winlogon hack) and guess what? He got no operatin' system. Now I don't feel like a jerk for paying up for it.
Perhaps the rumor that was going around was true? The one that said SP1 will check your code, and if it isn't authentic,or isn't registered M$ will not ask you to register, but simply trash your system?
Downloaded sp1.....
Not having any problems with it.
But I would like to know if they didn't plan on the general public downloading this, did we just download a product that Microsoft intended for us to pay for?
SP1 simply just won't install on a system with a non legitimate key....that's all. It won't do anything else.
I just installed it a few hours ago. Everything is working fine. Found another link for it here
http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...sp1_en_x86.exe
in case it hasn't already been posted.
Wow, Jubal you must have some connection - I'm on ADSL and it's downloading at 50.1K/Sec at the moment (I'm streaming rock.beonair.com at the same time though!).
Thanks for the links, guys - it'll be like swimming through treacle when the world + dog starts downloading from WindowsUpdate on Monday :D
Besides the updates and theability to turn off MS products what does Sp1 do to make you computer better. I really don't know if I need the download. I have all the updates and I am happy with the way everything is setup. I'm not afraid of lenth of download as I have cable[1500k down] just not sure what the download does.
Madc250:confused:
SuperSparks, it took a while to get a good connection, I am on cable and on a fast server I can get pretty good speeds, but a few of the connections I got before the good connection I was downloading at things like 588 bytes, then like 7 KB. Before AT&T capped the speed at 1.5 mbps I could get speeds in excess of 3 and 4 mbps. If I get on a slow server most times I can do no better than others on the same server with a slower connection.
Keep trying every few hours, you may get lucky with the connection and at a time when there are not so many others using it.
OK chaps, downloaded in 45mins, not too bad. It took about an hour to install, so have a couple of cold beers ready! Make sure you do a disk cleanup afterwards, it left nearly 25 megs of Temp files. No problems at all to report, I did make a restore point before installng, but it wasn't necessary as the Setup Wizard creates it's own.
Madc250 - it's mostly bug fixes, and there are a good few bugs in XP :D
Further to one of my threads,Win update site, about Win xp sp 1,I did mention, that windows update will trash your system if your useing an ilegal FCKGW disk or what ever,so be warned,if youve installed the sp1 disk, and you have an ilegal copy of xp,then try Win update site after.Crassssssssssssh,or some thing to that affect.
Do not buy pirate software its ilegal. :D :D
Just for the heck of it, I decided to see how SP1 did on a clean XP install. Dropped in the CD, formatted with NTSF and installed XP and let the machine reboot.
Ran SP1 and then went to Windows Update to see how many Critical Updates they showed post SP1 installation. Zero.
I'd say that's pretty good, considering a first run through of Windows Update after a clean install usually generated about 15-19 Critical Update entries to be downloaded.
As far as the Recommended Updates, there were four, one of which was for a Beta of WMP, Euro Conversion, Movie Player Update and a .NET update.
The Add/Remove programs shows the installed size as about 20MB. Didn't check the temp files, but the Uninstall file was about 140MB on disk, 200MB total.
BTW TEG, your signature link doesn't work for some reason - but its a great site, I've bookmarked it :)
The increase in size will vary acording to the number of fixes and updates you have already installed, so it could be as small as 10 meg or the whole 140 meg.
I also am waiting for some results on other peoples machines before I try it.
cheers mac
Just tried the link and got a download time of 23 minutes using FlashGet.
