Slow Typing In Replies To Posts

I know I've already posted a couple of days ago on this thread, but as time goes by this thing is really getting irritating. I can't scroll the page while it is running, can't type a responce while it is running, I pretty much feel compelled to reload the page each and every time it appears.

I'm sure the effect of the ad on people is not what the advertisers intend, it is chapping me off. Or maybe it is, I would have to admit it is impossible to ignore.

Wish I knew how to hack.

Without wanting to be too blunt, can we please have some sign of an official (ie INT Media) care factor here? This thread has now been running for 30 posts and over 3 weeks - it's obviously a problem for multiple users. Even if you just cut and paste from below, please don't ignore this sort of thing completely. Informed customers are happy customers, or at least grudgingly satisfied ones. (Yes, the VoiceXML Planet sidebar ad makes my system chug too).

Roll on September 26-27 so that the darn conference and expo is over and the ad can be removed.

It's definitely related to that ad -- not a very good promo for their wares or services.

Try refreshing the page immediately when you see it, you may get something less abusive of your resources.

Big John is the Administrator of the board but he has no say in what ads are displayed. I know he has taken up a number of issues with the powers above and he has been having problems getting a response that suits us, the members.

I believe we'll just have to refresh and put up with it.

If BJ can achieve anything else, he'll let us all know, but I wouldn't hold my breath :rolleyes:

Just wanted to add....I just ran into that XML ad on my home computer athlon xp 1900 512mb ddr ram....and had no slowing of typing.....however already posted that my work computer 333mhz celeron and 128mb ram...did have slowdowns with that ad.......

MS Web Accessories offers Toggle Image.exe. That makes it simple to toggle that offending ad off when you are composing a post.

Not all features work with IE6 but Toggle Images does.

I changed settings in Tools|Internet Options|Security|Internet|Custom Level to Prompt from Enable under "Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins". Now when I go to a VirtualDr page with that offending ad, I get asked if I want to run ActiveX controls, etc.. I click "No". The ad still appears, but does not "undulate" and my scrolling and typing is much smoother.
Having to click that 'No" seems a small price to play for this end result. And it is a situation that should please VirtualDr too.

I made that change and thought I probably won't get that ad for ages now.

Anyway I clicked on post reply and, to quote David Bowie, 'Wham bam, thanyou Maam' I was immediately presented with the prompt.

I replied No and have been able to type this post with ease.

It seems a bit strange that I seemed to get the annoying ad I reckon about 80% of the time I would be posting a new thread or reply.

It's almost like it was deliberately linked to the typing box to annoy the C#$% out of us.

Nix--thanks for posting back. Always nice to hear a suggestion works!! Toggle Images works, too, but it makes the page look like hell with all the image placemarkers. And you can't see the lovely ads at all. :D

I happened to notice that the offending banner was displayed and had not prompted me the active x thingy.

Seems they have finally provided a non flash version.

Ok, here is my take on the situation, I have a 19" monitor, running IE 5.5, when clicking on any thread the ad on the right side of the page takes approximately 1/2 half inch of screenspace, I just ignore it as it does not take enough space to annoy me at all. I also have never experienced any problem with slow typing or any of the other things that have been complained about due to the ads. If you want VDR to stay up & running it's just something that we all are going to have to live with & all the complaining in the world is not going to change it. You all know me well enough that I will do anything in my power to make this site as pleasant experience as possible for all the members, so it would be greatly appreciated if you all could just let it rest. Great, just like a few other people above you have no troubles in your particular situation. There's at least 11 of us who do though.

I just re-read every post in this thread, and I didn't see one where a member asked for all the ads to be removed. A couple suggested ad blockers to get rid of all the ads, but that's it. The complaints here are with one specific ad - the VoiceXML Planet sidebar ad - and more specifically with the time when those white arcs move up the banner. Personally, that part of the animation makes my CPU usage jump to 98% when I just sit there and watch it with Task Manager open.

Then please, take it up with the powers that be and tell us that you've done it. I used to be a mod at HWC, and I know all too well how slowly things happen past a certain level, but I think it would make people feel a whole lot better (and definitely make me feel better) if we knew that you'd done everything possible to rattle the cages that would result in that d**n ad being redone in a way that doesn't constitute an intermittent DoS attack on posters. I can accept the ads, but i cannot accept an ad that noticeably slows down my system.

I have a 17" monitor and I run a 800x600 Desktop and the ads take up 2 inches (OK, 1 3/4").
I'm not complaining (too much) about the space, just the way the ad is slowing down typing.
It must be poorly designed. Whoever designed that would probably like to know that it is a problem that needs to be corrected.
Maybe we should all contact VoiceXML Planet and tell them that they should either hire someone else to do their ads, or have the outfit (they probably pay dearly for it) they hired to do the work to clean it up (programming wise). :)

Ok Ok, the powers that can fix this problem have been notified, have already received a response from the big boss & he says he will take a look at it the first thing Monday. BJ
