Good Morning All, My my, getting restless are we? Okay, I was going to wait until tomorrow to start prebuild, but today is good enough. (I really don't like to get ahead of schedule. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ )
I. Does anybody have a prebuild checklist for building a computer? Something anyone could save that is contemplating a build. If not lets make one.
I have noticed there has been more interest in building since we started these threads last October. The challenge here is to give all new builders the information necessary to successfully build a computer and have it come up without a major problem.
And so, ye of little faith, the prebuild segment of BT starts.
2. Since noone has sent me a digital camera, I will take pictures of the build, and post them after BT is built. These pictures will be taken, I hope, in such a way as to help people who use them.
3. As has been said, the actual buiding will begin on Fri. Oct 26 at 7:00pm (Write that down QoH https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ )
4. Please let me know if there is anything that you can think of that we have left out.
The goal is to have a build from start to finish that any can follow easily and not feel intiminated about or that they can't do it.
5. The K.I.S.S principle is now in effect until BT is built.

This article, while a bit dated, is a good basic tutorial on building a system---with photos (already colored in, sorry...). Can be used as a guideline, but it is still very important to know all the specific parts you have and how they integrate with each other BEFORE building. Basic card placement: Vid AGP to AGP slot (duh), sound card best in PCI slot #2, skip a slot from there and put the modem there. Keeping the cards separate helps to cut down on any interference. Most vid cards today come with a chip cooling fan anyway; making it necessary to skip a PCI slot between it and a third card. Stays cooler that way anyway. Plan ahead--gonna put a controller card, NIC card, sound, modem, and vid? It's gonna get crowded in there and possibly present some temperature problems. Try to get a mobo that supports up to 8, rather than 4, IDE devices (2x IDE, 2x ATA) so you can possibly eliminate the need for a controller card. Helpful Tip of The Day... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

I've got 5 PCI slots and the Maxtor Ultra ATA 100 PCI card.

here's the deal if I understand you correctly. On that new mobo, you won't need that controller card--for the hard drives anyway. BUT, if you used maxblast or formatted them "weird" because your BIOS in the current machine couldn't handle over 32, then it may be necessary to reformat, once hooked up to the new mobo; if you want full capacity/features.

Does that not increase my capability though?

Look at the manual and you will find the smaller ribbon connector is for the floppy.
The next one in is where I would hook a cdrw, set as master on its own ribbon.
The primary IDE channel is the third on in. Put cdrom here and set it for Master also.
The Primary Ultra ATA100 IDE is where I hooked my bootable harddrive. Set it for Master.
the Secondary Ultra ATA100 IDE is where I have connected my second HDD. It is master also.
Also, after everything is installed, let me know if you computer is slower than all get out after it starts booting window and bios Rev number. I can get the speed up download site to you. Worked wonders for me. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Oh don't throw away the card by all means. Where it could come in handy is if you have say 5 devices. 2 CDs, 2 HD's and perhaps a Zip (or some other device). Instead of slaving the CDs and HDs, you can put each device on it's own channel (mobo w/ 2x IDE, 2x ATA connectors) and the "peripheral" device such as the Zip on the card. Better than slaving (two devices sharing one channel). What I am saying is, the card (for that mobo config) isn't absolutely necessary to make the system run. IMHO I'd rather have the hard drives on the ATA- capable mobo rather than a card.

Now let's not rush in to this pre-building phase GG1. Perhaps a pre pre-bulding step should come first. Maybe a planning to pre-build step. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Couldn't resist.
Perhaps you chucked it away, so I'll post it again. It might be worthwhile scanning some of the stuff here over the next week, and downloading stuff where appropriate.

Thanks people.
DrMDJ, Was that an understatement or lousy humor. ROFLOL. Will review that tonight. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
No reason not to review previous posts and repost which might help someone new that hasn't reviwed it as Sarkazztic is doing.

what am I doing???? Its finally Friday and I start the day off already lost...

DrMDJ is right though. When you pre-plan, it's necessary to also plan the first pre-build step. Otherwise it's difficult to get to the second pre-plan build step. If you didn't plan the step or pre-plan the plan, whatever the plan was will fail, if the pre-plan building steps are not carefully planned as part of the pre-planning process.
Uh....exactly what is it again we are planning to build here?
8 days and counting down.....Are there any burning questions GG? How about inventory? Got enough mobo mounting screws, thermal paste, proper tools, etc.?
-
Going into the Metroplex this weekend to pick up the Thermal Paste. Going to visit Fry's and Best Buy. Maybe Micro Warehouse. Think I'm okay on screws and tools. Have added a 4lb sledge hammer as a problem solver. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Maybe we should set up an agenda conference on BT for the preplan to the preplan. ROFLOL. Youse guys!!!!! https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

I figured I'd jump in this thread...it seems only 4 or 5 of you actually post here...kind of like your own little forum here, especially with a mod being here...
anyways, I have a question...who are you building this machine for?
also, since we are in the pre-preplan stages (errr, or was it pre-pre-preplan stages) whenever I build a PC, I always make sure I have a written agenda...no times..just what to do in sequence...
should we make one here? or am I getting ahead of myself?

Hi zam1el, Actually there are more regular posters than that and the total amount fluctuates, usually depending on what we are talking about. There is building, indepth explanations on different subjects concerning components, and answering questions thereof. The 26th of October will start a third online real time computer build whose name will be BT in honor of the original two experts that helped start this ongoing thread. You are familiar with both Bistro and Train as I recall. The Delta Threads are now a year old and I would recommend going back and reading them if you have time. There is information that you would not find elsewhere. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
