Did I miss something?
What's Happening here?!?!
I read the topic again, and still have no idea whats going on. You all live in different parts of the country, so you probably don't know eachother IRL but then again who knows. Cause it seems like you do, at least figuratively (whatever that means)

Welcome to The Delta Crew LogoWriter..what is going on here is GreenGoose 1 is going to build his very own computer using this forum and this thread.....He has never built a computer before and we the members of the Delta Community (which now includes you of course) are going to help him accomplish his task......Most of us have done some building of computers while some have done more than others ie Bistro (The master who sits high up on the mountain) and Train these 2 seem to have an edge in the experience department....and then there is Jtdoom or Jaak as those who know and love him address him.....he is in another country and I believe that English is his 2nd or 3rd language but he does some amazing work with hardware.....and then there is Kallikru who is pretty knowledgeable also.....as for the others I am sure I am forgetting some of you no slight intended.....Maxx is the emachine guru Daizy calls herself a LURKER but she catches on real quick.....Queen of Hearts shows up from time to time and she built the original Delta Computer here about a year ago or so....and then there is myself.....I am here pretty much for comic relief to bistro....j/k We all enjoy building and helping others build and fix problems when we can....so welcome aboard and sit back and relax and read along or jump right in and contribute....we look forward to having your input here.
Hi,
my cable connection has been acting up on me for over a week.
so I wipe the drive,
and when that dont clear up matters, I do it again, after using another network card...
(have been dabbling in doing a deploy setup script, and by these actions I have been testing it to great satisfaction.)
and then I find that ISP mail POP server still times out, and the net still acts up (sloooooooow), so I calls tha automated desk, and they do a modemtest (I figure that's pretty much like a woosh test...) and the computervoice (the voice of Zelda?) tells me my modem is okay.
hmmm, and then it starts acting okay?
what did they do?
blow the dust out of the line?
hmmm.
I hope it stays okay...
an anolog modem was faster...

Since we all bet to playing around, I thought I'd copy/paste this in here.
"I have discovered that you can restore your Win98/98 SE OS by using the PCRESTOR.BAT file found in the \Tools\Sysrec subfolder on the Windows 98/98 SE Setup CD-ROM.
To use it: open Windows Explorer or File Manager (FM = C:\Windows\Winfile.exe) and (double)-click on Pcrestor.bat. This will copy Msbatch.inf to the newly created C:\Restore folder, and then it will run Setup.exe unattended, which will reinstall the OS over your existing copy, thus repairing a possibly damaged system.
This little puppy works a treat when you're getting corrupted/missing *.VXD errors, especially if overclocking your PC."
Might be of some assistance. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
EDIT: How to Restore Windows 98 from a Full System Backup Seems M$ has a article on it.

But I'm guessint that that little trick does not work for 95, right?
It would have helped me on my bro's 95 computer a few times. I tried installing windows 95 over itself when the old version crashed and wouldn't start properly. Of course the new version wouldn't work all that well, because he had MSIE 5.0 installed, and he got a bunch of DLL errors. Eventually we reformatted. But I'll keep that in mind (as he now has ME on his machine)
And as for me building a computer? I have done some hardware work, but mostly on older computers (see sig, and i have some even older ones, including 2 486 models) so I have no idea what is new right now. Actualy I do because I regularly look at catalogs and a few PC MAG issues that I find around. So I know what AGP is, and so forth. And thanks for the hearty welcome, Sarrkazztic.

Hi logowriter, welcome to the Delta Thread. Sarkazztic mentioned some of the crew and adding there is DrMDJ who is one big time computer head, and Dodge, maxxmilian, really to numerous to mention. We do and talk about lots of things concerning hardware in between on line builds of computers. We call the third Delta computer BT and the actual build will start on the evening of October 26. We have been also known to have a little fun. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Prices on components here are about the same as over there - I'd say +/- 5-10 %. But compared to other prices here on different stuff (like fx. cars) computer parts are really cheap. Rumour has it that Denmark is a sort of "testing area" with respect to pricing on comp. parts. I don't really believe that, but compared to prices in fx. Germany the prices are a bit lower here on most parts - it's usually the other way round on other stuff.Quote:

Kallikru, How much cheaper are computer components where you live on average than here in terms of percentage? Just curious. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
I do some ordering from abroad (fx. UK) but that's mainly parts that are hard to find here - not because it's cheaper, P&H will see to that. Maybe I just don't look hard enough...?

Hi
considerations.
American rebate coupons don't work for us poor old continentals.
shipping and handling is usually restrictive, and so is import tax and the extra VAT.
even buying something from the UK is often not worth my while, because of the extraordinarily steep shipping costs.
(at least one doesn't have to pay VAT and import on those, but I read that UK prices are higher than US prices.)
so, for me it's mostly shopping around locally, but I have gotten some HW shipped from the States in the past.
I have mostly been buying retail software from US sources, tho. I can do this directly if they have a FAX and accept visa, or thru paypal.
I had a friend snap up copies of the norton sysworks GG1 pointed us to.
I will still do okay because direct international shipping was way overrated.
Some companies simply do not consider cheaper shipping methods.

"Some companies simply do not consider cheaper shipping methods" - how true, Jaak.
I once had som ram sticks sent from Mushkin (150Mhz/CAS2 - that was when RAM prices were still sky-high). I did a bit of calculating on the shipping cost and found, that the total price incl. P&H and VAT (25% here) would be ok.
I was then rather amazed to find that they (I think it was UPS) had handed over the VAT handling to some third party that charged me about $ 45 just to cash in the VAT! Pay up to pay...! "Yo! We have an apple over here - come on everybody and have a bite!"
It seems they think everybody's just a company that can count out extra expenses...
Well, luckily we don't have that VAT circus anymore within the EU.

Jaak and Kallikru, Do either of you know how much the shipping is on a CD-RW disk from the staes to your places? What I was thinking is this is a good way to swap large amounts of data which conceivably will save money. Just a thought. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

I really don't know how much it'll cost to mail a CD across the pond - I haven't tried yet. I guess it depends on how you can mail it - I think I could mail it from here in a sort of ordinary letter.
I just put a jewel box with 2 CDs on a weight and it said 108 grams. Add a little cardboard - I don't think it would pass 250 grams. And that would cost about $ 4-5 to anywhere in the world from here. You could even leave out the jewel box and maybe get it below 100 grams - with the added risk. Postage would then be $ 3-4.
But why bother - wouldn't it be easier to locate some place to exchange the data electronically? If they are not sensitive, that is. Unfortunately a lot of these "drives" (I-drive, free-drive ect.)have closed down free operations of disk space, probably due to misuse. It's a pity because I found them quite practical when I had to get 20 or 30 MBs of data home from work. It's only been 4 weeks since we finally got a burner in our dept. - and they call themselves application development department...
Anyway, I don't think the cost to mail a CD will ruin our economies.
