bistro,
BTW, I see that my local Best Buy is advertising a "Collector's Edition" of MYST III. It is about $10 more, and has a strategy guide, a video on the making of the game, and some video trailers on CD-ROM. Don't think I'm going for it though. Too much of a temptation if that strategy guide is sitting around here. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
I'm hitting the store in the morning and if they are sold out when I get there...well...it could get ugly. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

I'm sure you guys can help me with this...
I am just trying to work out the advantages of RAID, I kinda know what it is.

If it aint broke... Fix it till it is
-
Basically there are two types of raid: 0 and 1 - well, there are others but they are not for the typical home-user.
Raid 0 is for speedier access to your data while raid 1 (mirror) is for protection of your data (correct me if I switched them around..).
Raid 0 requires 2 identical (with respect to capacity) disks and will spilt your data between these two disks and thereby speeding up access, because each disk can be accessed simultaneously and thus load files faster.
Raid 1 also requires two disks of which one is an exact (hidden) copy/mirror of the other. This system of copying data works quietly in the background and you won't notice a thing during normal operation.
In case of a diskcrash you can then reboot, release the mirror, power down and disable the crashed disk, reboot and continue running off the previously hidden disk as if nothing had happened. Once you find the financial means (or receive a replacement for the crashed disk) you can then reestablish the raid 1 mirror. Until that happens your data are, of course, not protected.
You can also establish a combination of the two types of raid called raid 0+1 , but this will then require 4 identical disks.

Hello Delta People... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
You are reading a message from the proud new owner of MYST III EXILE COLLECTOR'S EDITION I know, I said I wasn't going for the collectors Edition, but I decided to splurge.
Now for the problem. The game is installed, but when I go to play it, I get an option screen for "Direct 3D" or "software". The game will run in the software mode but when I try the direct 3D, the screen goes black for a second, then reverts to the desktop. As I said before, I'm not a big gamer, so what is the difference between these two modes? I have DirectX 8.0 installed. The intigrated video is ATI 3D Rage Pro Turbo. As I said, the game will run in software mode, but I don't want to be missing anything here if at all possible.
Now for the "Delta" question...While I was in Best Buy, I noticed that they had an Antec Mid-Tower with a 300watt PS. Is this a suitable replacement for the Inwin S500 that I am having difficulty in locating?
Thanks guys. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

As for Myst Exile, I'm jealous.... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ First time I've heard of that "problem" with Myst (that choice doesn't present itself with 'Real Myst' as I remember). Not on my home system right now (gotta have my links!), but will check this out later. maybe someone reading right now has an idea. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
As for the tower, depends on the model. Antec puts out some goodun's, but are you sure you can't order the S500 online?
Might have to reinstall the game--could be a glitch in the installation. Or some conflict with D3d and your vid drivers...hmmmmmm....

Thanks bistro. I'll play in the software mode for now until we figure this one out. As for the S500, I'm trying to do some things cash so I don't strain my over-extended credit... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ It already looks like many of the other items, when I get the chance, is going to have to be on the net. Just trying to break things up a bit. And I just noticed that case when I was Myst(ing) and thought I would run it by you guys. Next time out I will get a model number. If I can get a few things locally, then maybe VISA will call off their hitman...LOL https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
I hate to admit this, but I was the first person in the store this morning to get MYST. Not quite as bad as the time about 15 or 20 years ago, that I camped out for concert tickets for "The Who". https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

bistro,
OK...now it gets downright wierd. I just recently had a problem and posted in win98, http://discussions.virtualdr.com/For...ML/042345.html At first I didn't know what it was, but if you read that other thread you will see it was coming from the game. The interesting thing is that this time I hit the Direct 3D option and the game started to run. I think there was a problem with the DEMO32 file mentioned in the above link. Still don't know what it is, but it not only gave me an error after the fact(game was closed), but may have been responsible for this Direct 3D thingy. Go figure...

In your phone calling around about parts, tell them you have a list and see what they can do. The Hercules video card was the only thing I could not get locally. They had sold out and did they scream https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ I thought it was funny to see them flopping around after they discovered that. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

train,
Seeing as how there isn't a time limit on this, I think I'll take your advice on having them order these things.
bistro,
The DEMO thing was a bit strange. I hope it doesn't plague me. After all, this is MYST, and there can be NO malfunctions. Atrus needs me...hehe https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Thanks.

Whoa! You may be right, Train. Perhaps I'll save some bucks if I go get Myst III Exile, Forrest Gump Edition. Instead of CD's, it's on 375 floppies; and the strategy book has BIG pictures.... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ OOOOOOOooooo, where are my crayons? https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Nite! and Bye for now....
