My suggestion for adding new conferences was to add these three:
1. Windows Server 2003 -- we already have this one, which is combined with Windows 2000
2. Windows SharePoint Services 2003 - WSS
3. Windows SharePoint Portal Server - SPS
Microsoft has included its collaboration software methodology into Outlook 2003, InfoPath, Project, Project Server, SharePoint Services and SharePoint Portal Server.
WSS is a free component of Server 2003. Microsoft has bought a company, Global Networks (I think that is the name) in Boston, which specializes in collaborative software design.
So there is no doubt that Microsoft is going to keep expanding the implementation of SharePoint. Since it is collaborative software, there are going to be users with questions. There are also going to be SharePoint developers, developing webparts or backend databases.
Right now, our user group is the only one in the country with a SharePoint SIG. I think that we are also probably the only user group, which is converting its website to SharePoint.
The UG has already had a half dozen small business owners join because of SharePoint and other reasons. The medical school here is looking at deploying SharePoint.
For small companies, SharePoint can be deployed strictly as an extranet to communicate with their clients and vendors, etc. There are more people interested in deploying this technology than there are skilled experts.
Because it is new, there are going to be end users with questions, and when small business owners try to do this themselves, there are going to be lots and lots of questions.
SharePoint Portal Server is really just a document management system with a great indexing schema. SPS can also handle very large website farms but to date most are deploying SPS for its doc mgmt and indexing capabilities.
The SharePoint developers, who are developing webparts, are going to be using either VB .NET or C#. Most databases will be developed in SQL Server 2000, although SharePoint can read from other databases.
Outsourcing:
We all know about outsourcing and the horrible impact that it has had on IT and on tech support or the lack of viable tech support.
What most people in IT are doing is trying to get higher up on the food chain, so that their job will not be impacted. Based on the new memberships that we have been getting, we now have a number of new members from EDS (5), Federal Reserve, law firms, MCI, etc.
One of our long-time members, who has been with MCI designing VOIP is now working on learning VB .NET and SharePoint.
The bottom line here is that we are all having to learn new skills and wear many different hats, in order to prosper.
I think that this methodology would also work very well for VDR.
Just my opinion of course but VDR would definitely be getting ahead of the curve.

The servers are USA est. which is GMT-5hrs. I'm not sure what part of the morning exactly, yet. We have a few more adjustments to make, before the actual transferring to the live server can commence.
Will it be seamless, or will we all need to reaffirm our passwords like we did in 2003 (I think) when the last upgrade took place
So far I've done 4 upgrades, and no such issues like that on any of em. The upgrade you refer to was a change in software manufacturer. This is an upgrade of version from the same manufacturer. There shouldn't be any problems at all.

Please forgive me for not reading through all 24 pages and possibly saying something stupid, previously covered, etc.
I don't know if it has anything to do with it, but I find the main site (the page you get when going to virtualdr.com) rather annoying. For one, I just find it rather useless. Maybe there are useful links there, but, unless in some exploratory mood, without a description of what's beyond the link, they don't interest me in clicking. I basically never look at that page.
But besides that, the menu. It's horrible. Well, that might be an exaggeration, but I've seen better menus. Some of the entries link to forums, others to catagories. That may not be a real obstacle but it's not very clean. Even more annoying I find the lack of information in the menu. Take the Desktop Computers or Networking entries. It doesn't say that these forums are specifically about hardware. In short, a new user won't perfectly know where to go for what until he sees the main forum index.
I find it rather all rather illogical and annoying, and as you may well know, someone browsing the web that finds a new site isn't unlikely to just press his or her Back button if something is annoying or hard to use on a site.
But enough about that. About the atmosphere. I find it to be a bit impersonal, but that is largely due to my own usage of the boards. I come her sporadically, and, I admit, nearly only if I need help. I post a question, receive an answer, say thank you and head off again. I don't know anyone here, I don't have any friends here. I know a few names of people who have helped me but that's where it ends. I don't know, I haven't extensively researched, but I wouldn't be surprised if that is how many other people used these forums.
I find, reading through posts, that the community is not entirely of a business-like demeanor, but that often is the case in my posts (in which I, not surprisingly, spend the most time), and I see similar posts all around.
I have no idea if that helps, because mods and regulars can do little about it, I guess, but I just thought I'd share my experience.
Hi NanakiXIII ... thanks for the input. Yes, we did cover much of the 'design' of the site in earlier posts. User friendly it is not and there's much room for improvement... it just doesn't flow well.
And I've been around here for some time and think of many around here as friends I suppose. But it's not like we hang out at the pub either. The quickest way to lose a friend is often by getting to know them! ;-) Don't think I'd like this board quite so much if we got too business-like ... we try to conduct ourselves in a reasonable manner and have a little fun while helping those with computer issues.

I believe the good Doctor keeps recapping where we are for those just coming into the thread. There is alot of detail involved in what has been said. Alot to think about.
Also DrMDJ is concerned about this question and I paraphrase - Why do we not have continuing participation from more senior members now over what we used to experience?
Change enters into this which is hard to nail down perhaps. But what the goal is here is to have a large number of members put in their opinion which can be difficult if they have not visited for awhile. But there are signs that this thread has gone beyond the borders of VirDr. Was some talk about putting out an email which will probably have to wait until after the upgrade. Alot on the plate right now - with midnight oil burning by the powers that be.
