I'm trying, I'm trying! https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Got a few more case mods to do--"blowhole" on the top with medium Panaflo fan and replace intake with a large Panaflo fan--regular size Panaflo for exhaust. Going to replace the power supply fan with a Panaflo also (seems to be a lttle weak). Weather service is going to detect this case as a new hurricane comin' in. (But Panaflo's are reaaaallll quiet). Should get them in the mail tomorrow.
QoH: Remember that any 3dMark score over 3000 (default settings) is good-to-go with any 3D game out there. Everything thing above that is just bragging rights. Don't burn up that nice card now, hear? https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Nite all!
aaawwwwww...I'm not doin' it. I was just teasin' ya https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
I won't be moving any of those settings without your permission.
I do have the Cyclone blowing right on the Video card in the first PCI slot. I don't see how a fan on the heatsink could fit in between the Cyclone and the Video card. I'd have to move the Cyclone fan over one slot and waste two then? The one the Cyclone would be over and the one in between it and the Video card.
The Sound card is currently in the second PCI slot.
Did the overclocking make that big of a difference ?

Know we know. That is for sure.
bistro can see a oc case from a picture on the web. And talk about going for something,?

QoH: Those are good numbers---doing well.
Had to remove the cyclone to make the mods I wanted. Don't remove yours; it's drawing some heat away from that vid card---make it last longer. I have that 'nautilus' fan blowing a good stream of air right onto the card, along with a small fan on it's heat sink. Took the clock back down to defaults and am still getting over 5000 3DMark score. Will leave it there for now. I put Thief Gold on (adventure game--one of the best) and turned the antialiasing all the way up in DirectX. Looks terrific!
Not to toot my own horn, but you're right Train--saw that case and it's potential (not just for myself). Figured it's gonna give ya'll a lot of growing room, so you wouldn't have to upgrade anytime soon. Probably the most well-engineered case around. As with other cases, one doesn't have to do a lot of cutting out to allow more air flow to the fans---the fan grill work on the chassis is already large enough for that. Very happy with this one.
[This message has been edited by bistro (edited 03-05-2001).]
5431 was the most recent score on the 3D Mark for me. I had the antialiasing turned off to see if that go rid of the sparklies during the demo. I ought to turn that back on because that was the only place I see those.
https://discussions.virtualdr.com/This is a heavy duty case. Nice and meaty. It's really very handy how easily the side comes off too.
I have been watching steve_ray's "two computers one connection" post. I am concerned about both being on the same connection slowing down my surfing (like while they do the Napster thing). Have to call my ISP and see if I can do the two password thing. We have two telephone lines. They could just set up to be kicked off if the phone rings, just like it was before on OLD. And if they need something printed...email it to me. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Sparklies? Usually an indication the card is overclocked/heat. You shouldn't have that. At the very beginning of the demo, when the 3DFiles logo comes on, those "sparklies" are part of the graphics. Also on the part where it shows the pier (stars in the sky). But id you are referring to the same "sparkiles" like on the barrels (like last time), you're never going to get rid of those completely--just part of the beast. But you can smooth them out some by turning on the antialiasing in DirectX all the way up. This will bring your score down a little, but who cares? The whole point of the matter is...do the graphics on my 3D games/presentations LOOK good?
Yep the ones on the barrel straps, and a little bit on the light post. But that is the only place I have seen them. I'll turn it back on.
Yeah...who cares? https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Yeeeaaaahhhh....who gives a sh...uh....who cares? https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
I'm here at work just sweating BB's---I KNOW those fans are just sitting in the mail box.... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Ooo,ooo,ooo,....
Speaking of that....may be a "duh" statement, but the ambient room temp where your system's located has a direct effect on the system and CPU temp. It's Winter (at least here it is) and the heat is on. Your system now has to use "warm" air to cool down. Try to keep the room temp below 72 as much as possible and that the exhaust has lots of air space around it.
QoH: Do I remember correctly that you have a Golden Orb on that CPU?
[This message has been edited by bistro (edited 03-05-2001).]
yessir I shore do have the Gooooooolden Orb.
It is winter here...probably 70 degrees today... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Might even need a little A/C.
Did ya wear that goosedown parka to work ? Hey! Do they still put real wolf fur around the collar ? https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
I might have to worry about that pretty soon. I'm in the attic, so it gets preeetttty warm up here in the summer being so close to the roof.
OK...nothing to worry about for now, but when spring starts, we may have to replace those fans or move the system into an AC'ed room.
Can't do it tonight, but if you're game, we'll try to overclock that processor just a tad--might be able to pull 933 out of it without heating it up too much.
BTW, it's easy--just a matter of changing a number or two in the BIOS. For right now, go HERE and download/install Rain 2.0. Have it run at startup every time. Cools the CPU down when it's idle. There'll be an icon in your systray that turns it off or on. Good little (freeware--yay!) program.
[This message has been edited by bistro (edited 03-05-2001).]
NO... we will not be moving to another room. I live here... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ This room is air conditioned, and insulated. It is just so close to the roof that the A/C has a hard time keeping up. Might put a window unit up here to help the Central system out a little bit.
https://discussions.virtualdr.com/Yep... I'm up for it. You need to know anything about my BIOS ? I have that Soft Menu III which in the articles I read on overclocking say is what ya want to make it simpler.
I d/l'd Rain and unzipped. Installed and rebooted and clicked on the dial up to the sound I put on the connection when it opens>> Ctmelody. (thunder and lightning) https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Go into the Soft Menu and look for the CPU info (usually under the first category). Probably will say it's running at 133/33. Highlight that 133/33 and using the page up/down keys crank it UP to just the point where the "33" changes to "36". Save the changes and reboot. What's your new speed?
EDIT: It may be when you get into that entry, it may be set on "Auto"--you'll need to go to "manual" and change those settings. As you change the FSB (above), it should show you the speed increase in mhz above it---don't let it go too far or you'll not be able to boot.
[This message has been edited by bistro (edited 03-05-2001).]
You recommend rain then? Gives the desired results?

Seek Knowledge First and All Else Will Follow
Yep. It's free, small, and very effective. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Wouldn't recommend it for processors under 650--really don't need it. Especially good for overclocking---extends the life of the processor.
QOH; You'd better hurry up, girl....I'm ready to go home https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
I just looked and it will not let me change it there but it does have a part for user defined. I'll read the book to find out how to get in there.
OK...leaving now for home...will check back when I get there. Under that entry, you'll see the 866 defined. Setting it to User Define will reveal those other settings directly underneath. There you can change it. If after changing, and the computer won't boot (but it should); just go back in there and change it back to 133/33.
These are some of the numbers
Operating Frequency 866(133)
CPU FSB Clock 133MHz
CPU Multiplier factor X6.5
SEL 100/66 #signal Default
PCI clock/ CPU FSB clock 1/4
AGP clock/ CPU FSB clock 2/3
CPU Core voltage 1.70
I/O Voltage 3.50
Level 2 Cache Latency Default
Spread Spectrum Modulated Disabled
I'm not changing anything yet. Just looking in the book for the place I need to be. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
OK I figured out how to get it to "user defined". It's way up at the very top of the list of CPU's to choose from for your Mhz. Had to scroll up to see it.
Then it'll let me change things.
What am I lookin' for? I don't see 133/33

[sounds like a eatery] oh well.
Have you used the Hercules 3D tweaker??
------------------
SMILE

Ok....one of the fans and dust grills came in. Got it on the exhaust---about 5-8 decibels quieter.
Tried the Hercules Tweaker--pretty good, but more partial to the GeForce Tweak Utility. Seems to be more comprehensive.
Can you hear these decibels ?
My B-I-L made me listen to the decibels in a car audio system. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ I have problems to this day because of it. Sounded horrible ! and he was so proud... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
I have been back in the BIOS checking it out again. I can change the 133 but there is no plain ol' /33 part to change. But then the 866 stays as User Defined. If I make it be 866 then the 136 goes back to 133. I didn't save any changes...just observing.
Did you tell QOH to add the VIA 4 - 1 ??
I am wondering if it would help ?

Hey Goose,
I just wanted to say thanks a lot for taking the time to respond to my
email. I found out through that web site that Explorer Micro is a fraudulent
company and you saved me over a thousand dollars and God only knows how many
headaches.
I am now looking at the reputable companies on the website you referred me
to.
Thanks again,

Train: QoH has an Intel BX board (BX133-RAID)--won't take the VIA drivers. Either way, won't effect the BIOS. That setting is in there; just can't see the BIOS to help.
QoH: Set that 133 to around 136 or 138 (in other words, about two notches up--what ever they may be); ignore everything else you see and save the settings. On reboot, check to see what speed it's showing. (The "CPU multiplier" is locked on that chip--you won't be able to change that).
This is what it says now. Rebooted just fine. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Operating Frequency USER DEFINED
CPU FSB Clock 136MHz
CPU Multiplier factor X6.5
SEL 100/66 #signal Default
PCI clock/ CPU FSB clock 1/4
AGP clock/ CPU FSB clock 2/3
CPU Core voltage 1.70
I/O Voltage 3.50
Level 2 Cache Latency Default
Spread Spectrum Modulated Disabled
OK...if you have Sisoft Sandra installed, go to the CPU/BIOS icon and see what CPU speed it gives you. If not, reboot and pay attention to the CPU line that says what speed you're at. Post back.
USER DEFINED:
When you choose the User Define, you will be able to set the following five items:
CPU FSB Clock:
66MHz
75MHz(1/2)*
83MHz(1/2)*
84MHz - 200MHz
Multiplier factor:
x2
x2.5
x3
x3.5
...and on thru x11
SEL 100/66# Signal:
Default and low
AGP Clock/CPU FSB Clock:
1/1 and 2/3
PCI Clock/CPU FSB Clock:
1/2
1/3
1/4
AGP Transfer mode:
Default
Normal
CPU Core Voltage
I/O Voltage
In Order Queue Depth
1-8
Level 2 Cache Latency
Default and 1 thru 15
Looks like more than 5 items to me. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
EDIT
891MHz
I had to do it twice to catch it... then I figured out I could use the Pause/Break button https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
[This message has been edited by Queen_of_Hearts (edited 03-06-2001).]
Just rambling.....I edited, then I saw you posted at the same time as me on the upper post. You may think I didn't do it yet so I am bumping with this post.
OK...you at 891mhz--that chip is capable of more---at least break 900. Up it one more notch. I think that'll do it.
I set it at 138 this time and it says 904MHz now. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
When you break that 900, the next thing I want you to do is go into windows and run the 3dMark demo (not the benchmark), then reboot back into the BIOS and check the CPU temperature. Not sure what entry in your BIOS has that, but most newer BIOS's have a temp check. Post back with that temp reading.
