OK. I'm reviewing. I forgot about the CAB files, Mosaic.
I looked again in Start> Run> C:\Windows\Options and get this message:
Cannot find the file named 'C\Windows\options'{or one of its componants}
Make sure the path and file name are correct and that all required libraries are available.
I went to Start> Settings> Folder Options> View ...show all files first to be sure it was checked.
So can I make my own folder in Windows and copy them to it? Then do the reg thing so it finds them?
The : omission was a typo. I even tried with a capital O in Options.
C:\Windows\options is what I tried.
I'll do this now. Thanks Mosaic. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Now I can throw the CD away??? https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
I'm done.
Now for some more review to see what else I missed in the frenzy.
Yep. I'm working on those monitor drivers now.
Morning All, Tweaking and peaking continues on QoH's computer. The detail of the information being presented also helps on related questions that anyone would have concerning the operation and how a computer works. Later. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Been tweakin'. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Went back through the last three threads and picked up a few things I had missed.
CAB files are on the Hard Drive.
Drivers for the Monitor are installed. My screen looks much better now with the new drivers.
Second set of tweaks for the Video Card are implemented, and the NVMax. I did NOT overclock it... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Ran the test again and score is almost the same 4512. It was 4514 the first time.
Something I noticed in the demo (you were right about the sound...it ROCKS https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ ) was the bands around the barrels are kinda sparkly. I may have been so overwhelmed (and nauseated) the first time I watched the demo that I didn't notice. I haven't watched since the new Monitor drivers, though. Are those sparklys normal...like a reflection of the metal ?
Thorough scandisk and defragged. Boy, did that scandisk take forever!
Can I get the WinME defragg and trade it out for this one?
CDROM tweaks and reg addition done, too.
Not done the Windows Updates yet.
[This message has been edited by Queen_of_Hearts (edited 02-10-2001).]
What the "sparklies" are is called aliasing--a 3D gamer's arch-enemy https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ . In a nutshell, it's pixelation of lines--system can't draw them "smooth". Howsomeever, that card CAN do anti-aliasing--smooth them out a little. But at some cost...framerate won't be quite as fast, takes more vid memory, etc. If you aren't a hardline gamer and could care less about high frame rates (just as long as it "looks good"), you can activate the anti-aliasing to smooth it out a little. Mind you, it won't get rid of all of it, just make it look a little better. Me, I just turn it off when benchmarking--just to watch the score go up a little. But if I'm playing a 3D game, I like to turn it on for a little more smoothness. Go to the Additional Properties under the GeForce Tab in Display Properties, then to the OpenGL Tab, Full scene antialiasing (FSAA) method and select 2x2(LOD Bias). Exit out. (This also makes the change automatically in you current NvMax setting--no need to change it in there).
P.S.> Sure. The Windows ME defrag would be fine and perhaps a little more efficient.
[This message has been edited by bistro (edited 02-10-2001).]
Thanks, bistro. I fixed the OpenGL settings. I never would have figured those settings out bistro. You musta spent hoooouuuurs fiddling with that thing. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
I need to get adaware too, while I'm at it.
I believe AdAware 4.0 is on the CD.
Don't get too wrapped around the axle about 3DMark scores. It ain't gospel. I've seen consecutive testing scores go up and down as much as 200-300 points. It's just a guide. (Even though there's some 3Dmark enthusiasts out there who would declare "Blasphemy!").
When it all boils down to it...are you happy with the settings? Do they make your game look good when playing? etc. It's fun to see how fast it'll go, but getting 2 or 3 more frames per second won't make any difference to you visually, believe me.
Yes adaware is on the CD. I just checked.
I didn't buy any games yet. I don't have any idea about those. I did look at the boxes in the store. What's a good one? https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
I'll have to be sneaky about playing it or else I'd have to hook up OLD again to get here.
I am fixing to post something on the Hardware board for Texas Angel. Her monitor is not working. Don't want to put it here.
How many monitors has TA got? https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Seek Knowledge First and All Else Will Follow
Two right now, cause she bought a new one. But if it's not the monitor she's taking the new one back. JAL just posted to the thread. I hope it's the battery.
A friendly word of warning: Don't tweak so much that you end up twicking Windows. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Some tweaks are compatible with others and you may end up with one big mess. Go slow; and if you really don't understand the tweak, don't do it.
Hmmmmm....games huh? Wanna really see what that thing can do, huh? https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Well, what's your interests?
Combat-type: Go through the woods or a maze and blow away everything in sight.
Sci-Fi: Go through space and blow away everything in sight.
Flight: Fly through the air, piloting everything from a Cessna to a Harrier jet; crash and burn in exciting exotic locales.
Strategy: Rule from an aerial view of empires, cities, civilizations; build, construct, then go to war and blow away everything in sight.
Video-type games: Command and control cute little characters as they go through mazes, meet other cute little characters, then blow them away and everything else in sight.
Role-Playing: Take on the personality of a mystical character in a mystical world of fantasy; throw spells, battle evil beings, enter the netherworlds and blow away everything in sight.
Mystery: Take on the role of a daring-do investigator or some other character--find out Whodunit; solve puzzles all along the way; and if you can't solve the puzzle, blow it away and everything else in sight.

Reread your statement, I burst out laughing. you otta be a comedian. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Your computer sure came up well and that's only your first one. Wait for another year or so and see where we are. I am very envious of where your at right now, not jealous, just plumb envious. How about posting a picture of it?
The last three threads have alot of hard to come by info that has been generated. Noticed that in going into the Virdr search that when a subject is called up you see more and more of Operation Delta as a reference. There has been alot of input by alot of people. Makes me feel good that we are helping in another way now.
We sure got mixed up with some fine folks here. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

We sure did greengoose. I have been laughing for the last couple of months enjoying myself tremendously. Boy I need to get a link to Websters on here quick.
Bistro, I can tell you the only games I have played and enjoyed (or watched being played by the kids) were on Super Nintendo or Nintendo 64. I liked one called Flash Back on Super Nintendo. I played it until I figured it out and beat it. No cheats either.
The Mario Cart makes be nauseated (seriously).
I thought Zelda was pretty cool watching the kids play.
Those helicopters in the demo looked soooo real. We used to have Atari with a flight game and that was fun. I thought that felt pretty real at the time. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
I love Zelda. Still haven't figured it all out. And its an old game. Betcha some of these newer ones are sumpin' else.
Bistro, Feeling better yet?
------------------
Seek Knowledge First and All Else Will Follow
When I got my first 3D card, it came with a copy of Forsaken; a game similar to Descent.
Played it for quite a while til finished. (But I'd always feel a little nauseated afterwards---real motion sickness. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
If you're suseptible, avoid those kinds of games---they're getting more and more "real".
If you like puzzle-solving, might want to try out something with a little less roller-coaster effect. Perhaps "Real Myst". But I'd advise you also get the strategy (read: Answer") book along with it--you'll tear your hair out with some of the spots. Will keep you entertained for days. Don't play too many games as of late---too busy trying to help this lady in texas put a computer together..... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
My favorite ones have been 'Myst', 'Tex Murphy' series (don't make it anymore https://discussions.virtualdr.com/), 'Unreal', and the 'Thief' series.
Have to read the box/specifications carefully--read up on the Net what others say about the game. Pay attention as to whether it's predominately a keyboard or mouse controlled game--some of those games have so many keyboard controls, it takes an engineer to figure them out. Almost all of them have some keyboarding involved. Usually takes just a short time to learn and a lot of them come with a template sheet for reference.
Start simple...say,..."Barney Does the ABC's--In 3D!"...and work your way up from there.... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Gee...I really wish they had a spell-checker on this forum....
[This message has been edited by bistro (edited 02-10-2001).]
I'm no emgineer. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ So I'll read the boxes carefully. Got my pocket dictionary in my purse.
I watched my nephew playing some computer games that didn't look real at all compared to Super Nintendo. Kinda flat looking down on the layout. If I'm gonna do it...I want it to at least look like I'm there.
So...ya been too busy, huh ? https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
I sure am glad you took time to do this. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
You're going to see that difference between PC games and Super Nintendo. Differences in chip sets, blah, diddy-blah-blah. Won't go into all the gory details. there's a few out there that have been released in PC format. Haven't really kept up with them. When I go to the shop, I've been gravitating more and more to the graphics and apps sections. I might wander over to the Gaming forum and see what they're gossiping about...
...gaming forum ? hmmmmm https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
We have one here ? Another one of those topics I have ignored.
Go up to the top and click on Hardware, then Gaming hardware and Software. Was just there--some real hard-core gamers there playing stuff that sounds pretty heavy https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
I found a thread where they were talking about favorite games. As usual, that led to another site which sparked an idea and I found some sites with demo's you can download...playable. Like to see what they are like before you buy?
I am going to check into that. Also the 3D link you provided. I know that is on OLD but it may be back in these Delta threads too.
Was that the 3DMark site?
They look pretty big. But I'd like to see before I buy. I'm wondering if they have them like at ToysRUs on the Nintendo stuff set up in the Computer section where you can play or at least see the graphics before you buy ?
QOH
Near bottom of page is WinME Defrag just in case you do not have it already.
Nice visits today, tweeked a couple computers, PowerfulPC, WinMe defrag, and on one set min swapfile to 200MB [brother does serious some graphics, and boy did he SMILE] at least 4 to 5 times faster in rendering up the pictures.

Bet he was smilin' ! Thanks Train, for reminding me about the powerful pc. I did finally find the ME defragg. I did a search here and kept getting dead ends on the links.
I still got all this stuff on OLD I can't get off yet.
Almost got OLD's CDROM working tonight and was updating the drivers when it asked me to insert the Win 98SE CD to extract what it needed. Oh surrrrreeee ! https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Now how'm I sposed to do that ??!!! https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
So I need to fix it's floppy drive first and get a copy of that file it asked for made on a floppy on Mercy. That ought to do it.
QOH
Isn't thinking like that dangerous???
What I did was when I made the PowerfulPC reg,
I saved it in a folder I named Powerful PC. That way it is readily findable and I can right click and send it to a floppy where I saved it and WinMe Defrag. Now here is the link to PowerfulPC.

Thank you.
Now I just did the Windows Update thing. It downloaded and when it finished it told me I needed to restart Windows for it to install and asked if I wanted to do this now? I said no so I could shut down correctly (I had a couple things running I wanted to close first) so I did that and then rebooted. Nothing happened. I thought it would pop up and say "I'm installing this now" or something. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ How do I know if it did it?

Morning All, Tweaking and peaking continues or is it the saerch for knowledge. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ The search function that Train refers to is very good and there are different scenarios that you can enter. I like to match subject and author. It doesn't take to long with this method to find out which member or members are good at a particular subject. Good reference tool once its organized to your requirements. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Morning Mosaic,
Just got a couple little things. Shut down patch.
I watched the boot but this thing only takes 20 seconds from the time I tell it to restart to back up and ready to go. It flies by pretty quick https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
I thought I'd see something too but it didn't . I went back and those things were not in the "Catalog" it gave me of things it thought I needed any more.
I still need the 5.01 SP1 but it takes HOURS to install. Gonna wait till real late to do that one too.
I still cannot close that stupid preview pane! Hopefully the sp1 will take care of that. Yes I remembered the AV.
Prices "keep falling on my head". https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Train, Tried WinME defrag. Shortest time yet at 7 minutes. Powerfull PC looks interesting when I read it over.

QOH
You might want to keep this.
You can go to this url and product update patch for this.
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
But, what you might want to do first is,
go to start>run (type in) msconfig > OK
On the General tab put a check in selective startup. click the advanced button toward the bottom right, and put a check in disable fast shutdown. click ok ok reboot.
The shutdownpatch removes the ability to do this
Two fast shutdowns = a mess
What preview window??Windows startup Logo?

No, Outlook Express. It just keeps being there. I keep unchecking it in Tools>Options>Read tab and it's still opens. I know it locked before, so the little double arrow to open it was not even showing up.
Talking about the preview pane in OE? Look under View>Layout. Can turn it off or on there....
[This message has been edited by bistro (edited 02-11-2001).]
Good Evening,
I tried there too, bistro. Had forgotten it was there until I saw your message. But it still wouldn't close.
I just finished installing 5.01 and sp1
The preview pane was closed when I opened Outlook Express the first time. So something must have been wrong with it originally. It's fixed now. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Train,
The shutdown patch I did last night must have taken too because fast shutdown is not in msconfig.
QOH
Why do we always learn after the fact. ???
Yes, that takes effect immediately. So, I use the other way first. Just gives me a option incase of further problems.

Well, so far I haven't had a problem shutting down. Just know it OLD used to, before I knew better then to leave stuff running. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
This one shuts down and comes right back up before I even blink and it's ready to go again. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
I tried to get rid of that Zone Alarm splash with Whitphils nosplash addition but it's still popping up there. I'm working on it.
