Thanks Mosaic. I tried it on this old thing and it worked. I have the other one about the cascading Control Panel already on the new one too. Lazy ain't I ? https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Well...I ran the sfc and found a couple of files needing replaced. My CD player couldn't find them. It shows files on CD's but when asked to read them it won't do it. So it's a new one tomorrow. I'll get a good one. You're right bistro...this one deserves the good stuff. Might need some new speakers too. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Morning All, Another night of moving forward. Looks like all the Queen of Hearts needs to do is tweak and peak with lots of playing. Great. Later. Be Well. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Good idea, Mosaic1. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ We'll get her to do that, if we can slow her down a little... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Think I have the Reg hack to point the system to always look for the cab files on the hard drive rather than the Win CD--do you have it handy?
Still need to know from QoH:
Is the sound card working correctly?
TweakUI: Installed? There's some adjustments in there that'll speed up performance. (Later, we can switch that to XQET-Setup, but that's a bit more involved).
DUN: may be messed up. Will check when ready to install the modem.
Monitor: driver installed? Monitor Tab in Display Properties showing up?
Did you play the 3DMark demo? Watcha think?
Need to install as a minimum: Antivirus, firewall.
Put just the basic programs you need on the system---no need to put everything you own if you don't use it very often (even if you have the space for it.) Sometimes I'll install the program, use it for a few days, then uninstall it if I know it won't be of use for a while. Keeps the hd uncluttered.
Games: If you're going to put a CD game on the system, you now have the room to do a Full install...recommended. The game will still need the CD in place, but it will access the faster hard drive more often rather than the slower CD-ROM. As soon as you are finished with the game, uninstall it. No need to keep it on.
Once you have the basic stuff installed on the hd, do a scandisk and defrag. Do a Thorough scandisk rather than the standard. This will take a while, but it will be worth it. Then you shouldn't have to do one for quite a while--just the standard scandisk.
Still working on that vid card tweak. Will post it later today for everybody's benefit.
Readers beware: the program and the settings are for Nvidia-chipset vid cards only.

I have no programs to install. OLD has only the bare minimum...so don't worry.
Ran sfs but did not replace anything.
Some PRECOPY thing it cannot find.Probably due to the CDROM.
Sound card = Don't know / speakers no sound.Even quit that loud beep when desktop first appears. Checked settings not muted they work on OLD.Getting new ones anyway if I can ever get rid of all these customers. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Tweak UI not installed yet cause of CDROM deal.
DUN is messed up. Nothing happens when Icon clicked. Have unchecked rebooted and rechecked in Windows Set up.
Monitor driver not yet. Need to get connected first? It says Default Monitor on NVIDIA GeForce2 MX right now.
Yes I ran the 3DMark Demo. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Good thing I had not had lunch ! https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Then ran it again for my daughter. Probably a mistake. Now shes bugging me already.
Haven't been shopping yet. Working. Be thru in a few minutes.

Mosaic and Bistro, Notice we've slowed down abit. Catch your breath now 'cause she'll be back. Neat isn't it? I can see power syndrome already. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Mosaic, Checking my e-mails found one I sent to the others but not to you. Will send tonight. Thanks for all the help you've given us. You have some good stuff scattered around out on the forums that I have been following. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Ok...was thinking about just typing this one up and just e-mailing it; but will post here for the benefit of any readers who have, or might be getting a GeForce2 card. The following applies ONLY to GeForce vid cards!:
Have tried out a few GeForce Tweak programs and NvMax appears to be the best--more user friendly and will run in your Systray.
Very unobtrusive.
1. Go HERE and download NvMax to an empty directory. Can make a directory under C: and call it "Hold", "Wait Here", "Stupid Downloads", whatever. Good place to put all Internet downloads so you can get back to them one at a time at your leisure; they're all centralized and separated from other files for AV scanning, etc.
2. Install the program. Hit "Accept" (if you didn't plan to accept it, why did you download in the first place?) https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
3. Go to Programs under your Start Menu--NvMax should be there. The program will not start automatically on boot, so click and drag it to the Startup folder. This will have it start on bootup and will appear as an icon in the Systray.
4. Click on it to start. Then click on the Systray icon that appeared there.
5. A menu will pop up. Take it slow and easy here...one step at a time. We're going to make a "custom" setting now. CHECK ONLY WHAT IS LISTED BELOW--no matter how tempting that 'other' setting is....
6. Go to "System" (at the top). CHECK "Enable Coolbits" and "AGP 2x"--if you have AGP 4x on your mobo, check that one too.
7. Go to DIRECTX. CHECK "Fog Table Emulation", "MipMap Method", V-Synch:OFF, LOD Bias Adjust: Max Quality.
8. Go to OPENGL: CHECK "Anistropic Filtering", "Buffer Region Extension", Texture Quality: FAST, V-Synch: OFF, Texture Colour Depth: AUTO, Buffer Flipping: PAGE.
9. Now go to SETTINGS: Make sure it says "GeForce 2 MX" or your GeForce 2 card. If you're using the Nvidia reference drivers (and you should), it'll say the former.
10. Go to PRESET: select SAVE TO PRESET. Call your custom preset "Pref 1", Preference 1", "Custom 1", "Alakazam", whatever ( a recognizable name). Save it. You may get a warning message that the preset can't be found, or something to that effect. Don't worry about it.
11. Go back to the main menu, then re-enter the PRESET menu; you're preference should be there. DOUBLE-click (no single click) on your "Custom" preset. It will "flash" to let you know those settings are now active.
12. Back to the Main menu. Click on "HIDE" (not EXIT). The program will go back to the Systray.
13. Run a benchmark program like 3DMark2000 and take note of the score and that it was under "Custom".
14. Go back to NvMax and select each of the presets, one at a time, and benchmark each; take notes! (With 3DMark, use the Default setting; unless you're monitor can't handle it--then change the test to 800x600x16). After benchmarking, you'll know which Preset tends to give you better vid performance.
15. Realize that 3DMark scores can differ slightly even under the same Preset. If you have the time, you can b'mark two or three times under the same Preset and get an average for a score. I've found that on the average, the "custom" Preset as above seemed to produce better scores than the program Presets. Watch out for the QUAKE Presets--they'll brighten up your display considerably--not exactly what you'd want on a day-to-day basis. Really only good for when you want to play Quake.
Enjoy! It'll be fun to experiment.

I just KNOW I'm opening a "Pandora's Box" here, but what the hell.... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
When you checked that "Enable Coolbits" under the SYSTEM in NvMax---it did a magical thing.
Right-click on your Desktop to go into Display Properties. Go to Advanced and look under the tab for the card and go into it's Advanced properties. Another Tab (for Hardware)!!!! Glory Be!!! You have entered in the Hidden Setting of the GeForce NetherWorld!!!! You can overclock that card!!!----ooooooooooooo!
I'll warn you now.....don't do it unless you've got extra cooling in your system--like another intake/circulation, exhaust fan and perhaps a small fan attached to the heat sink of the card. Found with my system (equipped with the above-mentioned), that I can overclock the MX card 190/190 and maintain consistent video---anything over that and will get occasional hang-ups.
You have been warned.

This come from Compter Stupidities.
Tech Support: "Ok, I am going to transfer you to a technician."
Technician: "Ok, you want to put a 133 processor on this board?"
Me: "Yes."
Technician: "This board only goes up to 100 MHz. You can use it with Pentium 75, 90, or 100."
Me: "That's a disappointment -- I wish you hadn't sent me a machine with no upgrade flexibility like that."
Technician: "Well, you can put the P133 in -- it will run at 133, even though when it boots it will only say 100."
Me: "REALLY? In the five years I have been working with PC hardware and software, and of all the machines I have upgraded, I have never heard of this. Are you sure you are correct?"
Technician: (long pause) "Um, no."
Me: "You just wanted to get me off the phone, right? Well, I just wanted the answer about my board -- if the answer is no, fine, but don't lie to me."
Technician: "Um, sorry. No, you can't upgrade that board to a processor faster than 100."

THAT'S the one, Mosaic1...thank you. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Have mine set up that way (cabs on a different drive)--but I'm at work; no access to my reg hacks.
QOH: Go into Add/Remove Programs under Setup; have your Win CD in (new one installed yet?). Look under Communications (as I remember--on a NT machine at the moment) and look for Dial-Up Networking. If it's checked, uncheck it and apply. If unchecked, check and apply. Anybody on a 98 and can confirm? Sorry...but got memory creep...creeping away that is... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
If I'm wrong...will check when I get home and correct. Mosaic1?
BTW QOH---crank up those new speakers and play that demo now (optimal resolution).

That's where it is, bistro. I have done that. Unchecked and rebooted hoping when I rechecked and rebooted it would work. Nope.
I'll try it again.
I peeked for the Options\Cabs and it's not here. I have "show all files" in File Options "dotted"
-
OK what happens is when I recheck it after rebooting, then it asks me to insert the Win 98SE disk. So I do. Then I put D: in the little box so it can look there. When I click OK I hear a little tick but then it goes right back to the same little screen.
It says the file pppmac.vxd on Windows 98Second Edition cannot be found.
Set up could not find a file on the
specified path. If the path appears below make sure it is correct.Click OK to try copying again.
Each time I hear that little tick and the screen pops right back up.
I soitanly do have it installed. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

just got on and read the above posts---thanks Mosaic! Haven't felt too chipper this afternoon and evening--just got up from a rest. May have to hit the hay early, but wanted to be around. QoH: are you serious about those speakers?? https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Congrats! But I thought it was a boy? https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

It is ! Lord have Mercy! https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
This is great !
Pages are really slow to load need to odo the iSpeed thing too.
Lots of stuff to adjust and add. This keyboard is strange too.
-
Er...exactly what do you mean by "strange"....
-
Unusual! Like me https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Just feels different..kinda touchy
My addresses didn't work on the floppy neither did my bookmarks. Oh well. I'll worry about fixing that later.
Get this one running good then go back and repair OLD.
-
No it's 5.0 something. needs the updates.
Another thing to do.
I think it just needs a little adjusting like we did on the other one. That file did transfer to this computer on a floppy. Hopefully it is in tact. If not I'll download it.
Got to put the other stuff on bistros CD on here too.
Just closed the preview pane on Outlook Express.
-
I'm going to shut down and install the iSpeed and the new stick of RAM too.
-
Thar' she goooooooooes...somebody stop her!!! https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
To install TweakUi: Right-click on the .inf file on that CD--it'll install to Control Panel.
Suggested Settings:
Mouse: Menu Speed--one notch above "Fast"
If you have a wheel mouse--check the box
General: UNCHECK everything under Effects. Those Windows effects chew up memory and slows performance--cute at first, then irritating. Can check "beep on errors'.
Explorer: Hate that little arrow on shortcuts (I KNOW it's a "shortcut"--they're ALL "shortcuts"). Select No Arrow.
Uncheck all the below except "Save Explorer Settings" and "Adjust case of 8.3 filenames".
IE 4: Check "IE 4 Enabled" and "Detect accidental double-clicks". Don't worry that it says "IE 4".
Desktop: You can use this one to remove those occasional "unremovable" icons off your desktop. Comes in handy.
My Computer: Leave alone.
Now click over on the arrows for more selections.
Control Panel: just use if you want to get rid of some icons in Control Panel. best to leave alone.
Network: You don't have a network (or is THAT in your plans too? https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Leave alone.
New: In an Explorer window, when selecting File>New, the pop-up menu will give you a choice of Folder or Shortcut, then lists some applications to associate with what you're making. With just about every app you install, Windows puts an entry in here automatically---can get crowded to the point where you can't select anymore--too big. This feature allows you to get rid of those entries that you don't want there.
Add/Remove: Does NOT Add or Remove. Sometimes Add/Remove programs under Control Panel doesn't get rid of the entry after removal--the program is gone, but the name remains. This feature will get rid of the name.
Boot: CHECK "Function keys available", "Start GUI automatically", and "Allow F4 to boot...". UNCHECK "Splash screen"--this gets rid of the Windows splash screen on bootup: speeds it up a bit, but if you REALLY like that splash screen, then leave it checked. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Repair: About the only one here to mess with is Repair Icons--whenever the desktop icons do not display correctly--clears and repairs the icon cache--comes in handy from time to time.
Paranoia: Named after my personality. Self-explanatory entries--your choice. Same for "play CDs" entries. All mine are unchecked. Don't like CDs playing automatically as I insert them.
There...long enough? https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Have fun with it. Watch how fast your start Menu pops up after you make these settings--be thrilled and amazed....
-
Oh yeah...that did it!
The RAM is in, too. and iSpeed tweaks done. There we go. Much better. Thanks to bistro.
These windows flllllllllllly open now! https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Speakers are doing fine. Sounds like a thunderstorm when the desktop appears. Neat.
I have to check out those sounds in there too on the Sound Blaster thingy now that I can hear them.
...oh...and I was teasing about the Cerwin Vegas

https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ I remember when I installed SB Live! the first time...inadvertently had the speakers on almost full blast. When Windows came up and that thunderclap came on, I fell out of my chair...you oughta hear it w/ 4 speaker (and subwoofer). Yikes!!!
You can copy those WAV files on the CD over to Windows\Media folder. Try the THX Sound for a Windows Start. Not bad.

Speed demon is right Train! This is unreal !
It shocked me when I first heard the thunder too. I don't think I set it for that while checking it out earlier before I had sounds.
Oh.. that cyclone fan is tight in that space between the Video card and the sound card. It's not touching, though. Is that ok ? I skipped a slot like you said for the sound card and put the cyclone in that PCI slot space blowing on the Video Card.
I have done the tweakui tweaks.
One thing I am not going to be able to handle. I have tried four times to tell it to stop, is the modem screaming at me. I turned it's sound completely off in the Control panel under Modem. Is there something else that controls the racket ?
Or should I put the side on the case https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
