I'll find one tomorrow somewhere. Do like Mosaic suggested and ask Best Buy to borrow one of theirs for 5 minutes. Probably get away with it.
Can't hurt to ask. Happen to have my own CD in my purse.

Those *&^&%$ idiots gave you an OEM version of a startup disk. WRONG!!! You need a Win 98 startup disk THAT WAS MADE WITHIN WINDOWS 98SE IN ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS!!! (I'm not mad at you, QOH,...just those bozo-heads...)
Not sure I'd trust those "techs" at Best Buy either. They might try the fast way out too. (I.E. just make a quick copy of an OEM floppy they have lying around). Best to find that friend with WIN 98 (BTW, you shouldn't need the CD--but it wouldn't hurt to have it handy).
QoH
This boot disk should work well:

Yeah, murph--that'll work. Problem is that all the files QOH has downloaded on her "old" system (the one she's communicating with now) turned out corrupted.
Yikes! If she can find that trusted friend to download that, then make a floppy, that be OK. But while she's there, might as well make the standard Startup floppy.
Any Win 98 not just SE ? Surely somebody has it I know. I was just so sure each trip today I would have it this time. BUT NOOOOOOOOO.

7 or 8 you mean!
Texas Angel really has been meaning to do the 98SE Upgrade. Maybe I'll sneak over there in the morning and do that. Then we'd have it for sure. (Practice on hers. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ )
hmmmm ...think I might practice that format c: /s command on her Compaq. yeah...

They may be hidden from view under Windows. Go to My Computer>View>Folder Options>View>check Show all files and uncheck Hide File extensions...
Then take another looksee at your Startup disk.
You'll notice those files may look faded--that's simply to indicate that they are normally "hidden" files, but you've elected to have them show.
QOH: This does not apply to what you saw in DOS--that showed everything on that disk.

Hi,
seems I got here too late?
maybe you guys can consider these lines as comments only?
http://www.wdc.com/service/ftp/drives.html#dlgtools
where version 2.60 of dlgmaker http://www.wdc.com/service/ftp/dlgtools/dlgmaker.exe
would have made a tool to fdisk/format/hard-disk-copy in a speedy way.
in the steps I read in here it was suggested to allow primary dos partition to use all 20 gig, (must have been a timewarp/refresh fluke, since I think the post was meant to advise to use the earlier reported 2 gig as pri dos and later add other partitions, but it read as if it was suggested to use all of the 20 gig as PRI DOS.
what I wanted to point out is that if ALL of the disk is used as PRI dos, one needs tools like PQM to repartition without data loss.
since this is a fresh/clean setup, better get the partitions right at the onset.
btw, the WD tool can do that too.
and yes, avoid EZBIOS(since you don't need it anyway), but the other tools worked like a charm when I last used them on a 30 gig.
as for downloaded boot floppies
when the booter does not come in an self extracting "image" format, but came as a SFX only, it can be useful to sfx to floppy from the Downloaded file, and then run SYS A: from dosbox to ensure it becomes bootable.
last, the fdisk tool will only report file format used -aka FAT32- AFTER formatting the disk
fdisk /status shows partition info
fdisk
y
4
shows additional info, where you see if a drive is set active or not...
just my toppence,
I won't have much time to hang around for a few more days, but I reckon there is plenty good people around anyway.
I bet this will work like a charm after all..
And it's gotta be a good learning experience.

Morning all, whew, got through last night just barely. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Train, you are right about getting to long. When I logged on this morning there were 59 posts in a matter of 4 hours. Been waiting until we hit the 4th part, but yesterday left work on 3 and it hit 5 by the time I got home. Talkative bunch. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ You'd think there has to be some a sleep requirement somewhere.
QoH, you are doing good on this and you can't wait - we know. But maybe take it a little slower for the sake of all of us? https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Bistro, Hobby is on the south side if you are wondering. Go south on old 35, Telephone Road if I recall correctly, be on the left.
And thanks to the rest of you who weighed in on this subject of the shattered disk. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Mosaic is a special case and will have to be handled appropriately due to somewhat questionable remarks concerning Texas and due to being elevated to goddess status. Let's start thusly: Wanna come visit us? HeHe https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Score: computer 1, us 0. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
I gotta go. You all are the greatest. Later and be well. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Good morning. Yes, still here. Thanks, jtdoom, for th input. We were trying to keep this a simple as possible. Agree that it would be more efficient to put two to three partitions on that drive (maybe move the swap to it's own partition), for this case it would be better to just leave the whole thing as one (for now). Will break it up later if QoH so desires. I think that's a bit down the road though. Right now, we're just trying to get out of the garage... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ (Hell,...we're just trying to get the car door open...).
Will check in from time to time and see how you're doin'.
Puh-leeze make sure you make that disk on a Win 98SE machine. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Those other startup disks really should have worked, or at least get you in the door, but I suspect those "missing" files may have been the reason it wouldn't partition FAT 32.
When you fdisk, after making that partition, no matter what it says initially, go ahead and power down, then reboot into fdisk and choose the option to view the partition. Post back what it says. (had better say FAT32 or I'm gonna be wery, wery, pissed off... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/)
QOH: This is very, very important. Trying to come up with a possible alternative to that startup floppy. Your Win 98SE CD: Is it the Upgrade version or a retail Full version? (and do you have the serial number?).
IF it's a retail Full version (Upgrade version will not work this way), then here's what you can do:
Delete whatever partition you made in fdisk. Power down, power up and re-enter fdisk. Select "view partition" and make sure it is no longer there--(if it's still reporting a partition there, try to delete it again, power down etc.). If no longer there, exit out. Reboot with the floppy still in.
When asked if you want CD-ROM support--say YES.
After it stops loading, you'll be at the A: prompt. After that prompt, type in: D
You should now be at the D prompt (your CD-ROM).
Type: setup
The CD should start. It will check your C: drive, then ask if you want to use all of it for one partition---say YES. Let it do it's thing. It should prep that hard drive for installation--when it asks you to reboot, do so. Just follow the directions slowly and explicitly. When Windows starts to actually install, remove the floppy from the drive. (There are a few reboots on Win installation; you don't want the system to reboot to the floppy for this).

Thanks! Didn't catch that..."Typo" is my nickname... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Morning.
Not a full version. Upgrade.Yes I do have the product key code.
We installed it on Texas Angel's Computer this morning.
Just booted up with the disk I made from her computer using my CD and it did boot just fine. Did the fdisk and rebooted (after esc) and was fixing to do the format. I looked one more time to see the disply in fdisk and it's still says SYSTEM UNKNOWN.
The menu is just a little different than the one I did last night. But basic stuff looks the same other than that.
I have not gone any further. Not tryed to type the format c: /s yet.
After seeing the SYSTEM Unknown.
I also made a bootdisk at bootdisk.com while there. Haven't tried that one yet.
[This message has been edited by Queen_of_Hearts (edited 02-07-2001).]
Deleted again to try once more.
Under #4 it says;
Display Partition Information
Current fixed disk drive: 1
No partitions defined
Press Esc to continue
[This message has been edited by Queen_of_Hearts (edited 02-07-2001).]
OK...was that the partition you made last nigh that you just deleted? Or was it one you just made that gave you "System Unknown"?
If the former, go back in and try to create a partition again--follwing the directions (enable l. d. support, etc.). Exit, power down, reboot, and view the partition. Post back what it says.
This is in the help file
Multi config Start Menu

Windows 98 Start up Problems
Using the tools available on Start Up disk.
Yes...that's wonderful... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Did you create a new partition (and what's the info on it)? https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
We're trying the disk you have first---then try going straight to that upgrade CD and see if by some trick of the book we can get it to prep your hd; lastly we'll try using the ultimate boot disk you have to do so (hesitant to use that; don't have it in front of me so won't be able to guide you).
[This message has been edited by bistro (edited 02-07-2001).]
I started out by deleting the one last night then re did it. Then looked again and that is what it said. I just deleted again and started over and it says the same thing System Unknown. I can't look at the end without hitting esc when it gets finished so I have to reboot and type fdisk again to get to the menu.
I am back at no partitions again. Looking at the help file.

OK....I assume you now have a partition that has 19+ gigabytes showing, but still has System Unknown? Great https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ That's OK for now. Let's see if it will format and then show up as FAT 32. Go back into FDISK, NO Cd-Rom support, and at the A: prompt type:
format<space>c:<space>/s
Post back. If it "takes" you should see a warning that all data will be wiped out ---THAT'S GOOD---say Yes! and the formatting will start.
Hey, you say that's the Upgrade version. Do you have a Win 95 version CD? 98 will ask to "see" it...
Yes I have the 95 CD.
BRB
It's formatting!!!!
5% complete. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
I am defying bistro https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
It says on the sheet to go watch tv, it'll take a while. YEAH RIGHT!
TRA-LA-LA-LA-LA!!!!!! https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ GREAT! We be cookin"!
Now, after it's all done, answer the questions it asks, and reboot, NO CD-ROM support, go into FDISK and select 'view the partition' then post back for everyone's peace of mind that the System is now....(drum roll please...) FAT 32!!!!!!
Then exit out, reboot, but this time say YES to CD-ROM support (have your Win 98 CD in).
Correction: shut down completely after formatting--much better. The n do the stuff above.
No can do....I was disconnected and couldn't get back. It's installing the Windows 98 as I type.
I followed the sheet. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ It's detecting hardware.
still want me to ype fdisk???
I have a desktop and icons!
https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Hell, no... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Can do that later....You be workin' ahead of us, dear? https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
After installation, refer to the Prophet II sheet. Your vid display is gonna look weird, don't worry aboutit. Just have that CD I sent, ready to put in. Go to Device Manager>Display Adapter. Should say PCI VGA driver. Properties>Change driver> have disk, etc. etc.--point it to that Nvidia file on the CD, should recognize the *.inf file there. Reboot. Load DirectX. Reboot. Adjust Display Properties to Adapter 60mhz, etc. Adjust the horiz/vert on you monitor. Then load up your sound card. Blah, blah, blah--just follow the sheet and that e-mail I sent as to what order.
(May have to make adjustments to the sound card if that's a SB Live!). I'll try to check in, but have to do a couple of other things here right now.

Now don't get in too much of a hurry--go slow when loading up all those drivers, etc. You ain't out of the woods yet. (But we're seeing the light at the end) https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
You need to follow the Video sheet, but you also may need to load the ATA driver for that hard drive. Look at Device Manager under SCSI controllers and post back what you see.
In the device Manager there are three yellow !
! PCI Input Controller
! PCI Mass Storage Controller
! PCI Mulitmedia Audio Device
Don't know what I'm looking for but I found the Hard disk controller...NO yellow !
