OHMIGAWD, YOU DIDN'T ORDER THAT ONE, DID YOU??!!???
(....psych!...)
Ok, thanks. Will include those settings for you.
BISTRO! https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
When the page opened that's all I could see!
You KNEW ! https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
That's ok....I owe ya one now. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
UPS just delivered my Cyclone and a little tube of thermal paste.
https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ When we get that new system up and going, and do a little tweak here and there; including speeding up your modem, those pages are gonna come up real quick---wait and see... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
The thermal paste--is it silicone or what?
A good idea is to knead the tube gently to mix up the contents--sometimes there's a chemical separation if it has been sitting around long.

In fact, let's do that right now...so you can post back a little faster. What is the make/model and speed (28, 33K, 56K, etc.) of the modem on your present system?
(Did I include a program called ISpeed on that CD?)
[This message has been edited by bistro (edited 02-01-2001).]
Not sure when I can get back to this. Do yourself a favor:
1. Download ISpeed. Install the program, but don't run it yet.
2. Go to Device Manager>Ports.
Select each of your COM ports in turn and hit Properties, select the tab "Port Settings", and make sure the "Bits per second" is set to at least 57,600 or 115,200.
3. Run Ispeed. Hit the button on the right for "Optimal". Let it select the settings.
Now, see that little "notch" setting? (RWIN).
If your modem is 28K, slide it over to 2144.
If it's 33K, slide to 3216. if 56K, set it to 4824. Set the "TTL" to 32. Leave all the rest alone for now. Hit the Save button (on the right). Answer "No" to the 'History" question. Exit out and reboot the computer.
4. Connect up again and see if there is a speed increase when you come up to the forum.
If for some reason you can't connect, go into Safe Mode and uninstall ISpeed. Reboot.
I had to do a little ammending to your instructions. I already have iSpeed installed but all I ever did was hit the Optimal button and forget about it.
I did all the steps. Did the Device Manager first. None of those were set for the ones you told me to. So I redid those.
Then fired up the iSpeed and set those settings. But didn't hit the optimal first since I already had originally. You think I should have anyway?
It seems a little faster filling in.
Thermal paste is silicone
It's not on the CD but I put it on a floppy disk, for the new one. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

When I go to MY COMPUTER stuff, there is a little "pie" that shows up when I highlight C, showing what's used up and what I have left. Wonder if the "pie" will take up the whole screen with this 20Gig hard drive ? https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Size stays the same, but the unused portion will be larger by bunches.
Good afternoon/evening . https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

QOH: Is that a 56K modem? IF SO(and only if so), go to ISpeed and change the MTU (Max Transmission Unit) there on the left to "Custom" and put the number 2144 in the box. Save the settings and reboot. Again, if the modem should fail, go to Safe Mode and reset everything with the Optimal button, reboot, and post back. See if that change makes a difference.
Yep. I sure do. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Just praying all my pieces arrive on time...no delays. Some are coming from Califonia so they will take a couple extra days.
It is a 56K modem. Rockwell V90
On my way now.
I'm back ! Yes they load faster now ! https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Thanks!
Thought so. You be welcome. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
You be knowin' https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
I found the floppy for the CDROM in this computer which is the same brand (Mitsumi) only this one is 24X and the new on e is 48X.
Would they be the same drivers?...just in case?
The old ones might work in a pinch, but don't count on it. Won't need them just to get the CD working to set up Windows if you use the Win Startup disk. Can install later, if needed. I'm betting Windows 98 will recognize the make/model. May just need to update it with the new drivers later.
That's what I was worried about. Can't install Windows without the CD.
I made the fresh Windows bootdisk already. And I have the Ultimate one for future, too.
I was trying to get organized today. I have those drivers for the printer, too. But I'll leave it unplugged 'till I get going. Then install it.
Hoping the CPU gets here tomorrow. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Speaking of drivers--does everybody concerned have them ready for install? Win 98 is fairly good at recognizing hardware, but sometimes has problems, especially with printers. (Have I said this before? Sounds familiar) https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Recommend NOT having a scanner, printer, external devices, etc. hooked up when installing--can be added later. makes Setup go a little more smoothly. Good to have all drivers stowed away somewhere--also, you may see some "conflicts" in Device Manager after installation; but a lot of these are solved by just installing the latest drivers from the floppy/CD for that device.
Just don't panic if you see them. We can work through them one at a time.
EDIT: https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Now lookee there...see? Getting on the same wavelength...

What about the mouse? He has a driver too. Should I leave him off too until I get going?
I'll need it in Windows, but I'm sure I'll be rebooting enough times before I get that far.
Yes bistro. You are in my mind! https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
If Mr. mouse is a PS/2 or serial, Windows should pick it up. What kind is it? If an MS Intellimouse--Win 98 will provide everything; no need to put the floppy on. All other types (unless it's a fancy doo-dad like a Super-Cooled, Radium Powered Optical Telescopic AntiGravitational Magna-Mouse) should work with the "generic" mouse drivers in Win 98. Any fancy programs that came with a mouse should be added later after the basic install is done and any "glitches" ironed out, if any.
Micro Innovations It's a serial mouse. He and the keyboard came from "little sweety" the old 386. I'll use those 'till I get the fancy mouse...later.
The mouse on this one is a Compaq and it had no drivers. I just plugged it in and it worked after rebooting. It's pretty new. But I don't know if it'll work with anything but Compaq without some sort of adapter...?
Windows should have all my drivers.
No externals until after I run all my tests and stuff like that And am happy with it.

Have you heard of a router/switch?? heard that they were faster than routers. Have not looked for any yet.

Folks, this has been a good read catching up with what's going on. And don't get the big head QoH. We all know who masterminded this expedition. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ And without our mentors we'ed still be wondering how to ...... ???? https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Been up since 1am this morning working on an opportunity!! Have had 5 of these opportunities right in a row. Like computers better.
Train, the prices are almost as good as they will get; probably spots here and there. Bottom out maybe in three months looks like. Has her highness left anything to buy? https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Only the modem!
Well, well, well ! So did you bring your notorized Dr.'s excuse greengoose?
[This message has been edited by Queen_of_Hearts (edited 02-01-2001).]
As I am using cable, read netcard, and will have 2 computers. I have been contemplating using a router to connect the two together and access the cable modem. Lead to understand it is easier than ICS in windows, has a firewall in it, and makes it harder to hack.

Dang right QoH. Spent 2 hrs this afternoon being proded and poked. Get results next week but let me assure you I intend to outlast you just for no other reason than to see you try and take your "machiuns" with you. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Got to get some shuteye. Nite all.

Train: Couldn't tell you about that router...know a little, but don't want to steer you wrong. Maybe someone over at the networking forum would know better.
QOH: Check your e-mail.
Greengoose1: Glad to see you're back. Take good care now.
And with that...must say Adieu; pretty pooped out myself...Nite!

Got it bistro. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Thanks. I will be studying.
Morning All, At the rate you all are posting, will have to change over tonight. Still having trouble getting through during the day. Sometimes yes -sometimes no. But once I post I can't read succeeding posts. Also hit or miss. And my comp ops hasn't the foggiest. Have reccommended VirDr to them. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Later. Be well

QOH: Good. Shouldn't have to mention this, but don't want to leave anything to chance.
You won't have use of the mouse--need to use the arrow keys.
Yes, it's hard to believe it was ever done that way...before the mouse was invented. When I set the clock that time in the BIOS I had to do that. Went exploring in there recently. Just to "look". There were a couple places the mouse did work. Then it went back to "enter and arrows", on other screens https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
I touched the Video Card. Ommmvveee! Here's an eyeroller for ya. I don't have one on this computer (we established that it's built in). I see it has a port. What's that for? The monitor?
[This message has been edited by Queen_of_Hearts (edited 02-02-2001).]
Port? You talkin' bout that thingy on the back?--monitor connector. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Oh, Hey...another redundant tip...write down your ISP access numbers, DUN settings, export your Address Book and favorites. I know you're going to have your current system up, but it's still a good idea to do this. Backup, backup, backup.
[This message has been edited by bistro (edited 02-02-2001).]
I put the Dial up connection on a floppy. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Ans my favorites. Still need to do the address book. I practiced "exporting" and I think they ended up in My Documents. So I'll open it and see if it's really them and put those on a floppy too.
[This message has been edited by Queen_of_Hearts (edited 02-02-2001).]
probably as a txt file. But not to worry...IE will recognize the file when importing and put everything nice and neat back into your Address Book.
Almost done with that BIOS tip sheet. Will e-mail--little too big to post here. Designed it to walk you through the steps.
[This message has been edited by bistro (edited 02-02-2001).]
I need three things now to be delivered. The CPU, the RAM and the Golden Orb.
Unless all three things arrive today I'll have to wait until next week. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Keeping my fingers crossed. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
I'll be looking for the BIOS tweak, bistro.
