Morning all,
I had trouble too greengoose. If it wasn't one thing it was another. I'm here. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
sdtechraised a good point there--sparked my memory--the two main problems I've sen with those Via chipsets is as he mentioned, the USB situation and problems with the 4in1 drivers--both related. Seen enough of those to, in my opinion, warrant avoiding those mobos altogether. Seen comparitively little to none concerning Intel chipsets.
I feel pretty good after reading about y'alls problems. Mine don't seem so bad. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
sdtech, I thought you listed a list of components in OpDe somewhere.
Will the real Bistro stand up. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Later
Gotta go to the city today, so I have a map printed out with directions to the MicroCenter !
After all, it is on my way. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
EDIT:
bistro,
They are talking about video cards here.
I didn't realize there were going to be so many different models to choose from. Do some only go with AMD and some only with Intel ?
Or is it just more features, newer models ?
[This message has been edited by Queen_of_Hearts (edited 12-18-2000).]
Train,
I just talked to Compaq tech support and they said, "If a larger Power Supply will fit, go ahead and use it." So, it looks like a physical size question now!
No, as long as your mobo has an AGP slot--doesn't really matter what chipset it has. There has been reports of some minor glitches between some cards and chipsets, but those are the exception, not the rule.
What you are looking for is an AGP-slot, 32mb vid card with 3D capability. Quite a few to choose from and you're going to see a lot of debate (especially amongst gamers) as to which one is "the best" or the fastest--quoting a lot of benchmarking results. Just bear in mind that, when it comes to quoted 'frames per second' capabilities, more fps is great, but remember that your eye can't catch much difference beyond 60 fps. While there are deals to be had, try to
choose a card around the $130-$150 range with the above basic characteristics. I would veer away from the 3Dfx Voodoo cards for now--they were just taken over by Nvidia and it remains to been seen what they are going to do with the Voodoo series. Diamond, Matrox, ATI are all good brands. Perhaps a Diamond Viper 770 Ultra would be a good card for your purposes--takes either the Diamond drivers or the latest Nvidia drivers. A GeForce 2-based card would be another good choice.
More confused now?? https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
sdtech: https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ That sounds like a non-committal answer to me. They probably already know that a larger power supply won't fit. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Hmmmm..maybe a little chiseling here, a little drilling there...a touch of an acetylene torch....
WHOA! https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ I think I have seen it all now! That place was amazing. Got prices on things and need to compare to what I got so far. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
No not more confused. Just so many Video cards to choose from. I'll keep those three things in mind. Thanks, bistro. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
You're welcome. (Watch that pocketbook! Easy to lose it in there! https://discussions.virtualdr.com/)
sdtech
Thank you for the powersupply info and the add to what I knew about via chipsets.
I have had my share and then some with their chipsets.
bistro Hmmmm..maybe a little chiseling here, a little drilling there...a touch of an acetylene torch....
Nothing new there https://discussions.virtualdr.com/, except you left the nibbler off the list https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
I had trouble getting in the site yesterday .
Not freezing, no snow, so therefore a pleasant day!
Good afternoon everyone.

Nibbler??? Naaaah, I don't go for the gentle touch...a little C4, det cord, etc. gets the job done faster....
Neighbors complain less.
But, those you listed do work.

Hi all, I see where you all posted this afternoon and the post count was going up but the posts wouldn't display. I noticed the same problem on some other threads and Vir Dr was down early this morning. Any idea what's happening?
Probably need to archive some more.

Was going slow this morning for a while with some hangups this a'noon--occurred all over the network for these forums. Minor glitch thatappears to have been corrected.
Welcome Ladies and Gentlemen to "Operation Delta"--an ongoing project to build a computer. At this point in your reading, you may be wondering "Where in the heck is everybody??". Do not despair, for our intrepid builders are in what's called "The Contemplation Phase" of building a computer. In other words...They're thinking, they're thinking!. keep following this project, for as soon as they procure all the parts and are ready to go, they verily shall be posting every 5 seconds.... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Boy oh boy, I learned neat "stuff" today. Followed one of Bistro's links and wandered around Hardware Central and other places. Theory of overclocking was neat but I don't think we need it right now QoH. "The Others" plumb failed to tell us how vast the realm of computers is.
I went through the list of stores etc in the Metro Plex. There are two "Micro's", the closest one - 100 miles. Gonna have to do some exploring after Xmas but I can't help feeling what Bistro, Train, sdtech, Snarfll, others including "The Sleeper" have given us we can buy long distance with confidence. When you go into a store, start asking questions, and a glazed look begins in the eyes ....... how can they sell you what you know you want?
Went to a popular store yesterday--won't say what it was, but it's initials are BB. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Asked the guy in the computer section "Hey, bud, where's your graphics cards?" He just stared for a moment with this weird look on his face and tried to send me to the CD section. I found the graphics card section on my own--he came wandering through there a few minutes later. I just pointing to the boxes and he just sheepishly said "Oh". https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
"Hired help"; Yikes!
What are you and Train wanting to modify? Surely one doesn't need C-4 to install a power supply - at least I hope not.
Contemplating - you call this contemplation? I can't wait to have the finished product. I haven't been so challenged in a long time as I have with this project. This is almost better than - huh - can't remember. Oh well. You guys have given us a tremendous amount of material and I fear this is but the surface for some reason. Payback is when you realize we ain't disappearing.
greengoose1
A computer!!! With a Bang.
On the Geforce 2 MXI found the following:
It uses 4W of power, far less than any other GeForce and should work with a lot more motherboards and power supplies.
It's low profile (as well as low power consumption) should benefit case cooling
It doesnt need a fan (fans have been going bad on other geforces)
Not bad requirement, power wise.

For verily the World of Computers is surely vast; who can fathom it? Fear not that thou hast only scratcheth the surface as a chick that seeketh seed in the dirt; for if thou hunt and peck with patience, thou shalt find the good seed and shall enter the Cyberworld with a powerful system and with great rejoicing.

Ok .....M.G. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
How come Micro Center said they have been out of the Pentium III's for 5 months, cause they are back ordered from INTEL, but all the sites I have looked at have them in stock. At least the "Yes" is there ?
They din't sell Western Digital, either. They sell Maxtor.
Prices too high to buy, but was an awesome field trip. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Because "Yes" in "vendorspeak" means "You better call first because our stock manager is still on vacation and nobody else here knows how to put the "no" on our page". Nothing is more frustrating than to order on the Net, only to get a nasty email saying "We'll get to it as soon as our stock comes in". Always call their toll-free number and check first. If they don't provide that service, find a vendor that does.
P.S--the Maxtor's aren't bad for a mid-priced HD, but I've found that the newest WD's are much quieter. There are better, but pricier hd's out there. A noisy hd can be irritating after a while.
[This message has been edited by bistro (edited 12-18-2000).]
May be a leader to get you in and sell P4's.
Go to make money somehow.
My GUESS. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
------------------
SMILE
That would make me mad ! I guess I'd better make that the first thing I locate.... just in case.
All the sites I've looked at had a 1-800 # so I'll do some calling. If it's really that scarce right now, I might need to snatch one up if I do find it. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
I remember you saying the Maxtors were noisy, bistro....way back.
You may be right Train. Tell you they don't have um, then you settle https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ for the IV.
[This message has been edited by Queen_of_Hearts (edited 12-18-2000).]
PIII's are starting to get snatched up because of the falling prices. There are plenty of them still out there--just gotta look. If the sales guy or gal tries to steer you away from the PIII to get the "All New and Improved!" P-IV, then watch it. You have to get a mobo that accomodates the P-IV and they are a little pricey at the present time. (This too shall pass...give them 6 months or so). But the P-IV CPU prices won't be coming down anytime soon. Computer makers, of course, are getting "First Dibbies".
Well, folks, time to say goodnight. Day off tomorrow--gotta get the rest of shopping done. Wife was unable to and still can't--resting well, but still very tired and recuping. Bunch of sleet, snow and freezing rain expected tomorrow--oh joy.
G'nite all.
bistro, I found this maybe it will help down the road. Copy and paste.
Besides Adobe Acrobat, you can also open and edit PDF files in CorelDraw versions 8 through 10, Photoshop 6, and Illustrator 8 or 9. I beleive there may be some other programs for editing PDF listed on the desktop publishing site. http://desktoppub.about.com

I read that, and bet they are widely seperated. Protection you know.
Vid cards Ahhhhhhhh choices gallor.
Think I will try to tearrring into a certain computer in the next couple evenings https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ I did like the output, video type that is..

Oh JOY ! My Christmas company will be here Wednesday instead of Thursday, https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ so I am in a frenzy now. Wish Mosaic was here to help me clean !
You may not see hide nor hair of me for a while. (....yeah right https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ )

....me tooooo https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Morning all, sdtech, my list is the same except I'm still toying with how much memory - I was thinking of 30GB, but 20GB logically sounds better. I can always add 20 more. I didn't have enough time to find your list yesterday I was looking for. It seems like you posted one. And the word impatient is taboo here - don't want to talk about it.
It seems we are all busy with the holidays and such, but the number of posts haven't gone down that much. (Should we recount?) https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ I can't believe I said that.
Let's see Bistro's better half on the mend and except for Mosaic's meltdown over the printer, (she recovers quickly it seems)we will have a good holiday. A very merry Christmas to all of you.
https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Morning
I'm already cleaning my buns off ! https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Hmmmm. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Have you found any PIIIs yet QoH in your travels?
Maybe if you make threatening gestures with the shotgun, maybe "Chucky" will behave himself... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
http://cwm.ragesofsanity.com/s/cwm/circle.gif Glad it worked out though...
If you read back, you can easily see where "Chucky" maybe got scared from threats. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
No, my house was not that dirty that it took me all day. I am just thorough. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ I have been running around behind the kids with the vacuum and Windex, trying to keep it clean.
I have called Allstar and the man I talked to said he does have the Pentium III's in stock ! I told him I was not quite ready but would be shortly after Christmas. He said it would probably be a great idea to wait until after Christmas anyway before ordering because prices would definitely be coming down. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
QoH, that sounds good.
Train, Was looking at one of your posts on memory. Put in one 20GB first, then later the other? Or both at once. Or should it be twin 30's. Still thinking on this point.
Queen_of_Hearts
Good planing is hard to beat! And it sounds like you have one. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Fire hoses at full flow, do a excellent job of cleaning, believe you me. Talk about a sweep the decks type thing. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
greengoose1
Go with 20MB for now and if you wind up with that much on it, get a second one {you will have a better feel for it} or a cd-rw and archieve on cd. More or less what I am doing.
