bistro,
I moved. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
I had trouble finding the battery in the first place. $16.00 for something the size of a quarter !
It didn't have a tiny little piece of metal soldered on it like the old one did.
I had to really pry the old one out.Stuck in there pretty good. When I bought it it was in a ziplock bag with several others. Not NEW obviously. I had looked everywhere for it, even Radio Shack. This place fixes and repairs. I do have my receipt. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
I'll try this and see what happens.

Going to pull a Q-O-H trick! Go window shopping. I feel some heat in my pocket???

Campbell, Lewis, Lost-in-the Woods, Schofield Barracks (hardship tour https://discussions.virtualdr.com/), Germany, Bosnia with IFOR.
Q_O_H: Did you have to break anything to get that old one out? Check something for me: Go into the BIOS and make sure the date and clock are current. Then save the settings and exit. Power down immediately after it saves and starts to reboot. Wait about 10 secs, then power up again. Go into the BIOS again and see if the date/clock remained the same. I got a sneaky suspicion..... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
-
No I didn't have to break anything, It had a clip on top and the little metal thing was pointing down (like a tab). The new one didn't have that.
I tried to reset the clock. It was on 12:01 Date 01/03/1980. It let me fix the clock but would not take the date. Kept going back to 1980.
I also reset the defaluts too and did everything else. Then when it came back up there was that message again.
Maybe the battery needs the little tab ?

Qoh:
You may have to call Compaq to get a new battery!
-
I'm thinking that too sdtech.
I looked and called everywhere around to get it. Probably be twice as much from Compaq. $16.00 for the one I did find.
Or I could live with it. Just press F1. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Mosaic,
HP said you have a dirty mind ! ...........well, he said you were "cleaning your brains out". https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Me too, thanks. If not I'll live with. Won't be long.....

QOH: Think sdtech is right--better call Compost...er...Compaq and try to get a new one.
The wife is still in the hospital, but there is a remote chance she can be released tomorrow sometime.

Well pulled the 64MB PC100 that was in the computer and replaced it with the 128.
Virtual is set to Let mocrosoft set.
Rerun some of the graphics that I had made.
The ones that had taken 3 minutes now take about 5 seconds. And no hard disk activity.
We oggled the difference and conclude the old compaq is now moving like it should have.
Would you believe the Power supply is only 85 watts. And this thing runs. Hard to comprehend.
I know new toy must play https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Train: don't take this wrong, but: cheap parts>>>"cheap" wattage. I've seen too many times folks having stability problems with weak Compaq power supplies; especially when trying to upgrade. Doesn't surprise me about the RAM either. It would be interesting to put that old RAM in a tester and really check it out---probably slower than a frozen turtle on Valium; HAS to be cheap, slow RAM; if you are getting results as you say.

Morning All, VirDr was down this morning at 5:00am CST. Just came up. Later

bistro,
I was looking at this page and see a HUGE difference in the Celeron and Pentium III, according to this. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
I noticed the 128KB on the Celeron and 256KB on the PentiumIII. Is that referring to the fan ? Didn't we determine we were getting the Global Win heatsink/fan, and ordering the CPU without ?
[This message has been edited by Queen_of_Hearts (edited 12-15-2000).]
-
*Ahem* that's not referring to the fan--refers to the on-chip cache. The PIII has a larger cache--without going into tech-talk, it enhances the performance--but for the system we're talking about, you probably won't notice too much difference. Still, I'd recommend the PIII. Celeron I'd recommend to one who wants to overclock.
-
I like *Ahem* better than https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
But did you see the difference in the price ?
Celeron is only half as much. Is the Pentium that much better ?
Earlier, you said you got the Celeron specifically to overclock it, then, when we compared prices, the Celeron was higher, and I asked about it then. (the Plymouth)
At this site it's not. That was really what I was amazed about.

As said before--you gotta shop. You'll see price differences like that--don't ask me why it's like that...solar flares, alien influence from space...stock market...undecided vendors in Florida...whatever.
-
Know of the cheap route.
Took out HYUNDAI and put in better as a direct replacement.
As I stated somewhere in reality this has been a good beginner's machine. What you learn to do to overcome problems, as buying the cd, now will save me in a way https://discussions.virtualdr.com/. The mother board is mounted on a removable board and to get it out I had to remove the ISA net card and modem {CIS technology}. And if my hands were the size of a 6 year olds, it would have been real easy. Overall, we like the difference. Bet it gets upgraded before next December. PS, mb, cpu maybe a ata66 hard drive.
Did the Mrs. get to come home?

Yup, she was discharged today--resting...still pretty tired--not totally out of the woods yet. That's why I've been able to get in and out here more often last week--staying at home watching her--the folks at work have been real understanding.

That is a good crew you are working with then.

I finally figured out how to find out how may amps this thing is drawing.
Will make my 2 foot 3 prong extention cord again and us my electricians amp probe while using it. Totally insulated and by code book.
85 watt power supply and someone stated generally need 150 for mb. OK, will get answer this week end.

Well I finally got here. Whew! Wife home - great. Need somebody to keep you straight. Maybe he'll be able to foocccuuuusssss better. Train, I did not know my computer was made by Compost, I really didn't now. How's your new RAM working out? 85W PS?
-
WHO said you needed 150W for a motherboard?? https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Usually needs 30 to 40 watts--give or take.

Evening https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Oh good bistro, glad she's home !
Bet she won't be up to Christmas shopping. You get to do that ?
I've put it off as long as I dare...

Hey gnomes of knowledge, I just came from PC Cooling and my question is this Roughly how much for a S500 and 350W PS together?

New ram fantastic - and that is what is on the powersupply 85 watts.
Reread A good rule of thumb from what you posted for me on wattage demands.
Explains why this thing is under/clocked.
board will take [pins] 100 FSB set for 95 and 550 Mhz [set for 380] It is a AMD K6-2.
Will figure this out.

Fount this in my searches today greengoose. Was looking in my neck of the woods too.
Also, on one of ghouldini's links in the HP thread was a pretty good one on how to "roll your own" https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
-
Ok now, change up. Would a bigger PS in The Compost help its reliability and stability?
-
Don't think so, it has been running real good. What with those things I read before starting to post and afterward, I have figured most things that needed to be done. All were simple, the ram change is the only money spent on it. And that may have been part of the big problem in the first place.
I say that after remembering a tech's statement of RAM and the enunciation enfases.

Checked out that link, QoH. Found a place I'd highly recommendHere. The one here is like a toyland for computers; especially for parts and pieces.

S500 this includes the power supply.

Lemme go look at a couple of these links and I'll be back. (If we ever got on a conference call....... I can hear it now. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ )
-
Ohhhh ...... there's one in my area !
Did you find a place to look up prices on that link ? I found their built computers but not a section on the parts and componants, yet. Might have to WINDOW SHOP> https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
-
https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
ALERT!ALERT! ALERT! Before you go and try to buy upgrades for a "Compost" system--think twice. Can you spell "propietary"?
I'm checking into it, but last time I read, they're STILL putting propietary power supplies in those things. A standard ATX power supply will not fit. A few other things in there are strictly Compost also.
So, for any upgrades, repairs, etc. guess who you HAVE to go to and whose parts you HAVE to get? HMMMM....
Now...if anyone out there has some documentation to refute that, please post a link to such documentation here.
