There you are bistro ! https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
I thought you were stuck in the snow somewhere between home and work and had misplaced your keys again ! https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
......are your mittens strung together so you don't loose those ? https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
We were worried https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
-
No snow here yet, but I did tie my shoes together so I wouldn't lose them. It was a real bear getting out the door this morning...
Well, gotta pop back out now--taking daughter to the doctor--routine visit. Back later...

Mosaic,
I'd be thrilled with the plastic screwdriver !
Hotmail just popped back on !
Thank you https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
I don't know what's left or next.....are we ready ? https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
bistro,
I have the image in my mind of your departure for work this morning. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Train, When you check in, please give me your opinion on 20GB that you put on your list and 30GB I am considering. Be Back
My think is I will partition to keep Under 8GB {4K clusters}. Probably 4 on Master. Slave 20GB Will have min of 3 partitions and if I can swing it, be mounted in a swap tray. In other words I will be able to remove it and not go into the machine. And the way I try to do things, I more than likely put a tray in this one.
Reasons: Backup maybe play with other OS'S and a project of old family photos with naratives, geneology [ This is a 487 page document already{900 k}]. In other words a partition per subject or two. And partition size sublect to change yet.
hp at present has adaptic with there burners.
I follow there suggestions and so far 1 goof out of about 50. And, I believe I did and not the machine.

Good Evening !
Had to wait for my turn. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
I didn't get a chance to check on the RAM Train, but a friend who knows I'm in the process of doing this got a FAX at work from some Computer parts place they do business with, with some prices today. I Nothing on my list was on the FAX but she said she gets those all the time. I'll be checking those too.

Hey ! greengoose and bistro,
Yall must have been posting as I was typing.
-
bistro,
Are we going to have to buy cables and cords ? Those things aren't cheap either. Does the case come with those ?
-
Give her a couple days and watch the fire return. Took my sister almost a year to get over it. OH yes, 20+ years ago that was. Medicine has improved.
------------------

No, they don't, except the power cord for the ps. The mobo may come with cables. The hard drive usually has a cable with it. If the mobo came with a cable, that's the one I usually used rather than the one that came with a hard drive--rare now, but sometimes the mobo needed that particular ribbon cable in order to function properly. Haven't seen that though for a while.
After you get proficient at "tinkering"--you'll someday end up with shoeboxes full of those cables... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
-
So we need to order those when we order each thing, or wait and get all we're gonna need at one place?
Did ya see that CD2CDs link Forrest1 posted ? https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Ya just had to mention shoe boxes, didn't ya ?
....I have plenty of those. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Fasten your seat belt
That is a low end one price wize https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
I checked a month a go [go and keep it.

No--they come with them; part of the deal. No need to order separately.
Ok...for right now, just empty one shoebox and get it ready.... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
-
Oh, surely I can find an empty box around here somewhere. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Low end, Train ? Wow !
One of those would go with that $2,000.00 Video card we saw the other day.
I gotta go see what these "sticks" of RAM look like.
-
Ain't all that big now ya hear.

Boy ! It's little bitty ! Must be what those 6 little green cards are in mine.
https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Can't be if they are 8MB each ? Or did I misunderstand ? I only have 24MB so I'd only have three.
-
RAM, RAM, RAM....is that all EWE can talk about? https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
-
mutter - mutter - that was interesting on switches. ;( Learn sumpin new everyday https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
-
The little black squares are the chips ?
EWE said I needed 128. I'd have (oh dear .......math https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ ).............16.
-
Queen_of_Hearts
OH, they are bigger than those in your machine. Quite a bit bigger. Do you have a 486 by chance??
They work in pairs

It's a Compaq Prolinea 5100. I guess it's a Pentium I.
-
Yes and No. Yes, those little black squares are the chips. No, you don't need 16 sticks.
RAM comes in various configurations. You can get one stick that has 128mb on it, 2 sticks with 64 each, 4 with 32mb each.
-
So it depends on how the motherboard is sset up as to whether you need the 4 32MB or the 2 64 MB or 1 128MB sticks.
Mosaic, Good pictures on that link.
In the installation section it says remove the RAM from the static bag. Now,correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought we established this was NOT a good thing ? https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
-
You have EDO memory in yours.

Q.O.H.
The RAM usually comes in anti-static bags!
-
Since all my slots are filled up, I'd have to get rid of those little pairs of 8MB's and put in the new ones up to 192MB.
That could cost some $$ !
But I could add 16MB if I took out a pair of 8MB then I'd have 32MB and it would help a bunch.
I'm seeing.
-
QoH: Again it's a problem with semantics in "tech talk". Anti-static bag and static bag are one and the same. Actually, the second term is more accurate. The bag is NOT anti-static; it is coated with a special chemical to disperse static disharge, should any come in contact with the surface. One should touch the case or properly wear a static wrist strap before reaching into the bag to retrieve the RAM stick (or any piece of computer hardware, for that matter). I.E. When you get out of a car, wearing a wool flannel shirt, etc. and you get zapped when shutting the door--that's about 10,000 to 20,000 volts of static electricity--hurts, don't it? https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Just think what that would to to a sensitive RAM chip. One pop and there goes an investment of 60 or 70 bucks.
ADDITION: I hope you don't intend on buying PC-133 RAM and attempt to install it on your current motherboard--It's too old--won't be compatible.

To get static discharge it must be 50,000 volts to arc across from the human body. Yes you get a bang.

I went back to look sdtech and it says Static:
First....disconnect any power supplies...heck, unplug the thing.
Next, remove the cover of your system.
Then, ground yourself by touching the metal casing of your system.
Now, open up the static bag your memory came in, remove the memory, and find the memory banks on your motherboard.
I just saw your post, bistro. I understand, now.....I was freakin' out when I saw that !
-
Of course not ! https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ I was just thinking it might help to add a little bit to this one. Wouldn't help the measley 180MB of 802MB I have left.
The 128MB is for the NEW one.
EDIT:
YES it hurts ! I got it zapped twice today !
[This message has been edited by Queen_of_Hearts (edited 12-12-2000).]

Whew...glad of that, QoH---had me worrried there for a sec.
Thanks for the correction there, Train. Of course, I have never experienced anything like that...only because I'm a well-grounded person....

Believe it , IT would speed it up. I know of a 486 that is almost as fast as this thing on the web. Put a couple pair of 32's in it.
Youngest sister will not trade it either.

I will. But first, I'm putting any extra cash I find laying around here into the pocket of my jeans with the hole burned in it. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Extra cash?? sounds like very unfamiliar term to me! Hole in pocket/Yes I resemble that remark.
