Bistro, I figured $1000.00 cost. Have a third of that set aside now. If Christmas bonus big enough, I'll be all set. If not, by
March 1. I told QoH, I thought I could have my component list ready for you all to critique by the end of next week. There is one fear. Messen' up when I am assembling.
QoH: Then perhaps you can wait until after the Christmas crunch---nothing wrong with that; we all know the feeling.. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
If you don't want to have to upgrade anytime soon (as we all try to avoid when doing this kind of thing), go for a 450mhz CPU or higher. Now all you need to consider is price--here's my money, here's how much processor power I can afford. Speaking of upgrading, one thing I've seen some folks do is keep waiting and waiting; afraid that what they'll get will be obsolete in a year.
Here's the news: it just MIGHT be "obsolete". You'll never "catch up". PC hardware is growing exponentially--bigger and badder coming out every week. You just gotta make the best decision based on what you need/want, your budget, then jump in.
[This message has been edited by bistro (edited 12-07-2000).]
greengoose1: Don't worry about the assembly--if you've ever put a toy or bicycle together, this will be a piece of cake. I provided a link way back that takes you through the process step-by-step--it's a lot easier than you are probably thinking. And you've got folks here who can do it in their sleep and who are ready to help. After you're done with it, you'll probably think "Why do those companies charge so much for their computers? This was nothing!". A grand will get you a really nice one---do you intend to get a new monitor with that, or use your current one until you can afford to upgrade that? If that sum doesn't include a new monitor, then you've got more latitude choosing the vid card, processor, etc.---should do quite nicely. You might be surprised though after purchasing the parts you want---might have a fair bit of change left over.

We're being taken down for a while. Later
bistro,
I've just about decided. This little Pentium I sure has been a good one. For me and it's previous owners.
One of the articles I read made reference to different types of computer owners. Ones who just have to keep up with the Jones', ones who upgrade every two years and those who hang on until forced to upgrade. I'm probably going to be one of those that hang on 'til the bitter end (....obviously https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ ) unless this is, like you said, a lot easier than I think. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
I'll wait on the monitor so I can have as much as possible to put into the system.
Is Celeron just another model of the Pentium or is that a different kind of processor ?
Mosaic,
https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ In reference to your Violence and Threats post, I saw this this morning :
PERCUSSIVE MAINTENANCE: The fine art of whacking the hell out of an electronic device to get it to work again.
Was your link to the Western Digital site just so I could see what a hard drive looked like or a recomendation ?
Both are made by Intel. Some have described the Celeron as "the poor man's Pentium"--but that has been proven to be not quite true. The "Celly" (cute techie slang) has proven itself to be a real contender---also a favorite of overclockers because you can (for example) take a 533 Cel and overclock it so it runs at 800 (but let's not open THAT can of worms right now). For all practical purposes, the Celeron is a Pentium, minus part of the chip cache. I won't go into any more detail than that; not necessary for you. Techs like to compare speeds, caches, benchmarks and the like between CPU's (makes for a lot of lively conversations---actually fun), but most home users wouldn't be able to tell the performance difference between a Cel 533 and a Pentium 550--or could care less for such things. Most Pentium-based motherboards will accept both Pentium and Celeron (there are some weird ones out there that are CPU specific--kind of rare). You'll need to read the specifications as to the range of chips the particular mobo will run. Real easy---the ad, box or dealer site will have that info.
EDIT: Sorry, ya'll---gotta go for a while. Will check back in a few hours.

I Gotcha.
So the question is ....do I need the XLT ?
Possibly, but not necessarily the Eddie Bauer Edition > leather interior and heated seats, with memory positions https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ No....but look for a computer case that has Fine Corinthian Leather...
Ok...looked around a bit and I have a couple of recommendations for mobo/CPU--will give you avg. prices too. Both are Intel-based mobos. One takes a 370 Socket CPU, the other takes a Slot 1 type. (Now don't freak out, I'll keep this simple...). 370 socket CPU's have been around for a long time--the chip is designed to lay flat, inserted into a socket on the mobo that looks like a Saltine cracker with a big hole in the middle--edges full of small pinholes--is that graphic enough? https://discussions.virtualdr.com/. Then Intel had an idea to put their chips into a black casing, which in turn is inserted upright into a slot on a mobo that looks much like the slot your vid card is inserted into (Slot 1 type). Both are still being made. Heard a rumor that Intel was possibly considering discontinuing the Slot 1 type and making all their chips 370's. Remains to be seen. Anyway, one of these mobos is Socket 370, the other is a Slot 1 type. Both are excellent and won't be "obsolete" for quite a while. You simply match the mobo with the correct type Pentium (or Celeron). (prices given are average)
1. Motherboard: Abit BX 133-RAID; considered one of, if not the best, mobo of the year.
(Socket 370-type)
Mobo---------------------$150
Pentium III 800mhz CPU---$176
128 PC-133 RAM-----------$ 43
Avg total: $369
2. Soyo 6BA +100; top board, great tech support--outbenched the Abit in a couple of tests (Slot 1 type)
Mobo----------------------$145
(Same CPU and RAM as above)
Avg total: $364
If you substitute a Celeron for the Pentium 3's: (avg. prices)-(add $20 for a Slot 1 adapter card (called a "slotket")for the chip if you get a Slot 1 mobo
633 $72
700 $79
733 $116
766 $179
Hope this helps a little bit.
**Oh, what the hay...here's some more avg. prices on P III's:
667 $135
733 $166
750 $174
800 $176
850 $216
866 $225
933 $323
1Ghz $446

I'm back. Would a been sooner but my banker wanted to reposess me. So he builds computers, he said. I tell him what I'm doing
(In case I have to tap him for a loan) He wants to know if all of you are as good as I tell him. I said to check it out and VirDr is giving MS a run according to Google. He says nooooo. I say YESSSSSS and do you want to buy a computer. He hangs up. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Bistro, will use the same monitor as it's only a little over a year old and 17". Thanks for the descriptions and prices. But one question off the top of your head or I'll research it. How much difference in 20 and 30gb dollar wise?
Bistro,
YEA ! That helps a bunch !
Which one of the Celeron's is comparable to the Pentium III 800mhz CPU ?
For only 5 bucks difference in the motherboards I'd almost have to go
with the Abit, since it is the 370 Socket. Even if it is just a rumor.
None of this stuff is heavy so there can't be that much in shipping and handling.
Then I'd just need the hard drive, video card and the case, since I'm using my modem and sound card, CDROM and floppy drive, and this monitor(NEC), and the mouse. Probably need a new keyboard (this is a Compaq ...will it work?)
Then add the CD writer later. And the monitor.
I'm closer than I thought ! https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Is that it ? For a basic system that I can add stuff to of my choosing later, or run just like it is.

IBM 20GB ATA100 7200 RPM $140
add 20 for the 30GB
Seems to be a + or - 10 to 20 dollars among the various brands/sellers.
Do not know the brand names but this might be of interest.
128MB PC133 $80-90
Seems there was a big price drop while I was not looking. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
And that seems to be across the board for all the adverizers in the magazine.

Here it is:
Western Digital ATA-66 (the 20 gig Hard drive) $125.00
In Win A 500 ATX Mid Tower 300watt Power supply $70.00
(or Enlight ATX Midtower)
128 MB RAM $43.00
GeForce2 based or Diamond Viper ultra series Video Card $
Intel Pentium III 800mhz CPU $176.00
Motherboard Abit BX 133-RAID ( socket370-type) $150.00
The Cel 766 is the closest to the PIII 800. But I'll let you in on a little secret....ssshhhh...something for FUTURE reference;don't try it right away....
The Cel 766 can be overclocked to over 800, and that Abit board is considered one of the best "overclocker" boards around. (HOWEVER, if you overclock, the warranty's void!). Just keep that in the back of your mind for the far-flung future for now.
One other thing: If you have an ISA type modem--the Abit has only one ISA slot available, and it has to be a short ISA card--a long one won't fit into it because of some LED lights in the way--a very small design "flaw". (Do I need to describe to either of you the diff between AGP, PCI and ISA slots, or find a link for you?)
No sir,
You have already been so kind. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
DIMM slots: Where the RAM "sticks" are sitting.
Motherboard: That big green or brown square where all those gizmo cards are sitting on.
CPU:That flat thingy sitting on a white square (or in a slot) that has that "cute little fan" attached to it--usually close to the RAM.
Cards:What you've been plugging all those wires into at the back of the computer (sound, video, modem). Found sitting upright on the motherboard. Each has it's own "slot", which brings us to....
Slots https://discussions.virtualdr.com/on't put quarters into these!!!
They are for your "cards" (see above). Your number and type of slots may vary according to what motherboard you have, but generally all motherboards have 3 types:
AGP slot--the newer mobos (lazy techie slang for "motherboard") have just one of these and are for the "newer" AGP video cards. Make sure your new mobo has one. Usually brown or beige in color and is the closest slot to the CPU.
PCI slot(s)--those slots all lined up right after the AGP--white in color--you may have 3 to five of these. Sound cards, older vid cards and newer modems can go into these.
ISA slots--black in color--may have one to three of these--older "legacy" slots--not much used these days, but still around in most mobos to accomodate slightly older modems and older sound cards, etc..
*Some mobos have an ISA and a PCI slot "sharing" the same position and opening in the back; also the same circuitry on the mobo--I won't go into any more detail than that--no real need now.
Those words look straaaaannnngely familiar...I hate these deja vue experiences..... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Does the Soyo 6BA +100 have more slots ?
This modem is less than a year old. Rockwell. I still have the box....somewhere.
The Celeron is a little higher and then add 20 more to it. I thought it was the Plymouth ? https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
That's right ...Cel and PIII prices are a bit haywire right now---it's weird. Cels used to be way cheaper than the P's. Prices on PIII's are dropping in anticipation for the P 4's coming out. That's why I always suggest folks to wait a litle while to get a brand new piece of hardware...6 months down the road, the price usually drops considerably---a somewhat consistent trend in the PC market.
The Abit has 1x AGP, 5x PCI, and 1x ISA
The Soyo has 1x AGP, 5x PCI, and 2x ISA
What type of slot is your modem sitting in? (Probably it's a PCI modem if less than 1 yr old---that's good).
I'll have to look again. that means shutting down to open it up.
Fixing supper anyway. I'll look after while.
So does that mean wait six months or take the plunge and then don't look !
Just got to the house see that you all have been busy(again). Go git 'em QoH. Good stuff as always. Thanks Train for info. Maybe hitting the market at the right time, Bistro?
Just check crucial and they have dropped their prices it seems also. I checked for mine and web purchase just under 100.

Great Train, Maybe prices drop around Xmas, ya think?
QoH: No. I refer to brand spanking new stuff fresh out on the market, like..."Acme Super WizBang 96Mb 4-Demensional KnockYourEyesOut Graphics Warp Accelerator Card..for only $650! YOU JUST GOTTA HAVE IT! BE THE ENVY OF EVERYONE ELSE!". So folks run right out and hock the car to get the card, then 6 months to a year later, it's on 'Special' for $150 plus a $20 rebate..... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
I do not know about that, but this is the first time I have seen prices link this.
Why I have found simms 16MB for $20
EDO and FDM 32MB for 90
512MB PC100 ECC 600
Duron 600 $69
T'bird 1000 $289
Celeron 600 $89
Just examples
Me I am looking at GigaByte K7 sck-A $140
Duron 700 for $79
A atx case with 300 watt powersupply.
A couple 20GB HD ATA100
May have to wait a while longer than I thought. Maddening https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Bistro mentioned a post with a step by step way back Queen of Hearts. I'm thinking I need to review the posts and the sources. What I want to know is how can Mosaic say so much with so few words?
I'm agreeing with ya, bistro https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Great ! They won't go back up will they, or is this like Stock Market ?
I'm getting ready to look inside here.
Then I'll know for sure what to put on my list.
Good work Train ! Too bad it's not what you need.
The same way I can say so little with so many words.... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Thinking about prices in general. Is any part of the country cheaper for what we need or is it the same all over?
Part of your required reading greengoose !
Looks good QoH. Thanks. But why me?
Nah...once the prices drop, they usually stay dropped. But you have to be careful; there are some either very slow or very dumb, or very dishonest vendors out there who'll advertise components at yesterday's prices. Pays to shop.
Generally, prices are pretty much the same all over. Watch it though. Remember that "Mom and Pop" computer shops don't deal in large volumes, so prices may be a tad more (but those shops can be a great source for specialty and hard-to-find items). Larger computer stores deal with larger volume--prices can be lower; but in some, the variety is lacking. Net shopping is great, but you have to figure in the shipping and the interest on the credit card.
