New Ad-Aware Signature File 129-28.10.2001

davey, the link I posted this morning...about 6 posts above yours does have the correct updated update... it will show as 128-29.10.2001 in your GUI. I'm pointing you to that one, because I put it there.

I also believe the main server is updated. Along with the other official mirror.

Now, I am not sure about the answer to Adobe Acrobat. The reason is, that mine has not had an entry there in quite a while. I don't know that it ever did.

Remember that the Adobe Browser plug-in is different from the stand alone reader.

But my Adobe plug-in has acted screwy in the past, so maybe this key has been a problem child for me, prior to yesterday. I'll monitor a reinstall after a bit, and see what shakes out.

EDIT: I have Adobe Acrobat 4.0, and just revisited a page known for .pdf cacheing headaches... and a large pdf worked fine, via the Browser Plug-In , with no entry in the BHO key. My key remains the same as posted in the MowerGun thread.

Again... the key is there... but without a value... it's blank.

I wouldn't lose any sleep about Alexa. I don't recall which Board it was on now but there was a thread a little over a week ago about Alexa with a post which explained a means of getting rid of it. The method was to delete the registry key which Mowergun found in his travels.

I did delete the key (but not before exporting a copy) and I have experienced no problems in using any programs or Windows features. I am running IE 5.01 SP2 and I have noticed that I do not have a 'Show Related Links' item in my IE Tool menu; whether there was one prior to my deleting the reg. key I don't know as I never noticed it.

I've refupdated to 10/29/01 regfile (making it the current .sig file), Welshjim dude...

the file renaming, extension changes, and the new reflist.bak file I made Sunday makes the 10/17/01 update my current reflist.bak file automatically!

The info from the (") on, are the values that will show in the right hand pane when the CSLID string is highlighted (the long number). This key (from the number on) is the Alexa entries that power "Show Related Links"... I still don't think they are a problem... and Alexa won't be engaged until you use their features.

But if you wanted all traces removed... yes, highlight the number and "Delete" it. That will also remove "Show Related Links" from the Graphic User Interface of IE.

The BHO key I was refering to is the 'other' key, that was flagged by the 10-28 reflist.

Note: There are no quotes ( " ) after the Objects bracket... that means there is no value for this key. It's just sitting there waiting for one.

Now late yesterday, as I mentioned... I fussed around with my copy of Adobe Acrobat 4... It does not need anything in that key.

In other words, if folks ran the reflist of 10-28 and were worried about Acrobat... I know version 4 doesn't care. Mine has not had it, that I am aware of... I've been watching these keys for some time... since some of these issues starting rolling around the net.

The browser plug-in for Acrobat... allows .pdf files clicked on the net to open in IE with Adobe tool bars. The Reader uses it's own GUI. And can be launched from a shortcut to access saved .pdf's.

I've flagged Mowergun in another post, 'cause I think he wants his entries back.

It looks to me like you want your's gone. Or at least the first Alexa key.

If this dosen't clear it up... let me know.

Renovator. Thanks for confirming the reason for the 'Show Related Links' item being missing from my IE Tools menu.

davey. GUI (pronounced gooey)are the initials for Graphical User Interface and I think what Renovator was pointing to was the "Referencefile in use" info appearing at the bottom of the Adaware interface when you activate its exe file. No doubt he will correct me if I have misinterpreted his meaning.

Yes Alwill, and not to put too fine a point on it, but...

those of us still manually updateing, will generally only see the file as reflist.zip when we download. And the contained file will always show as reflist.sig. (for ease of overwrite, and recognition by the app).

I keep mentioning it, so folks get in the habit of checking the Ad-Aware Interface to see what signature file they are really dealing with. ('Cause from time to time...there will be a faux pas.)

A year or so ago it wasn't that big of a deal... but with spyware growing new heads every few days, it gets hard to keep up. And Urizen's job, gets that much tougher.

My guess is that more and more folks will switch to the RefUpdater, as it continues to prove itself... and that will probably make it's way into the main app.

Now... you probably figured out that... I pasted the exported reg key... and therefore when one does that...the value stuff in the right hand pane will show up in quotes... after the close bracket.

So, yes. Deleting the long number when it is in the left hand pane, will take out all the stuff in it's directory also... which would show in the right hand pane.

If you export the key first, you can always put it back. If you forget what they are... just open them in Notepad (Highlight > Shift + Right Click > 'Open With')... and have a look.

wasn't sure HOW you copied the exported reg key in the first place, but now see...
the expoted key (and it's values) can be opened as a .txt in notepad...
and it shows up in there like that?...

you're mentioning this because I'd said that the values for that key (it's directory entries?)? showed up a bit different than yours, as you'd posted?...

if so, fact is I noticed (added quote marks and brackets) but didn't concern with that difference...
the entries were not all identical and they were in different order than yours...

if that wasn't what you were referring to - juss disregard stuff I just said!...

Another way of viewing the contents is by right clicking the exported .reg file and clicking 'Edit'in the pop-up menu; this will open the file in Notepad. Should the occasion arise where it might be necessary to restore the key to the registry, you can do this by again right clicking the file and this time clicking 'Merge'
