SP3 is installed following your precise instructions. Chipset will be installed last per your advice...is video lumped with them? I see no listing for video drivers specifically unless they're within a larger category on the page. There are two Conexant audio driver packages, so as in the case of the 8 sets of drivers for a NIC, I have to know which one to use...ditto for keyboard, mouse, etc/solutions/multimedia/modem (which I prefer to disable in the BIOS per your info)/storage driver did download and install successfully. The graphics driver installation stopped with the following message" "The INF file does not contain information for this system's hardware."

What is still MISSING in Device Manager? If the drivers installed ok for video/graphics, then you don't need to install additional drivers. Windows has a lot of built-in drivers, even more when you add SP3 (that's why you install SP3 FIRST).

You only need to install drivers for devices that have a yellow exclamation point or a question mark.

If there are multiple drivers for the same device, install the latest driver. If that one doesn't work, you can try an older driver.
Example:
Synaptics Touchpad Driver
2006-04-10 , Version8.2.23 N, 5.51M (this one has the latest date)

1394 Net Adapter (this is firewire. ignore it)
Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC (this is your WIRED network card)

Are those the installed network devices or MISSING devices? Neither is a wireless network card.

Are you trying the drivers out or not?
The Bluetooth and Media card reader only had one driver on the HP site. Did they not work?

Multimedia audio...I downloaded the Conexant EQ file and ran it...314k only...what I saw was a question asking me if I wanted to add a value to the Registry...so I clicked yes. I restarted and the Device Manager still shows a yellow question mark next to Multimedia audio.

Choosing between the two Video Controller drivers, which one should I attempt first? VGA or the other?

Finally, the Bluetooth driver...I read the article you pointed to in your weblink How to Find A Driver, but when I use the identical procedure successful with all the other yellow question marks, IOW: highlight/right-click/Details/Manufacturer ID, I get exactly what I show in my previous message, whether it's the Device Instance ID or the Manufacturer ID. I realized that the number didn't look like all the rest, but had no workaround.

My delay in responding back was a family mini-crisis...so sorry!

The video adapters are for the same chipset, so it will be one driver. If the drivers on the HP site don't work, try the ones from the link I posted earlier. Make sure to choose XP in the Operating System list (Home or Pro doesn't matter).

There was nothing to uninstall in Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs after the first attempt! And "No Audio Device" is the result of the second attempt at install of the other Conexant package, although there was a progress window of drivers being installed which gave me hope that I'd finally hear something. Yet there is nothing in the Control Panel save for SP3 and the Texas Instruments Mass Storage Device.

One good thing I may have uncovered on the outside chance that you haven't already done so yourself, I've attached in .jpeg form here. On the HP Drivers page, within Operating System -- Enhancements and QFEs -- is an entry for Intel Chipset...is that what you could not find earlier?Attachment 11749

Oh ya. I saw that, but it don't think you need them. If you saw something like SMBus or USB controllers in the "Other Devices", then that's the chipset.

Bluetooth mystery has been put to bed...if I download the graphics accelerator .exe file from the Intel site and burn it to a CD prior to placing the CD in the laptop CD/DVD drive, as I've done today for all the driver downloads, will double-clicking it install it or will I need to find the setup..exe file? I ask because the release notes state that a utility such as pkzip or winzip will be necessary to unzip the setup.exe file.

OK, 2 yellow ?? remain: multimedia audio controller and pci modem, soon to be disabled in the BIOS. I performed a search of the entire computer using Conexant as the keyword and not one file came up??!!

My next gift to myself is a flashdrive with some decent capacity. You're so right about the portability vs. lots of CDs everywhere.

Conexant has a LOT of drivers. Check the PCI ID of that device again. Your first code came up as Intel. Maybe it was a typo?

I have a very basic question, but one never knows: the right-click menu on a driver in Dev Mgr shows both delete and uninstall (remove all software files). I've always wanted to know why the two, because they seem to mean the same thing?

Again, should anything be done with any of the controllers in the Sound, video and game controllers area? I had been focusing exclusively on the Multimedia Audio Driver with the yellow question mark in Other Devices?

In general if a driver set doesn't work, delete the offending device and then try a different set of drivers. Allow Windows to detect the device and install drivers for it again. BTW, I mentioned that in post #50 and #54.

Delete or uninstall? I see disable and uninstall, not delete.

There are some basic Windows things in there like audio and video codecs in Sound/video/game controller. If the audio device was installed properly, it would show up as Conexant AC97 audio or something to that effect.

I uninstalled, and now I'm seeing a request to find drivers for new hardware, which is the multimedia audio installer...getting ready to drag that executable file to the desktop from the burned CD and double-click to get started.

What is the proper sequence of events once I see the "Windows has found new hardware" prompt after boot? I uninstalled the previous Multimedia Audio Driver from the Device Manager and restarted, thus the prompt. I have the driver install program downloaded from the HP site and burned onto a disk. Do I drag the program from the CD-R to my Desktop first and then point the install to it?

You can just cancel the new hardware prompt for now. The devices should get detected again during the driver setup.

You just need to drag it from the CDR to the desktop and then run it.

I think you mean installing the drivers via Device Manager when you say "point the install to it". You would need to have the driver infs already extracted for that. Just run the .exe files and they should extract and run the setup for you.

As a last resort, you can try getting the drivers from Windows Update.

Open Windows Update in IE, and choose Custom. Click on Hardware, Optional and see if your video and sound drivers come up. I prefer to have the drivers from the manufacturer, but that doesn't seem to be working for you.

When the install completed, a results box was presented...it labeled the process FAILURE. When I went to DevMgr, the multimedia audio controller was still one of two remaining yellow question marks, the other the PCI modem which I want to disable in the BIOS.

Using Internet Explorer, go to Windows Update and download and install everything available, (with the exception of Bing and Desktop Search). When that's done, reboot and repeat, then reboot and repeat again, and continue doing this until there are no more updates available. Now reboot once more and then check Device Manager to see if the yellow splats are gone.

Thank you, Doc. Should I still hold off installation of any AV until what you recommend is complete? The IE currently installed is ancient ver 6...will that be updated as I install everything available, as you say, or should I try a separate install of IE 8 first? That's as high a ver as XP can go with IE, correct?

Yes, just don't surf anywhere else other than Windows Update.

Note: When Windows Update discovers there is no Anti-Virus installed, it usually automatically installs Microsoft Security Essentials for you.

2 folders? It should try to install the latest Windows Updater, not extract to folders.
All you need to do is double-click WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe
Click Next.
Choose I agree and click Next
Click Finish

My bad, Midknyte, it rechecked all my discs and found the proper one...more fuel to the fire for using a flash drive!

I'm using your advice to click Custom first...it is taking a long time to check for the latest updates, I must say.

One interesting occurrence is the appearance of a window every time I (re)boot asking me if I want to install drivers for new hardware that's been found...it has to be the multi audio controller, no? That can hopefully be worked out. The good news is that the install of IE8 has worked wonders for the laptop's stability...no more crashes. Do you think I should continue to wait for the checking for the latest updates in Custom or just go for it and bring in everything from the update site, Custom and otherwise, except for the Bing Bar and Windows Search as SpywareDoctor cautioned.

The check for the latest updates continues...wasn't there an issue with this recently, i. e., endlessly searching for updates without ever getting there?

So you found the HP drivers disc? Try the audio drivers from that.

I'm assuming the video drivers installed ok, since you didn't mention them.

I would still use the Custom option in Windows Update. That way you can see the list of updates before they install. You'll probably have to run Windows Update several times, since some patches need to be applied before others.
This month's issue was with MS Office updates repeating. Last month's was with Windows 7.

Things are looking better as I've now isolated the updates for the 3 Conexant devices in Windows Update, Optional. If they work, even though I plan to disable the PCI modem, maybe I'll be without any yellow question marks for the first time!

I never found any HP drivers disc, but did try to use the CD I burned with the other Conexant driver package. The path I attempted to make to get the Found New Hardware installer to use the .exe file I placed on the Desktop did not work. But like I say, I have new hope now that the Updates Options downloads might solve the riddle once installed.

You're supposed to just run the .exe. You were trying to install the driver manually, but you would need the extracted .inf files to do that. Pointing to the .exe won't work. I mentioned this in post #59.

I realized almost after the fact while I was away from the laptop after it asked for restart that I had heard the Windows shutdown sound! Then the startup sound...woohoo, almost all of it worked. I decided to cancel a .NET framework install after it had downloaded in favor of getting all the hardware optionals handled first...now it shows as failed : / Could that end up being a big deal?

Here's what cancelled (failed):

Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Client Profile for Windows XP x86 (KB 982670)

Can I get that one back for download and install if it's necessary? I figure that since it wasn't in the high-priority update category, it might not be a big deal, but I felt queasy cancelling the install...

Sound never "sounded" so good!! And there are no yellow question marks in the Device Manager!!

One day after completing most of the updates, installing MSE and running a quick scan, I do notice a considerable slowness in my laptop. In and of itself I don't consider it a big deal, but one thing I do want to mention is the appearance of 1) an AVG SafeGuard toolbar which I never knowingly installed. I wouldl ike to get rid of it as soon as possible...is there an uninstaller? It's especially troubling because, even after 2 reformats, I noticed a tendency to see an AVG webpage load as the default IE6 "homepage" before I was able to install IE8 and begin the drivers/update/virus install process. Not sure if, after 2 reformats, that could still happen unless there is/was a deeper infection problem...like a rootkit or something?

Also, whenever I reboot/start up, a "Device Driver Installation complete" window is the first thing I see. No results listed, and I all I have to do is click the OK button and the window goes away -- until next time.

Last question...on this type of HP CTO laptop running XP SP3, is there a way to "print screen?" Typically all I meed to do is tap the PrtScn SysRq button and I can paste what's been put in temporary memory into, say, Paint. When I've tried that simple procedure with this laptop, however, nothing is pasted. Is there an alternate means of doing this?
