ok.
i just followed the instructions on the JMU page and installed the printer as a local printer in the xp vm. printer icon shows up, as default and it shows if i open a text file and print. however, nothing prints and i get a warning from windows that "the document fails to print". additionally i get an error in the print queue.
got to be that interface between xp and 7 is not open.
so you installed as a local printer and created a tcpip port to \\hostname\printername?
can you ping the host from the xp vm?
can you map drive letter on the xp vm to a shared folder on the Win7 host?

What are the names of the Win7 host and shared printer? It might be easier for you if I use the actual names.
hostname = Win7 computer name
printername = Printer share name
Ping is a basic network test command. You have to open a command prompt and type ping hostname
Start - Run - cmd
ping hostname
You should see 4 lines like this if it is successful:
Reply from 192.168.1.20: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128
If you can't even get a successful ping, then there is a problem with your network settings.
Do you have any firewalls enabled on either system? If so, disable them for now.
And you're sure you shared the printer on the Win7 host? On the XPVM, go to Start - Run and type in \\hostnameQuote:

That should open up a folder showing the resources on the Win7 host. You should see the printername listed. If you double-click on printername, it should try to install as a network printer on the XPVM.
Once we can confirm the printershare, you'd install the printer as local with the LPT1 port (No TCPIP port). We will run NET USE to set the LPT1 to \\hostname\printername for your qbasic.
I don't see how reinstalling the VM is going to help. You need to do some basic network setup, even if you do a reinstall.

pinging ZESZUT does give me those 4 reply lines.
i turned both firewalls off and typed "\\ZESZUT" in the run command on the xp. it tells me "the network path was not found".
i get this same message on the other machines here. but when they go to network places, they DO find ZESZUT.

honestly, i haven't done anything ... all of a sudden i am able to print on the laser jet printer .... from WORD that is.

So you installed Office on the XP VM and it could print? What printer port settings are you using?
You need to setup a local printer on LPT1 on the XPVM first. You don't need to use a TCPIP port, because we are remapping LPT1. After you create that printer, you run the NET USE command from a command prompt.
NET USE LPT1: \\ZESZUT\ZESZUTLASERJET /persistent:yes
I know this is complicated, but it's because of what you are trying to do. :p
the ports i see are as follows:
LPT1: .. Printer Port .. HP LaserJet P2035 2
TS001 .. ZESZUT: PRN6 .. HP LaserJet P2035 (from ZESZUT)
ZeszutLaser .. Standard TCP/IP Port
now, i have 2 printers showing in the printer window. HP LaserJet P2035 (as default) and HP LaserJet P2035 2. word will print to the default but NOT to "2". "2" is the local printer i just set up on the vm xp.
i have no idea what the ZeszutLaser is from. maybe a failed attempt?
and sorry, the "NET USE LPT1: \\zeszut\zeszutlaserjet /persistent:yes" seems to have done nothing.

You can get rid of the ZeszutLaser.
If you can't even get to \\zeszut from Start-Run, then \\zeszut\zeszutlaserjet shouldn't work either. That's what was confusing when you said you could print.
Are you using NAT for the VM network settings?
In the VM properties, check the network adapter. Change it from Shared (NAT) to your actual NIC. See if that helps.

TS001 is a Terminal Services port. That printer probably got added through the Integration Services.
It looks like there is a way to redirect LPT1 to a Terminal Services port, but I'm not sure if it's any easier.

If someone else out there is using XP Mode, maybe they can shed more light on this. Like I mentioned, I use VMWare.
BTW, what IP did you get when you pinged zeszut from the VM?

cant delete the ZeszutLaser port. it says it's in use. by WHOM i have no idea lol.
i followed the technet directions. i got to the point of "Use the Following DNS server Addresses'. when i used the "ipconfig" it runs by so fast and disappears so that i can't catch the numbers.
i'll follow the experts-exchange instructions and see what i can accomplish from them.
if nothing helps, i'll just have to output the qbasic printing to a text file and print it. it's "do-able" but not what i was hoping for.

oh ... i do have an additional question ... when i launch the VM XP it always asks for my password. is there someway to set it up so it remembers it?

That means that port is assigned to one of your printers. You can't delete a port if it is in use by a printer. you'd have to set the printer to use a port like lpt2 first, then you can delete the ZeszutLaser port.Quote:

Otherwise, you can go to start-run and enter control userpasswords2. Uncheck Users must enter a username and password... Click Ok, then you'll be prompted for the default account and password.
BTW, I normally don't set passwords on my vms.

That's an IPv6 address. You should have been getting something like 192.168.1.10. You said you saw the 4 lines as I posted.
Do you still want to continue or are you going to use your workaround? I already mentioned changing from NAT to NIC on the VM settings. If this is too much for you, then your text file solution might be best.

Even Autologon didn't work? You mean the XP OS password, right? What else did you install besides qbasic and Office? If you installed .NET, that can interfere with the XP login.
It's not the NIC address. I said "In the VM properties, check the network adapter. Change it from Shared (NAT) to your actual NIC." You want to set the VM to use a NIC so that it gets its own IP on the network like a regular client system. You shouldn't be getting IPv6 addresses from ping.Quote:

To recap the situation. You want to run qbasic in the XP VM. In order to print via LPT1 port, you're going to map it to a shared printer on the Win7 host. To do that, you need to establish a network connection between the VM and the Win7 host.
I thought I had another workaround, but you wouldn't be able to re-share a printer that is installed as a network printer.
Open a command prompt on the Win7vm. Run the following:
ipconfig > C:\ipconfig.txt
Open C:\ipconfig.txt with notepad and then copy/paste into this thread.
After you change the XPVM to the NIC setting, do the same thing on the XPVM.
The IPv4 Address on Win7 should be in the same subnet as the XPVM's.
Ex. Win7 IPv4 Address: 192.168.1.10
XPVM IP Address: 192.168.1.11

i'm sorry, i've been running around like a headless chicken this morning (our NAS died overnight) and forgot how to change NIC settings on the xpvm.
i installed qbasic and word on the xpvm. tried to put synctoy there also but xp balked about needing .net. i did see a windows update go by that installed .net or part of it. but even with that, synctoy would not work. should i uninstall the net updates?

Interesting that you are on a 10.x network. When you test the XPVM, it should also have a 10.1.10.x number.
You can leave .NET. Try deleting the ASP.NET machine account and see if you can login without a password.

on the PLUS side, i did get a chance just now to install PRINTFIL from the link you gave me. IT WORKS GREAT. solves the LPT printer problem. YAY.
on the down side ...
there is no ASP.NET machine account and there are no NET installs under installed programs.
i changed the addresses on the xpvm to be the same as the 7. still not able to see 7's printers.
i do have a USB connected injet that i'd like to be able to access from xpvm. no LPT printing to it. just merged printing from word. it's shared and everything. i'm going back over the earlier posts to see about adding it.
So you entered a static IP? What IPs did you use? If you did it right, you should be able to ping the Win7host via IP.Quote:

I didn't mean to recommended PRINTFIL, but that's your call. My point was for you to change the VM to NIC instead of NAT. The NET USE command should have worked to forward your printing. The problem is your XP doesn't see the shared printer.
Hmm. Not sure why else you would be required to enter a password if you didn't set one. control userpasswords2 has worked for me. Are you sure you did it correctly?

oh, i did some googling and discovered that the USB menu in the xpvm will allow me to switch the inkjet printer from 7 to xp. i did. it works.

You cannot use the same IP for two systems. That's like having a 2 houses with the same address. You should change the XPVM's IP to one that is not currently being used. Did you try just letting it use DHCP instead of setting a Static IP?Quote:

PRINTFIL is not a free product. It might work, but I don't use it. If I wanted you to use PRINTFIL, I would have said so.

For now, you can try switching from 10.1.10.192 to 10.1.10.200.
DHCP means it would obtain an IP automatically from the router.

Now you should be able to ping the Win7host:
Open a command prompt and type:
ping 10.1.10.192 (you should get the 4 replys)
ping ZESZUT (you should see 4 replys from 10.1.10.192)
If those are successful, check if you can see ZESZUT on the network.
ok. it's been changed. i used the ipconfig command to check.
yesssssssssssss. i can see zeszut as well as all the other pc's on the network.
and am able to see both the laserjet and inkjet printers on zeszut.
Ok good. Like I mentioned, using the NIC setting allows the VM to have its own IP like a regular PC.
See if you can connect to the shared printer now. You can connect as a network printer just to test it out first.
\\ZESZUT\ZESZUTLASERJET
If that works, add another printer on the XPVM as local using the LPT1 port. Open a command prompt and run the NET USE command to forward LPT1 to the shared printer.

also, i keep getting copies of the laser jet printer in both 7 and xp. don't know why.
