Oops !! What was I thinking ?? I'll chalk it down to the fact that I was tired when I made that post ! I've download a smaller version which will fit a CD. I'll burn it to a CD and run it and let you know later. Thanks.

I ran Knoppix CD this morning and it worked when my laptop switch is set to STINMIA (I assume this setting is the Standard setting (??) . On this setting, it didin't work on Windows before). But Knoppix don't seem to work if my laptop setting is set to SPEED (it works on Windows on this setting). Knoppix stopped at PCMCIA found, starting cardmgr after it performed CPU frequency scaling enabled for CPU#01
So not sure what all this boils down to. If based on my "assumed" Standard setting and it runs ok, then does this mean something is wrong with Windows ?
By the way, is Knoppix only in German or I was unlucky enough to download a German edition ? But at bootup, it was in English. But once it gets to the Desktop, everything is in German ! I was using Knoppix v5.1.1 If there is a English version to download, how do I find out that version is in English ? Thanks.
Stamina = Endurance, Speed = Swift.
Your laptop has a standard Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100 (for STAMINA mode) as well as a NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS notebook GPU (for SPEED mode)
Knoppix recognizes the Intel X3100 and Windows the GeForce 8400M.
Since Sony probably had both modes working in Windows, then yes, it sounds like Windows is broken . . . unless there is some hardware problem causing the issue.
If it was my laptop, I would try a Windows System Restore first. If that failed, I would restore my own System (image) backup. If that also failed, I would then reinstall the factory restore. If it still wasn't working, it would point to a hardware issue.
As I guess you found out, if a Knoppix .iso filename ends in _DE.iso it's German, and if ends in _EN.iso, it's English.
I've done the Windows Restore point part at the early stage when this problem started and it didn't work.
I've never done a System (image) backup restore before, so I guess this is a good time to find out if the ones I made (using Macirum, Arconis, as well as Easues - yap, 3 different programs) will work !! It'll also be interesting to know which will work even though at that time when I made these images, I did verified that they are ok. All I need now is time and energy. Will post back when I get round to doing it. Thanks for all the help.
LATEST UPDATE
Just to keep everyone posted.
Today I restored using my systems image and everything is working now - well...sort of...as there is one annoying problem which I hope is something that is easy to solve.
My regular TV catchup player (BBC iPlayer desktop) does not seem to be responsive after it is installed. When I clicked on its desktop icon, nothing happens. But when I right click on it and then selected OPEN..that appears on the pop up menu, it says that the program is already running. But I can't see anything or the usual icon on the task bar.
Does anyone have any idea how to over come this ? I have uninstalled and reinstalled a couple of times with the same results. I have also re-download the program and re-install it, but still the same rersult.
Many thanks.
Open taskmanager > processes and close it.
Hi Train - I wish I had seen your post here sooner before I went through the lengthy process of tracing all the links and deleting all traces that is connected to this program and then reinstalling it, which thankfully worked this time.
It seems that just uninstalling from Add/Remove via Control Panel is not enough. There are links of this program also in Adobe Air in C --User Name ---Application Data --- to delete also.
Anyway, thanks, everyone, for all your time and efforts in helping with the problems raised in this post. They are much appreciated.
You probably should make a current disk image while the computer is running well. Also, if AVG was the culprit for the original problem you may want to either disable the feature that caused the boot issue or maybe even dump AVG altogether and go with something like Avast or MSsecurity essentials.
Hi Fink - yes, I planned to make a current disk image. I'm just about finishing up the updates, etc. It's taken me over 7 hours or so from restore to updating the programs.
I can safely confirm it is not AVG that is the culprit. As per SpywareDr's suggestion of doing some tests in using a Knoppix CD/DVD, it indicated my system was corrupted. In fact, I have use back AVG and updated it to the latest and everything is running ok - touch wood !
Thanks for the reminder about making a current disk image. That's the next thing on my to do list.
Well, time to dump AVG then.
I have gotten that off several computers using the removal toll.

To access your account for this cluster %^&$ that Avg has done you have to access your pc in safemode then bring up the avg settings and uncheck / disable avg watch dog. Once you do that, reboot into regular windows and the issue is resolved. Then UNINSTALL avg and put on free AVAST and you will NEVER have issues like this again !
Anyone...please help. I am having the same problem. I have read through this post but I do not have a copyimage to restore.
I cannot get into my desktop, even if I try using Safemode. It gets stuck trying to load what appears to be an AVG driver.
If I try loading into regular windows, in a non-safe mode, I get that black screen starting AVG Watchdog and it becomes stuck on that screen. I have to power down to get rid of it.
I have a Tablet PC and there is no internal CD drive.
I am in a panic.
I also think it is related to my video graphics driver.
Please help
Joe
If your tablet PC does not have a CD/DVD drive, you could create and then boot from a Windows XP USB flash drive.
Not near as good but, boot it from some sort of "Live" Linux USB flash drive and attempt to disable AVG. Or remove the drive from the tablet, connect it to another computer and then attempt to disable AVG.
The easiest way though would be to get the tablet booted up into Windows XP's Safe mode and disable AVG, then boot it up into nomal mode from its own hard drive and replace AVG with another Anti-Virus solution.
Great news!!!
After posting last night, I hit F8 and choose, last known good configuration startup/boot. I got into windows. Lucky me.
Then
1) I went to HP and reinstalled the graphics adaptor/driver info.
2) I backed up every file which was important to me overnight
3) I went to device manager and I ENABLED the updated driver which I installed last night.
4) I just restarted in a "normal" windows procedure and I'm back up and running.
Yesterday afternoon, I switched to another video/graphics driver/setting for my video capture software to perform better. I guess AVG does not like the new video driver/setting.
Thanks for everyone's posts over the past few years. I really appreciate a site like this where people reach out and help one another.
Thanks DOC
You're welcome.
Hi there,
I have an ancient dell desktop PC and just had it restored last weekend, it was working just like new.. added memory and all. I installed AVG 2014 on it and didn't start having a problem until today. When I boot my system up I get a blue screen showing that the system is trying to initialize some AVG watchdog it stops at 2014-02-13 19:10:50.328 phase 1 finished. It just sits in this blue screen and won't go any further. I have tried booting in safe mode and every other mode. The only thing that happens is now the screen is black with a list of system drivers and the last line reads multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)window\system32\drivers\avgidshx.sys
then it just sits here. I can't get to a spot that allows me to uninstall anything. Is my computer completely gone now, or is there another way to fix it?
Two possible methods come to mind:
1. Reload Windows again and choose something else besides AVG as your antivirus.
2. Either remove the harad drive and install it temporarily in another system, and remove or rename the avgidshx.sys file, then reinstall the hard drive in the original system and try booting it, or boot the original system from a bootable CD that allows you to delete or rename files and do the same thing to the avgidshx.sys file, then reboot.
It also might be worth trying this method to first try to repair the AVG installation then if it works you can uninstall it as suggested..

You will need to burn an AVG rescue CD with the .iso file you download. Here is one way to do it..

If you do get the computer to boot use the appropriate AVG uninstaller to get rid of it..
