Good observation....
I deliberatly did an upgrade into my main pc as i was gong to format it and pass it down the food chain.
Upgrade took 3 hours simply because there is so much on the hard drive.
Firstly 7 looks good.
Everything works.
The UAC has 4 levels now. It was by default on level 3. I changed it to level 1 and what happened was the gadgets would not load nor could i log into my server. I went up top level 2 and and gadgets came back and the server. The gadget is no longer a bar. The gadgets are single and you can put them anywhere you want.
If there are multiple open windows and you move one to the side it automaticlt resizes it self. If you move a minimised window to to the top of the screen it maximises. Good touch that. If you have multiple windows open and move the mouse pointer to the bottom right hand side of the screen the windows become invisi\able.
I did a performace check and it changed from the 5.7 i had down to 2.5. Because of the hard drive it says. (It is a sata 2).
7 is good and will be worth the upgrade
There's going to be a lot of surprised and sad people when the Beta expires in August. Just like last time....
NOTICE: When the beta expires, there will be a memorial service here at VDr at 1:00 PM EST. Train and SuperSparks will deliver the eulogy. VDr has asked that, in lieu of flowers, donations should be made to the Sydney P. Fingerglut Windows 3.1 Memorial Fund...this charity is dedicated to get back to the simpler life and make Windows 3.1 once again the world standard for operating systems.
It took me a while, but now I know what I wanted to say.Quote:
Then again look at WinXP, there really weren't all that many differences from Win2000
In both cases:
2000 to XP, and
Vista to 7
the latter OSes, are simply little bit more user friendly.
Said that, for experienced computer user, I can't see, so far, anything in Win 7, what makes it better, than Vista.
Ughhhh....LOL
Heard those statement s before 95 to 98 etc.
Now for something of a eyeopener, boot a XP machine and start installing Windows 7.
About 2/3rds of the way through, it will pop up some error messages.
Closed them out and hit the reset button. Chkdsk started up and man, it is deleteing files even in $I30 listing.
Now the install is starting over.
LOL, best have lots of patience going this route.
What makes it better? Well...I don't know what makes it better for the user, but it's better for Microsoft....they can charge you $$$ for an OS that is essentially "Vista With All The Features It Should Have Had In The First Place". I wouldn't be surprised if they found some MS programmer's notes in the back of a filing cabinet that outlined what Vista should have been and they just looked at each other and said "Oh crap....".
I've read the articles about Windows 7 and so far I haven't seen anything that really could not have been added as a series of updates. MS marketing ploy #347: Add a few things and call it something other than "Vista" because of the bad history associated with that name.
Dear Steve Ballmer: I'm not convinced.
98 to 98SE deja vue all over.

Personally, I look forward to purchasing Windows 7 in August. What I have seen thus far, with Windows 7, MS has again delivered a fine OS. I've enjoyed XP for seven years, but W7 is just what I've needed. MS gets my nod on this...
Looks alright to me and is running just fine on this old antique.
2500 Barton, 1.84 GHz and 768 MB of ram.
GF2 32 MB agp video card
And for the heck of it, I did a upgrade from Vista SP1.
Installed on my backup. This machine is about like the one Train used except it has 1GB memory. Also use a Promise Ultra 150 TX Controller card. Have 2 150GB Seagate HDD's connected to the card. Unplugged the secondary drive. Wiped the main drive clean and installed Windows 7. Install went fine except it couldn't find the drivers for my LAN-PCI network card. Had to install the drivers manually. Didn't have this problem with XP-Pro,it found and installed with no prob.
But here's the biggee so far. Shut down and plugged the secong drive in. It's exactly the same drive as the primary. XP had no problem recognizing the second drive when installed in this manner. Windows 7 would not boot! Stuck on the start-up screen. Did a hard reboot and chose regular boot from the screen. Same thing 3 times. Then chose a repair boot after the last booger. It said unrecognized hardware installed and errored again.
Disconnected drive #2 and it booted up fine.
More fun on the way I'm sure, but not too thrilled so far...
Wonder if they will allow you to fresh install a upgrade version like they did in Vista?
boots
Train/Ridge -
Vista was a dog until I installed 2GB. Are you saying 7 runs ok with less?
There is really no way to say, since everyone has pristine install.
Start installing first 50 programs, and we'll see.
I was not joking. XP does not run as well on this rig.
Beleive me, if the Final runs as well, Vista, on my laptop will be replaced!
Ridgerunr , if it will boot with the card in, try installing the drivers.
Mass storage in Device manager will tell the tale. So if it will take the drivers, then try the hdds.
Had to do it that way in Windows Home server. Only way we could get the pci cards to work.
Another blog on Win7 (though it dwells on a lot of trivia).
Not much difference between it and Vista

Samsung ML-1710 laser printer doesn't work--tried a couple of different drivers--won't install.
