Haven't seen one yet but I'm not sure how well the 3D glasses would work since I wear regular glasses. If they're uncomfortable or annoying it would likely spoil the film for me.

IMAX 3D glasses are very large and made to warp around spectacles. I am a contact lens wearer but I have worn spectacles with 3D glasses on too and had no problems. So go and have fun with a 3D film :)Quote:

Saving Private Ryan certainly took the war film genre to a new level of realism to a point that you are almost feel like you are in it (especially on the big screen). Not much of a storyline but its the journey of the soldiers and the powerful yet subtle perfomances of the leads that made it an oscar winner. As for Castaway - what a great film - I cannot imagine anyone else but Hanks (my favourite actor) to keep us so transfixed on someone stranded on an island for 3/4 of screen time - and only Zemekis could pull off a trick like that.
Saving Private Ryan is a film I have never watched, but I really want too.
I watched The Shawshank Redemption for the first time last year, fantastic film. It's a film I can watch again and again.
I had alot of problems with the script for Saving Private Ryan....not the least of which, the premise. But there is no doubt about the production values and quality.
Personally...I thought the HBO mini-series, Band of Brothers was better than Ryan. I know it's hard to compare a mini-series to a movie, but they are similar in the way they showed combat scenes. Both handled it well.....
I watched Click last night. I am an Adam Sandler fan, and this film didn't disappoint.
It was very funny, but it also had a serious side to it, which I don't often see in Sandler films. Nice touch.
If there ever was a boring moment in the film they made up for it in the form off Kate Beckinsale :D
Its strange how many comic actors can fall into a "love im" "hate im" category. Unfortunately, Adam Sandlers is a bit irritating for me YET I am a fan of Jim Carrey films who has the biggest irritatable potential. The trailer for click was funny though (hasselhoff slap joke was hilarious) - so I may borrow the dvd when next time I got the funny bone itch.
The Hoff scenes are really funny:D If you like the typical Sandler film then you should like this one.
I know what you mean though. I am a fan of Jim Carrey too, but I think its the irritability that makes the good films.
I think Jim Carrey has slackened a bit with his films recently. The last Carrey film I watched was Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, which was really good.
I'm in two minds on whether to watch The Number 23. It's had some good reviews but when I see Jim Carrey I see Dumb & Dumber or Ace Ventura.
Worth a shot I guess, I might be surprised.
I have never been a fan of Sandler....
The only movie I didn't hate that he was in was Anger Managment, but I credit jack Nicholson for saving that film. :D
When it comes to humor....tastes are even more variable. Most people I work with love Sandler and do not understand why I don't like his humor. But by the same token...I love Monty Python and they hate them. Go figure what tickles one's funny bone.;)
BTW...I seperate my all-time great lists into two categories. Comedies....and everything else....
On my list of all-time great comedies....near the top....Monty Python and the Holy Grail. I know it word for word I think. :)
BTW....I liked them all of course....but time to name your favorite Monty Python member....
I am going with John Cleese.......:D
Cleese without a doubt but the rest aren't too far behind. He also had Fawlty Towers, possibly the funniest sitcom ever, but Michael Palin has all his excellent travel shows, Terry Jones has made some very good educational and entertaining historical series and of course Terry Gilliam has directed some very good movies including Brazil... one of my top 25 of all time. Not forgetting Eric Idle who's recently had much success with his broadway show Spamalot.
EDIT- oh, yeah... can't forget "A Fish Called Wanda" with both Cleese and Palin.. hilarious.
I expect Cleese would be the most popular favourite (mine too). But I also like Eric Idle with his song/lyrics and, absurdly, his voice overs for a computer game called Discworld ! I always look forward to a new Terry Gilliam film who in my opinion is the king of dark fantasys and surrealsm (Time bandits being my favourite). But I was dissapointed with his Brothers Grimm so his crown maybe threatened by Guillermo del Toro's brilliantly dark Pans Labrythn. I hope Gilliam is back in form with his latest film Tideland which I havent seen yet.
John Cleese for me, but mainly for Fawlty Towers.
I've only seen one MP movie and that was The Holy Grail, which was hilarious.
I have seen certain sketches from the Flying Circus but not enough to say what I think of the rest off the team.
Happen to be watching Raging Bull...again...for like the tenth time.....:D
It's a great flick if you haven't seen it and like sports-themed films....
1 of the great flicks of all time was on yesterday morning. "Cry Freedom" with Kevin Kline and Denzel Washington. The story of Steve Biko, directed by Richard Attenborough. Basically anything he does is an epic that is a "must-see" but this particular film should be seen by every human everywhere.
Going to see Spiderman 3 on Wednesday evening. Anyone seen it yet? Like it? Hate it?
I'll have to gnash my teeth (yet again) about Kirsten Dunst...don't like her. I won't let that sway my opinion of the movie though, except for the fact that they've had the bad taste to have her in all three so far.
Funny you should mention Spidey GG, i saw it last friday (Release day) and it was bloody busy, the first showing was sold-out, so i had to wait around for an hour and that meant i got out of the film at about midnight, but anyhoo, it was great IMO, a lot busier and a few huge fight scenes, it was funnier in parts too, and there's a cool twist with venom, i think it was 2 and a half hours, without the ads, so don't buy a big drink or you'll miss bits when you nip out. :D
Liam
Oh good, I'm glad you gave it a good review :) I think we'll buy our tickets online so we'll know if we've made it in in advance.
Thanks for the tip on not getting a large drink :D
If Only they had paid Russell Crowe enough:
300) would've been pretty good.
Not a bad movie if you like that kind of Gladiator thing.
Can't wait for JackAss 7, but this is pretty close for enlivening entertainment.
Don't waste your $$ The Last King of Scotland: my opinion only.

One last thought on movies: If you are ever lucky enough to ever find a copy of
King Of Hearts -> get it Immediately.
Fun with some very thought provoking scenes and themes. Circa 1978.

This film was a touchstone of the late 1960s, when it was seen as an antiwar allegory for a world in which madness seemed to reign. Of course, that would probably be true whenever this movie was shown, wouldn't it? Directed by Philippe de Broca and set during World War I, King of Hearts stars Alan Bates as a Scottish soldier separated from his unit in France. He wanders into a small French village that has been abandoned by its residents in the face of oncoming combat. Instead, the town is populated by the residents of a nearby insane asylum, whose keepers have fled--a fact that escapes the innocent soldier, who assumes these are the regular folks. A film that celebrates the innocence and wisdom of the insane, even as it questions who the real madmen are. --Marshall Fine
Spiderman 3 - really enjoyed it, especially the humor in it. For those that don't like Kirsten Dunst, you'll enjoy a few select parts of it - I SURE DID! HA!
We went on a Wednesday early evening, and I don't think there were but 20 people or so in the theater.
Also recently rented The Departed with Jack Nicholson, Matt Damon, Leonardo DiCaprio, Martin Sheen and Alec Baldwin. Wow...lots of violence, good plot, good movie. Took days to watch that one since the youngest member of the family couldn't be around when that was on.
I happened to catch Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest last night on the movie channels....
As I understand....this was the second in the trilogy....and the third one is in theatres now? I didn't see the first one....and have no intention. Dead Man's Chest was one of the worst movies I have ever seen. It tried to be everything....and ended up being nothing. An extra-long nothing.....
I thought i'd bump this.....i just saw Transformers, and it was awesome! I'm recommend it, the best 2 hours that £6.00 could buy you....great CGI, funny, megan fox, huge robots, explosively huge fights, megan fox. :D
Liam
I have to agree with you, except for the Megan Fox thingy...who the heck is she??? ;)
We went to see it a couple of weeks ago, and I have to admit, it was great.
sorry, that's a bit much for here
Sorry boss, how's this:

I cannot wait to watch Transformers, from what I hear it's amazing.
I've only managed to tick one of the summer films of my list and that was The Simpsons movie, which I found hilarious. Watched it on the first night.
I still haven't seen Die Hard 4.0 yet:( Hopefully I'll be going to see Rush Hour 3 this weekend.
that's worse! It's rated X!Quote:

Reviving this one again, i just saw Norbit on Blu-Ray, and Bourne Ultimatum....Norbit wasn't as good as i expected, partly because Norbit was a bit of a wimp, and pushed around for most of the film, albeit by Terry Crews and Mighty Rasta, and (himself playing) his lovely wife "Rasputia", so it was fair enough, and i was actually surprised how many other big names were in it, unpexpectedly to me anyhoo, Thandie Newton, Cuba Gooding Jr, Eddie Griffin, Clifton Powell, Katt Williams, Marlon Wayans, overall it was a laugh, but not a laugh-a-minute.
Bourne was fun though, action packed to say the least, and the usual trickery and double-crossing, well worth the couple of hours to finish off the trilogy.
Sidenote on Bourne....The C.I.A were using Norton Internet Security on their server....now that is not very intelligent! :D
Liam
Liam858, I guess you mean Bourne Ultimatum. The first 2 indeed kick some serious @ss - glad to hear the 3rd maintains the standard, aim to see it soon. Saw transformers recently with very low expectations mainly becasue the premise sounds so stupid plus I never watched the cartoon. But to my shock I had blast with it from start to finish. The movie is well...BIG. This is what I call a large popcorn consuming big summer blockbuster. There is a hilarious bit where an army officer is trying to get through to technical support on the phone which reflects the standard of most telephone support today due to outsourcing. I think I was the only one laughing at that bit in the audience though. maybe becasue I had lost my job due to outsourcing - so I guess I'm more sensitive!
I also saw Simpsons the movie which was very funny but it dd drag in parts but nevertheless it felt like a vintage simpsons with a little more animation polish.
Anyone seen Spiderman 3? I missed it but loved the first two.
Spiderman 3 is ok....not great...but not bad either....
I forgot to mention two other movies:
Pirates 3 - very very dissapointing. Story was practically all over the place with absolutely no discipline in its narrative and flow. I'm talking Matrix 3 scale of dissapointmet (not as bad though)
Harry Potter 5: Order of the Pheonix. - Superb. best entry yet and funnily enough I thought the book was the weakest of the series. These movies get better and better and having read book 7 - I sure hope they keep up the momentum.
That's Hollywood for ya - they're not the sharpest knives in the drawer out there!:rolleyes:Quote:

Well I don't get out very much, but I recently got to see an indie movie called "2 days in Paris" at the Bytowne Theatre in Ottawa, great movie for anyone who has lived in Paris, and fun for most who haven't. Warning: Some ess ee x u-haul content.

Hadn't had a blast like that for a while.
Reviving this one again...
I just picked up a few animated DVD's (Whaddya want i'm a big kid) i got a few that i've already seen, including The Incredibles, good film, good cast, first saw it at the cinema when it came out, The Wild, again good cast, first saw it on Disney a while back, and got a couple that i missed at the cinema, Hoodwinked, and Meet The Robinsons, which i regret missing at the cinema as it was available to watch in 3-D...will let you know what these two are like when i watch them, probably tomorrow, with large amounts of food and drink. :D
I also bagged a copy of Wild Hogs on Blu-Ray for £18 delivered...pretty good laugh, great cast of bikers, one for the family.
Liam
I was wandering thru the local library recently and a VCR tape caught my eye I haven't seen in 25 + years.
Made in 1966.
The basics of the movie are here.
It's a classic in the definition of true insanity, funny, and the rental price is hard to beat: $0.00 + a library card.
From Wikipedia:
Give it a watch if you have a VCR and an hour and 1/2 to kill this winter: maybe on a snowbound day. ;)Quote:
The film ends with the question of who is more insane, those in the asylum or the soldiers on the battlefield.
Very thought provoking particularly since we seem to be in the same situation war-wise that the USA was in 30 years ago.
No contoversy nor philosophy nor gore.
Leaves the viewer to his/her own personal interpretation.
Entertaining ? ---> :D

(Save your $$ on Into the Wild. How it got 4 stars is way beyond me  )
I planned to, not really my cup of tea actor-wise: Emile Hirsch and Vince Vaughn, not really a fan.Quote:

If you want a good comedy, i can thoroughly recommend I Now Pronounce You Chuck And Larry, it's a little bit like the other Sandler movies, with some of the same cast appearing, along with Rob Schneider too, plus with more from Kevin James side of things from his previous TV shows. I was also pretty amazed by Jessica Biel...:D The story is good, and they manage to pull off a good story with comedy without having to take it too far, they are only in a handful of locations, and with a few main characters too.
