[RESOLVED] How do I access DOS on A7A133?

Little by little...:)

Right now I'm setting at 1907Mhz (1600 stock), with a FSB (memory freq.) of 159mhz...bus speed of 318mhz...cpu/memory ratio of 1:1...same core voltage.

This PC133 ram is rated to run at 133Mhz...correct? And right now it's running at 159Mhz, so I'm wondering just how much more it can go...sure would like to have been able to put the ram on a divider.

The A7A133 is rated for 266 Mhz bus speed...correct? And it is now at 318 Mhz...not sure about it's limit, either.

Overclocking these Socket A's are a lot different from the Athlon 64's...The 64's are easy to o/c....I still can't find any info explaining just how the cpu/memory ratio of 3:4 works...and what it means...I reckon that the ram & cpu can't be separated like the 64's can....oh well...:)

The Bios shows the multi to be x10 but cpu-z shows it to be x12...curious..

I made a graph and have been noting each setting for each step...I have about 30 steps recorded so far and it seems that keeping the ratio at 1:1 and with Bios multi at x10 is working the best. That 3:4 ratio is weird...that's what I don't understand well enough.

It's running real smooth so far....a 300 Mhz increase is not bad at all for this lowly ram..and board...:p

I'll take a few more steps...who knows...:D

I'm curious about that CPU/RAM ratio you refer to. On my KV7, I have the ratios expressed both against a third reference (GPU, I think) such as 5:2:1. Changing the ratio to 6:2:1 allows the CPU to run faster in relation to the RAM, or from the other relativity point it allows the RAM to be retarded a little. Speeding up the CPU/RAM does nothing more than bring the RAM back up to its normal speed. I would think the ratio you're talking about is a 4:3 CPU/RAM instead of a 1:1.

If you've ever worked on tuning an older car engine by setting the timing and idle speed, it's easy to visualize. Retarding the timing and raising the idle keeps the spark at the same absolute time reference, but the piston reaches TDC sooner by comparison.

lgbpop...this board must really be limited...no, wait, let me rephrase that...it is really limited..:p ! I have read thru the manual several times...made sure that I had the dip switches configured for jumper free...poked my nose into every corner of every Bios setting...and this board only has the cpu/memory ratio settings of 1:1...and 3:4. The 3:4 ratio doesn't become available until I choose Bios multi of x12 ( maybe also x11...would have to re-check that to be sure). It would sure help if I could do what your board can do...that would help get more speed without increasing the ram much.

The only other possible thing that might change the Bios options would be to flash to the beta version...but who knows if that would have any other Bios settings available.

I'm up to 1928 Mhz...161FSB...321 bus speed...same voltage.

3(CPU):4(RAM)? That's right, it's DDR. Not that limited, though...not many boards would take that much of an overclock. That's why I like Abit, they're pretty forgiving. That Asus is impressing me.

Check for a updated manual online. And what you are wanting to do is double check the jumper settings which maybe are more liberal than the jumperless.
Very common with that series of mobos. Not all of them, but I know the A7V where. So double check.

Train....you did it again...!! I went back once again to the manual that I had to download in pdf....and this time, I understood about the settings for using regular jumper mode...and sure 'nuff...the first 4 dip switches control ram freq. I can choose different ram freq. settings...So I think this is how the ram can be put on a "divider".

Then the dip switches 6-9 is where I choose which multiplier. I will try x10 first....and then I can try x11 or x12 if I need to.

Dip switch #10 is the cpu ratio on/off switch...I'll choose 'on'.

Okay...I'll shut down...re-set the dip's...and see what choices bios gives me and see how things adjust....wish me luck...

Once you set the jumpers, you can not change things in BIOS so to speak of..

My trick is to read those manuals about 4 times, then read it again. That is about when the instructions fall into place. :(

Train...you are correct...it's an "either/or" selection....:( !! I thought that I could set the ram freq. to a lower number and still be able to up the speeds. Nope...no-can-do.. Oh well, it was worth trying.

Sorry about not posting the link to the manual...I didn't think about you or others would want to look at the manual to see what it said about the dip's...short sighted on my part...:o

I will probably ease back up to about 1900 Mhz and keep it there for a while...see if it runs stable. I still have fan holes to cut...multi-reader/floppy to buy...dvd/cd-r/rw to buy....fan controller to turn down the cpu fan so it's quieter....several more weeks before it's finished.

It's been fun messing with the o/c'ing....I am satisfied with the results...and like lgbpop said....it's still just an XP....but it's like having an old classic vehicle...it's fun to see what you can do to it.

I still have fan holes to cut.

Side panel OK, but anywhere else, strip the case. Cause the metal particles will short everything out.

Buying can be fun too. ;)

It's yesterday's technology, but it's no slouch either. Upgrade to a Barton-cored XP down the road, you'll see a big difference.

I will definitely strip the case before cutting holes...thanks for re-inforcing what I knew would be the safest thing to do. It would be a real waste ( not to mention real stupid) to ruin a good board and other good parts because I was too lazy to dis-assemble the case. I will admit that I thought about just stuffing some t-shirts or something like that into the case to try and keep any metal shavings away from the parts. Not one of my brighter moments!!

Even though it's an older rig, it will be a very nice system for basic use...I have been using this almost exclusively for the past couple of weeks and I'm impressed with how well it runs. Of course, the few upgraded parts is why it's running so well.

Make a good file server! Throw a ATA 100/133 card in it and 4 of them there 750GB hdds and you would be right ready!

lgbpop and Train.....I thought that y'all would like to know that I have the chip at 1945Mhz...FSB at 156...Bus speed at 311. It just completed over 10 hrs. of Prime95 stable...no errors...:) :) :) !! All I had to do was just bump up the Vcore one increment...it started out at 1.585...now it's 1.600. The temp under Prime95 load when I got home a few minutes ago was 42c.:D But the room temp is rather cool right now...about 60 F....idle temp right now is 38c. 10 hrs. of Prime95 also means that the PC133 ram is handling the increase in it's speed just fine.

Train...this has been so much fun that once I get this rig delivered to my daughter, I might start slowly gathering some more components ( will need everything...case...psu..all parts.) and put together a file server.

I will definitely get a KVM switch...sure has been a hassle switching cables back & forth as I've been working on this build....just haven't ordered one yet. I have already looked at some on Newegg...do y'all have any particular ones that you would recommend? About all I can go by are the reviews...so your personal recommendations would be appreciated. I went to the local Radio Shack/computer store recently and they wanted nearly $60.00 for a KVM...I nearly choked!!

Yea...I know, I'm slightly hooked..:p ..it's like the overclocking...once you start, you can't stop...you just gotta find out if you can get just a few more Mhz's...:D

Thanks...I had looked at the Trendnet's...right now all I need is a two computer switch. The $22.00 one looks good. I had read reviews where the cables were too short so I want to be sure that the cables are long enough to go about two feet or more. Here is one that I liked...
