I see votes in this poll being cast after the election began...no fair! :p :D
fixed ... the poll is now closed!
We won't have election tampering on this forum!
:D :D :D
I see hanging chads....I see hanging chads!!!!!
I want a recount...... :D
Well... thankfully .... there doesn't appear to be any pregnancies.... we have more than enough chads in this world.
:p
Just watching CNN here.....
Dems within 1 seat of taking the House now....down from the 15 or so they needed at the start. Bunch of races not called yet.....
Dems got 3 of the 6 seats they need for Senate control so far....but getting tougher to come by now.
CNN now projects Democrats to take control of the House...........
Helllllooooooooo Nancy.............
:D
Oy!
:D
Just checked FOX news.....they aren't making the call yet.......
I predicted the House goes to the dems and Reps hang on to the senate....we'll see.
However....keep in mind there is a wildcard in the mix now. Joe Lieberman ran and won as an independant, and he has already said he will go along with the dems.....
Interesting..... Daniel Ortega won in Nicaragua. Remember the Contra affair?
Oooh the timing. :D
Edit: Forgot the link.

Its official...
Democrats take the house :(
The Rascals :)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HKJXzIOSapE
As of this writing the House is blue and the Senate is 2 seats from being so..... but those are 2 very close races... too close to call this evening for sure.
And the Democrats are taking many of the Governorships and that does count for something too... It's been a referendum and it seems we are not happy with the Republican party or Bush, go figure! :D
Can they now repeal the Military Commisions Act of 2006?
Depends ... they need to win the Senate and do they want that battle right off the bat... Homework
Gee, I just read the last 6-8 posts and I feel like I have a re-run or re-count of last night----but I used my TV to keep up with the election results last night. Don't people have TV sets anymore ;)
BTW, how can the "poll" be closed already CB, you haven't counted my absentee ballot
buf, i think Maxx had the poll set to close after x amount of days, and as the votes were counted today, this poll has closed too, it can be re-opened by a mod (i think).
Liam
Sorry Liam, I was only joking since I knew my post would cause some "laughter" from some folks. I think I was the 17th voter to vote but since there isn't a paper ballot to verify that, who can question me!?! OUR poll was fair and square.
Ah, ok, it was the smilie that confused me. :)
I have to admit, being on this side of the pond, all i could do was watch this thread, i can't say i follow politics generally, let alone foreign politics, and don't understand the american system. Anyhoo i just saw this and thought of this thread:
https://discussions.virtualdr.com/im...2006/11/59.jpg
:D
Liam
Not a problem Liam and I love your STOP sign. He is being stopped and now perhaps progress will hopefully resume; after at least a 12 year absence. And yes there are those that disagree. And one other item; I may not totally understand our system of government but I do know right from wrong and my conscience weights heavily on my actions in life.
No...I didn't have anything set for poll ending dates.....
I was confused just getting the poll thread started and didn't add any frills. I am used to the poll setup in IPB....and Vbulletin throws me occasionally. :D
As I mentioned....I voted democrat this election to purge my own party of some elements I didn't like....mainly the extreme right as I am a moderate republican...
However....democrats shouldn't get too excited....even if they grab the senate too. Take for example what happens in the House now. Dems get to build the committees and chair them....but guess what? House chairs are generally awarded based on seniority. That means that many extreme elements of the democratic party (ultra-liberals) will once again be in the spotlight after having been burried by the Democratic party leadership as the country started to lean to the right in the mid to late 90's.
This means that the Dems may be facing a similar problem with keeping fringe elements under control....and could easily find themselves facing the same backlash in two years. The names you are seeing now...Pelosi, Waxman, Rangle are heavy liberals and will likely take this election as a mandate to push agendas that may be more extreme than America is ready for. Also....many of the ultra-liberals will want to have investigations, hearings, etc. to investigate Bush. If the American people see either a witch hunt or a vindictive attempt by Dems to get revenge....they will guarantee the White House goes to the Reps again in two years. Any investigations will need to be precise and quick....not constantly growing monsters similar to what happened with Kenneth Starr and the Clinton stuff.
The Dems ran a good campaign....but they ran on the premise of being anti-republican rather than pro-democrat. It was effective, but it doesn't have the stamina after the fact that a pro campaign would have had. "Throw the bums out" campaigns back-fire all the time.....especially if the old bums are just replaced with new ones.
The old saying...be careful what you wish for............applies. The Dems need to be very careful....their mandate may not be as sweeping as they think. The voters are expecting results....not months of investigations or retribution....and "throw the bums out" voters tend to be impatient.
Anyway....that's my political wrap-up commentary...... :D
Israeli commentators seem to be worried about the Democrats. They worry that the Democrats won't do anything about the Iranian Suicide Nuclear Bomb. They worry that the US won't get into another war in the Mid East. And if they won't, we may all one day go KABOOM!
Maxx, you made some good points there. That's what I hated about this campaign season. I can say that I really could not clearly determine the political platform of just about every candidate...on both sides. They were so bent on lashing out at their opponents that they didn't make their own politics clear. When the mud finally clears, I've got a sneaky suspicion that a majority of these people who gained office (because the people wanted "change") are going to be a great disappointment.
You make some good points Maxx. I'd add that many Republicans got lost in a way--they wanted approval so badly from the media and avoided criticism so much that they forgot what got them to Washington. Those Republicans who stuck to their principles either won, or lost in very close races for the most part; the "lost lambs" got whacked. The few Rockefeller Republicans left fared very poorly. My brother in Woonsocket RI told me last week that if he was going to get Democratic results he might as well vote for the Democrat (he was highly put off by Mr. Chafee and voted for Mr. Whitehouse). I couldn't blame him.
One thing bothers me: the Democrats were so successful just by being "not Republican" that they didn't have to make many promises and uttered generalities for the most part. They don't have too much in the way of expectations to live up to, or live down as a result. Ms. Pelosi (and possibly Mr. Reid also) will have their hands full keeping tight rein on their memberships.
Is it too early to coin a new phrase.............?
"Crazy Pelosi".................... :D
Sorry....I couldn't resist...... :p
I like mine better: Bela Pelosi. :D
Maybe.............. :D

ROTFL I wasn't thinking of a resemblance, just the mannerisms and the demeanor. That's great!
SOUNDS LIKE CONCILIATORY ACCEPTANCES OF WHAT HAPPENED TO THE REPS TO ME.
I RATHER SUSPECT, AS SHOULD YOU AND OTHERS, THAT CHANGE WAS NEEDED AND WANTED BY ALL PEOPLE WITHOUT REGARD TO PARTY AFFILIATION.
Any investigations will need to be precise and quick....not constantly growing monsters similar to what happened with Kenneth Starr and the Clinton stuff.
THERE AREN'T ANY SHORT LIVED INVESTIGATIONS BY EITHER PARTY. I BELIEVE AN INVESTIGATION "HERE" AND "THERE" NEEDS TO BE HAD BUT ONLY AFTER THE MORE URGENT ISSUES ARE ADDRESSED AND HOPEFULLY RESOLVED. DON'T FORGET IT WAS THE REPS WHO CALLED FOR THE STARR AND CLINTON INVESTIGATIONS!!!!
SOME POSTS ARE BEGINNING TO INDICATE A LOSER'S ATTITUDE WHERE THE WINNERS SHOULD BE CONGRATULATED AND NOW SUPPORTED BY ALL IN BOTH HOUSES.
SOME OF THESE WORDS WERE SPOKEN BY BUSH IN NOV 04 AFTER PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS WERE OVER; WORDS THAT HAVE SINCE SHOWN THE ACTIONS OF BUSH IN ALL OF HIS 6 YEARS IN THE WHITE HOUSE AND NOT JUST SINCE 04: (just further showed his arrogance and being hard headed):
I earned capital in the campaign, political capital, and now I intend to spend it," Bush said.
I'll reach out to everyone who shares our goals," said Bush, who 24 hours earlier had promised to try to win over those who voted for his Democratic opponent.
Bush has also said: "When you win, there is a feeling that the people have spoken and embraced your point of view, and that's what I intend to tell the Congress.
TRY TO REMEMBER THE SHORT PARA JUST ABOVE!!
BTW, I have used caps just for emphasis ONLY. No yelling.
usil, are you sure there aren't some Republicans in your government ;)
I can hear a drum roll as Rummy slithers away......

You may recall I am one of the people that voted on the side of the winning party in this case, so I don't see where the "loser's attitude" thing is coming from.... ;)
However....think again if you feel I should give Dem leaders a pass after all the garbage I took for the past 6 years or so. I had people blaming rainy days on Republicans (and me for being one) and heard every anti-Bush or anti-Republican joke that they could muster. Am I going to have some fun at Democratic leaders expense now that they also hold power?
Well......ummm....hell yeah!.
When it comes to political humor....I took it, so I plan to dish it out too. I don't see anything wrong or unfair about that.
It's called being gracious. We're not sore losers.Quote:

Your suspicion is mistaken, I'm afraid; the elections are done but by no means was change wanted or needed by "all people." Not the kind of changes that are in store for us, at least. My taxes will go up 15-20% like they did in the Clinton years--so much for saving some money for my retirement. :( We'll boldly retreat from confronting an enemy sworn to destroy us as well. This used to be the haven for individualists, where anyone could succeed with enough hard work and perseverence; it's slowly becoming a smothering nanny state where someone's always got their hand in my pocket once I earn anything just to give it away to others. Equality of opportunity is giving way to enforced equality; all diversity is welcomed unless it's diversity of thought.
You call that progress? Toward what?
To get back to the original posting in this thread.....lets see how we did as forum on our guesses.... ;)
Republicans keep both the House and the Senate ..........3
Democrats take both the House and the Senate ............11
Republicans lose the House but keep the Senate ............6
Republicans lose the Senate but keep the House ............0
I have the second choice in bold for two reasons....one it is the highest vote getter....and also based on most if not all the things I have seen regarding the last senate race in Virginia...the likely the result overall. The democrat will likely win even if there is recount.
So....as a forum....we did pretty good in our predictions. However....I have a federal judge looking into a few of those late votes in that choice category that came in after the polls closed last night. ;) :p
BTW....it should be noted that the Dems do not have a true "majority" in the Senate even with Virginia. There are two independants in the Senate that are included with the Dems since they have proclaimed they will "caucus" with the Democrats (sound dirty doesn't it)...but at any point, these independants can balk and there goes the majority. Joe Lieberman (who I like) is sitting pretty right now. The Dems abandoned him and tried to pull essentially a political assassination of his carreer....but he fought back and won. He holds alot of power now as a swing voter in the Senate...and my guess is that he will be looking for a few of the dems leadership and requesting a butt-kissing...in exchange for his support....LOL :D
According to exit poll data....more Republicans voted for Joe than Democrats.....
Joe isn't likely to forget that fact.....so watch for surprises..... ;)
Maxx, this was part of your post numbered 38:
I've been a life-long Republican....but I always split my ticket in general elections. Never voted straight party in my life. This year's split favored democrats....
Not because I have changed any of my core beliefs...but rather I want to send a few elements of my party packing since I think they are hurting it for the long run. In short....I look at it as using democrats to do some housekeeping in my party.
My take on the above:
I have to remark that you have a weird sense of loyalty--to either party! Terrible reason to vote in my opinion. But you are entitled to cast your vote. Independent registration may be in order!!
And continuing on in the same post #38 you posted this:
However....and I am serious about this.....is there something psychologically wrong with Nancy Pelosi? I watched some of her performances during the Katrina aftermath...and she seemed somewhat unbalanced. It remined me of seeing someone on medication that was late on the dosage....because later on she would be lucid and calm.
You read the Rush Limbaugh take on Michael J Fox--- well, didn't you?
Well, Ms. Claire McCaskill won MO. :D
Actually...............no.....Quote:
You read the Rush Limbaugh take on Michael J Fox--- well, didn't you?
I have no use for Rush Limbaugh whatsoever....but I'm not surprised that you would assume that every republican does. I know the story as it was reported....and I like Michael J.Fox. I have no problem with him doing ads for McCaskill. Further...I support stem cell reasearch...
Loyalty to a party? Do you agree with and support everything your party does? If not...what does that say of your loyalty? And if you do....what does that say about your beliefs (are they your beliefs or someone else's)?Quote:
I have to remark that you have a weird sense of loyalty--to either party!
No offense buf....but your political position seems archaic to me. You are a political dinosaur by my way of looking at American politics. The party with which I am affiliated was heading in the wrong direction IMO. I felt that it needed a wake-up call and to that end voted the way I did. I would hope that when the democratic party steps off the curb....democrats will have the courage to put away party loyalty and and strive to make a change in the same manner.
I also voted for the one and only Green party candidate that was running in my area. (Congress as I recall)......
I also voted yes on a referendum to create a Veteran's Fund here in PA for men and women who served in the Gulf war. It would supplement their federal bennies....
I put a great deal of thought into my vote....and it doesn't belong to any party. It's mine.... ;)
Having gotten all serious here...I also point that I am joker and I will be making fun of politicians from all sides. You will just have to deal with that....LOL :D
If this thread becomes personal it will be closed. Keep that in mind.
Debating the issues is fine ... not the individuals opinion of said issues.
Alright.....OK....alright.......................... :D
I've gone off course...................mayday, mayday, mayday.....
I'll say this, buf....you have me regretting my vote already.....LOL :D ;)
We have been found out---guess we better cool it
I think that "warning" applies to everyone.
Well, I don't 'think' I can get into any trouble when I report that Rush Limbaugh reminds me of the cheese that smells like, like I don't know what. I have no use for the person behind the voice; I do not listen to him but I think that was reported on TV.
Well, since I was one of those (I assume I was one) who got a head--er hand slapped, I don't get any mail anymore :) I gotta find a thread to start so I can 'talk' to someone----again :D
