Richmond...Charlottesville...beautiful country...I miss it. But these foothills of the Ozarks reminds me a lot of that area. I work in Batesville, which was built along the White River...just like Richmond, but considerably smaller ( about 12,000 population).
Many folks around here have vegetable gardens....lots of people sell produce out of the back of their trucks. I need to start buying fresh stuff from them....maybe this thread will inspire me to do that....
Hate to get out of the food go-round,but one of the nastiest things quality wise on the market today imho are automobiles. All these safety ratings and crash tests you hear about and see on TV car ads are crap! Don't believe that? Ask a cop or tow truck driver who deals with 'real life' accidents day after day.
The main reason I keep my ol' faithful '72 Ford F-250 Camper Special Pick m' up truck. Now 'that' vehicle is made wholly from real heavy gauge steel with no plastic/fibreglass in the body construction at all. No, it doesn't get the highest gas mileage, but even with todays prices safety vs. gas mileage? I'll live with it.
Bought him back in '92 and completely re-built the power train, brakes and all myself. Runs like a top and is completely trustworthy. And now, he's become a classic. Could care less about staying ahead of the "Jones" family. You know,,the ones who buy a new car and throw it back to the dealer every year or two cause they just "have" to have the 'newest'? Or they get clobbered on the interstate and 'total' the car(and very likely members of the family too)
Of course the Auto Mfg's could care less!
End of rant(for this time)
What about those great 5mph bumpers...what a joke!! What vehicle is ONLY doing 5mph when it hits something or it gets hit!!
My Dad is from around Charlottesville area - Alberene. Beautiful around there, love the mountains and streams. Same friend that lived in Richmond, bought 80 acres near there. Log cabin, pond. One day...just one day - guess I'll have to win the lottery first - errr, maybe I should start playing it. :o
Truck farmers - yeah, you can get some really good produce from them. REAL tomatoes, fresh corn, and soon, collards! (I'm already imagining how many people are making the "yuck" face over that!)
Our third vehicle is an old '78 Ford pick up. It's a bit rough (and that's being polite) but it's easy to work on, and tough. Sure does need some cosmetic work...but it runs. In fact, pretty good. Doesn't have A/C though, which sucks. Gas mileage...hmm, it sure can't pass up a gas station.
When I lived right outside of Charlottesville for about a year, I meant to go on over to Schuyler...home of Earl Hamner. I am a huge fan of The Waltons..some people love Little House On The Prairie, but for me...The Waltons.
I used to love the Waltons too ;)
....... good night MaryEllen
Here you go Maxx, some concrete that will last, apparently:
