I got the crashes with only one window opened. Since mine crashes before anything can load enough to give even a glance at what the problem is, I'm not going to be any help, so am giving up working the puzzle.
(By the way, I have the latest Flash player, version 8 something, the one they put out a couple of weeks ago because of some flaw hackers could use).
Well I guess the thing to do is for me to upgrade the flash player i have and see if I start getting crashes. At least then we'll know what is causing it. Nix, can you verify the vers. of Flash you have on the box that doesn't crash FF?
I really hadn't wanted to do that since there were rumors of Adopey packaging spyware with the player, once they took over MM, which they've just done
I know I just did a clean install of Win2000 after I converted the partition from FAT32 to NTFS and was left with the 512kb cluster size.
I can't remember if I updated flash or if it is the version that gets installed with Win2000 Pro.
How do I check what version of flash is installed ?

I forgot I still had the Flash download in a folder. It's version 8.0.22.0
Funny how they're so ashamed of Flash that it's not in Add/Remove. Can't say I blame them. :D
EDIT; Yeah, Nix, I have the flashblock extension and adblock extension as well. I don't have any problems unless I disable them both.

Just an idea ... Try adding:127.0.0.1 ds.serving-sys.comto your HOSTS file.
Unfortunately at work the hosts file on my workstation does not seem to have any effect on the internet as I believe it would need to be the hosts file on the proxy server or something.
At home in WinMe I don't get the issue as I have some entries in my hosts file that seem to be blocking the ads and my Win2000 doesn't seem to have the problem - although I broke it last night by uopdating a driver for my Promise Ultra 100 card :(

As I said it works in Win2000 but that is usign the default version of Flash.

And now the quite a lot of ads are no longer displayed.
The only thing that I can't get rid of is the Jupiter media family of technology forums drop down lists on the right side of the page but I think it's code into the page and not an ad.
Now its started happening in WinMe at home so I've installed the Adblock extension and blocked ad.doubleclick.net to resolve the issue.
Would 1 or 2 of you experiencing this problem be willing to go here and download an older version of the Flash player to see if it makes a difference with this issue? You can always upgrade it again right after the experiment, if it has no affect. Thanks
I got a crash with 7 as well.
Flash is malware, in my opinion.
Regarding the 'wierd color shift'
I think the page color loads as black first, then changes very quickly to white. I took a look at the (neatly organized but sloppily coded) xhtml and I think it's because it's missing a <body> tag. Of course, with 226 other validation errors on this page, that might not be it.
That's what happens when you let a machine do your coding! :)
Hmm, does the crash ever occur anywhere besides the posts level? I mean the page like this where you view posts?
Fixed the no body tag issue at the thread level. Somehow I don't expect that will fix the issue, but ya never know
I've had a crash on every page, even the Preview Reply page. Had to retype a reply. It's definitely due to a Crash ad.
As for the color shift, I think it has something to do with the links that change color to red when you hover the mouse over it. While waiting for the page to load, you can hover the pointer over those lines mentioned in the image posted, and they'll sometimes turn red.
Concerning the coding errors, the way the page(s) jump around until it finally loads, it's a wonder this site displays at all.

Lastnight at home it was everytime I went to the PM page.
As mentioned in my last post (#50), installing Adblock and blocking ad.doubleclick.net is a workaround that solves the problem for me.
So maybe you can concentrate on the flash ads that come from that site, although I guess that could be many and random.

No, nothing's changed. Came directly to this thread, (it's bookmarked), waited for page 1 to load, then page 2 , then clicked on the Index link, and that's as far as it would go. There was another blank space where a Crash ad was trying to load.

One of the mainstays of posts concerning FF on sites like VDr is the issue of RAM usage and CPU spikes, no matter the version.
Reading the response from that moron, I'm not surprised in the least over the zombie culture at the MoZzine forums. It's always user error or the fault of the OS or your computer, blah blah. If you dare to confront the adolescent know-it-all cheerleaders, their "mods" will obliterate your comments.
It took them almost a year to fix a major bug where when you uninstalled FF, it took out the whole Program Files folder for many.
They're still having issues with losing bookmarks, but of course changing the Options box took first priority. :rolleyes:
I liked FF at first, (started with 0.8), but didn't know any better at the time. I only use FF because of the adblocker and Crashblocker. I no longer recommend Mozilla to just anyone, and especially won't mention their 'help" forum. I personally don't think they really know what they're doing, and there's too many hands stirring the soup. They are not ready for Prime Time, and likely will never be, considering the mindless remarks of Schroepfer.
I knew once an "open source" program came into popularity that things like this would be exposed. People love to bash MS and all that occasionally goes wrong with their programs, but they discount the TREMENDOUSLY wide usage of these programs, worldwide. Now look, an open source program has gained just a fraction of that level of popularity, and the problems, bugs, and vulnerabilities are starting to flood out.
Bottom line is, all programs are flawed and all have vulnerabilities, but you NEVER know how many there are until you reach a certain level of users. That's the only reliable way to expose such issues.
To me it's so ironic that the Mozilla response sounds like it came fresh out of a Redmond can. :)
It's human nature to go after the "big guys", but as the competition begins to even approach the same level of popularity, the apparent differences will begin to shrink.
When I first hit this issue I posted on the Mozillazine forums and someone eventually came back and asked me if I had talkback installed.
I didn't and asked if there was some way of installing post existing installation, but they never came back to me.
You should be able to find previous versions. I can't believe they don't have em archived somewhere for DL.

Keep in mind that it's going to get tougher as time goes on to find extensions and themes for each version, and SpywareBlaster doesn't recognize some older versions either (including 0.8, which was my favorite).

I was a diehard user and promoter of FF until 1.5 came out. The beta version of 1.5 worked better than the final. I went back to a previous version and had the same problems-WTF!
Am now using the free version of Opera with no problems and it's faster than FF. Even got it skinned to my liking :)

No, talkback is the thing that pops up immediately after Firefox crashes. It's like Microsoft's Windows Error Reporting, except it sends stuff to Mozilla instead of Microsoft.Quote:

Well today i have had a few crashes and also a few freezes where I have had to kill Fx through task manager.

Bit of a disapppointment that instead of fixing the obviously faulty Flash ads that are causing the issue someone has made a decsion to change the place they are hosted from so that we cannot block them. :confused:
There's an opportunity here. Given they're now on a JupiterMedia server, I'd hope that Joe can get direct links to all the Flash ads from someone. All we need are a bunch of static pages, each with one of those ads linked to from it, and we can poke them one by one until we know which pages crash.Quote:

FWIW....after all this time with no crashes I've encountered 3 in 24 hours...all while trying to post to a thread....on XP Pro.... :(
