Could this one be more to your optical nerves, you might even visit the small room..
I like the minimalist idea myself, but gotta have a few up there.........How long does it take to boot up those billboard desktops, anyway? :D
You know Igbpop, some of us don't like to have to download a photo to see it. Could you perhaps post that as a screenshot .jpg?
have to help me there, PL, I'm not too up on doing the visual stuff. that's different from using "print screen?"
Nope, same as, but paste it into an image editor instead of Word. You can use Paint if you don't have any other image editor, or download and use www.irfanview.com irfanview is a good free image editor, one that is used by a lot of us techs here.
Here Is my'n
Thx PL.....let's try it now......
this should do it...
Yep, Igbpop, that's much better. And a nice photo too. Did you shoot that one?
:o Actually, no. It's one of the sample pics in XP's Documents\My Photos folder! Cameras have never been my strong suit lol....still trying to figure out why that big sliding cover is over the viewfinder. When I open it and click the shutter, I always get the same blurry image. I'll stick to looking at my son's photos.
Using LiteStep 0.24 instead of Explorer for my shell.
The small windows with screensaver images in them are actually animated screensavers. The large "console window" uses BGInfo for the information (which I had to blot some out), and console.dll so I can use a section of that window to type commands like a Run box. Handy.
The sidebar "wharf" lets me run programs from popout menus, which requires hand-editing of the step.rc, but when the configuration is done, it's worth it.
The "root" box lets me run cmd.exe as local Admin (after issuing the password); the box below that one opens a cmd.exe window in the context of my normal login (non-Admin for security. No browser hijacks/spyware here!)
The theme is a heavily modified "Fallout" theme originally done by "Tin Omen" (www.desktopian.org).
That's quite a cool fully modded custom desktop :D i like., the second bracket in that link needs editing out or it will not load up, ;)

Nice topic. We all get to show off our pride & joy. ;)
I'm always changing mine, but I like the Zippo theme the best. So many themes, so little time.
SpyCop, Spy Sweeper, Spyware Blaster, Spybot S&D, Ad-Aware SE..... sounds like overkill :) Clean up that desktop!
... My latest Desktop incarnation ... The other monitor is busy at the moment with other things.
My wife found this neat travel brochure (c. 1915) so I tried scanning it to wallpaper. Think it's growing on me...
There be dragons.
classic resource saver
I've always wondered what solid colored background uses the least amount of energy to produce?
Any ideas? Or would the difference be negligible?
Using no background image would save the most resource. Up until very recently I didn't use a bg on my work pc because it couldn't spare any resource use that wasn't crucial.
its stored as a uncompressed BMP, so it doesn't matter if its solid color or anything..Quote:

Then what about solid black vs solid white? A completely white screen can produce enough ambient light to partly illuminate a small room but black illuminates nothing. Would energy needed still be the same? Is the black screens energy dissipated in other ways? heat?
I think if it has to load an image, it uses resource, regardless of the image.
oh.., I took your meaning of energy wrong.., I thought you meant resources.., not actual energy.., sorry bout that..
I don't know enough about CRT's to tell you how that works..
Yes so did I. Ya mean that's not what he meant?
no, he means wattage.., like the actual power usage

Black. The guns are off when "drawing" black.
White would use the most.
Probably somewhat negligible anyway, though...
Oh, ok in that event yeah, the black would use the least actual ac.
It was just an academic question. I'd been curious about it for a long time and had asked around before but never got an answer.
thanks.
Too much time on my hands!
It would seem that a black screen would not need to energize pixels, but then again: you don't need anything to have nothing, but to project an image of nothing you need something, don't you? Like a painting needs black paint for an image of nothing?
My brain hurts...
Turn your monitor off and unplug it... the screen is black and it's not even using any power. There's your "black paint" itself-- the darkness of the glass.Quote:

To quote Nigel Tufnel: "How much more black could this be? None... None more black."
Just gonna give this thread a large bump!

I've gotten into simplicity the last few months. Here's the XP desktop on my home-built.
