I wish there were an application that was kinda like webEX only much less expensive. There are plenty of free VNC viewers out there, but none of them are as easy as having someone logging into a website that allows us to remote control their pc.
I've come across several programs, but all of them need to be installed and configured on our clients end (actually called the server because we will be remoting into them). I've looked into GoToAssist.com, they provide what we need to an extent, but surely there is another app out there that is not as costly.
Remote assistance works great, but not all of our clients are using XP.
Any suggestions?
while i was forwarding some email, i thought of some other programs i'd like to have.
first, i'm a very private person and want to apply the same courtesy that i'd like others to do to me (even if they don't).
i usually forward various email messages & jokes to about 10 other people...when i do, i ALWAYS delete the originators info..such as their addy and the names of other people that they had sent the message to, in addition to me...this can take some time as some messages have been forwarded 3-4 times before i get them....and of course, i only send the message to one person at a time because i don't want to show all the peoples names/ids that i'm going to be sending the message to.
so, i need two different programs:
1) to always delete the trail of the message...only sending the actual message and another
2) which will allow me to send messages to many people BUT not show to anyone the list of anyone else who are also going to get the message.
The first one is easiest. Just hold your shift key, and click before the first word, then take your mouse and scroll to the end of the message, then click on the last letter of the last word. This highlights everything and then you can just hit the delete key.
To send messages to others so that only one person sees their name in the sent to box, click on Cc (Carbon copy) then you'll see BCc, Blind Carbon copy, you can add others emails and when the first person gets the email they won't see the other peoples names. See attachment.
I wish there was a simple database I could understand how to program. I wish Access 2003 was not written for rocket scientists.
At the risk of sounding sarcastic, Databases don't get much easier than Access. The core of every database out their is the Tables where all the records are stored. Learning good table design is the key to a good Database. Try going to Element K and subscribing to their journals, they're worth every dime spent.Quote:

But it had lots of features to control running of programs, opening and closing windows, etc.. On a modern powerful PC, we probably finally have enough processing power to adequately run such a solution. I'll look tonight and let you know... of course, even if I'm right, who KNOWS what M$ might be charging for the product if it still exists... :(
The only reference I'm finding online for this item now points to "Microsoft Voice Command for Mobile Devices"... Maybe they abandoned the desktop version for lack of interest?
You know, this has actually been a thorn in my side for a long, LONG time. I'm a system analyst and programmer by profession, and have built private and commercial applications since 1981. Now, I'm not vain enough to claim that I can write a better version of an OS than M$, although I do look at Linux source code quite alot, and I KNOW that MOST error messages come from the OS level, not the application level... BUT: Every application that I have EVER written, that has error handling, reports these errors in a simple, English language, understandable manner.Quote:

My company ceased doing business with Symantec a few years ago when they were marketing PC-Anywhere. We had purchased multiple licenses, and were using it for remote assistance with our customers. When something would go wrong, we would get these useless error codes. I called and talked to the individual who (I was told) actually wrote the code for the error routines, and that individual was ultimately unable to decipher his own code!!! What a maroon!!!
So, I cast a big hearty "YOU BETCHA" for this program, and would pay good money if it worked!
I wanted a small utility that would add common headers and footers to HTML files.
Update the footer, run the program, all the files are changed.
Could I find one? Of course not. So I wrote it. :)
The weird thing is this doesnt seem hard at all. Is it not as simple as a database of the errors deciphered in english that is accessed when an error occurs,,, crossrefrence the crap they give and return an english version??
Sounds to me the hardest part is going to be research based (finding the truth about the errors and what they mean).
I figure I could write this fairly easily but honestly I dont have the time to do the research for what will ultimately be a free program...
Hi ThrillKiller,
I agree with the you. The research is the real time-consuming effort. This would be true, if every error code had only one possible cause but as we both know, there are lots of errors that can have multiple causes or they are the result of a particular sequence of events.
And it just gets lots more complicated from there but I agree with you that this is something that is needed. I have even made the suggestion several times to Microsoft.
Cheers,
Linda
I used quick reply, does it matter if I use "it" instead of post?
I wish there were a program that would fix my computer auto style!
There is a program out there that will do just that in a way, It's hasn't gone public yet and I don't know when it will. I see this on a computer sales show at ShopNBC they have a piece of software that finds the problem and walks you through stages to solve it. I got the name of it and found the site if you care to visit, but you can't buy It, or not that I can tell. (http://digitallifeline.com/dll/)
There was previous post that wanted a program that shows what is running and I realize there are many but I like this one called Autorun- ( www.sysinternals.com ) You can highlight an item and have it take you to where it is located at the registry or it will Google it, that saves a lot of time. On that same site they have more free programs like one I noticed ( rootkitrevealer scans a system's Registry and file systems using sophisticated techniques to look for clues that indicate the presence of rootkits.
Help!
I wish that there were a program where I could input 3 columns from a spreadsheet. The three columns would be First Name, Last Name, Email Address.
The purpose of the program would be to validate each email address and produce a report (list) of all of the entries that failed the email validation test.
SBC Communications is my ISP. I tried to send an email message with 205 email addresses. But I kept getting two error messages, which was that an email address was bad. The second message was that I had too many email addresses on my email message.
When I got an error message that one of my email addresses was not valid, I knew that something else was afoot.
Apparently, SBC will not allow an email message to be sent unless all of the email addresses are valid.
Cheers,
Linda
:(
My brother who is with AOL tried to send an email to a large number of people and AOL locked his account because they thought it had been hijacked and was being used for Spamming others.Quote:

Or maybe you’re running an internet café. Plenty of programs out there but NONE that can be truly personalised to the needs of an individual café. The few that can are priced way beyond the means of those little café owners.
A program like the one I’m talking about would put the little guy programmers out of work….. Bummer…. Something for the programmer that develops it to think about. He or she would become VERY RICH INDEED!!!!
Work on it, people. But like Office. Have the “Pro” at a ridiculously expensive price. Have the “Academic/aka poorest of the poor” reasonably priced.
So I can afford it!!!
Cheers guys

CRBell, GoToAssist isn't too bad price-wise, and has been an invaluable tool for our support desk. We used PC Anywhere a couple of years ago as a standard, but found GTA cheaper to implement because the per-user licensing was only for the support staff, whereas PCA required licensing fees on both the end use and the support staff. Those fees had to be repaided with each new PC/OS since the PCA versions we'd use on a Win 98 machine wouldn't be compatible with XP and so forth. And GTA gave us a volume discount.Quote:

Session logging and comments fields have also helped the company in ways such as quality assurance and corporate security.
I would like an Email Subject Renaming program. People send me important, useful tools or information via email, and the subject reads stuff like "Here you go" or just "Fwd:" and does not describe what that email contains very well. When I shuffle it off to a PST, I put it in a logical folder, but the reason it's there is not apparent from the subject line. I'd like to be able to right click the message and rename the subject. Any thoughts? (Outlook 2003)
There is already such a program, it's called TV. Just watch the late news and they usually announce the winning numbers.Quote:

Thanks for your opinion jengersnap!! :)
I think Calpitor wanted the winning Lotto numbers in advance of the actual draw - LOL.
I'm not going to tell where that site is.
The first pertains to Favorites. When I save a bookmark, I would like the ability to document
date favorite saved,
why saved,
referred to website by VDR, John Doe, etc;

Have you tried del.icio.us? that is also it's url. Great program and it allows you to do all those things you suggest. Plus you can access them from any computer. Give it a whirl. since I started using del.icio.us, I have stopped using favorites and bookmarks. they seem cludgy.
I want a program that would stop my wife from breaking the computer every time she uses it.
Short of hiding the keyboard I can't seem to prevent this occurrence happening.
A program that would wipe out that Derbiz and Elitebar thing once and for all.
I wish there was a program that would find this CD-ROM tower on my network.
I have a thread in the networking section.
I wish there were a program to explain exactly what Microsofts error messages mean. And a program by Microsoft to say which application caused the error, not just an application caused a problem. If it knows an application caused it why doesn't it know which one?
I believe I learned of this program -- it closes all active programs -- here. I got a pop-up today telling me that "my 250 day free period is up" and inviting me to buy a renewal. But I lost the pop-up. Can anyone tell me:
- Who makes the program?
- What it costs?
- Are there equivalents that do the same thing you can recommend?
Thanjs. ...wdc
I believe PC Magazine puts out that program. www.pcmag.com
Fuelm@n: Thanks, but I could not find it there. Do you know who sells it now? wdc
wdc maybe this is what you are looking for:

Relative to PC Anywhere, GoToAssist is definitely more affordable for a full time support person. However there are more affordable solutions. LogMeIn Rescue and Network Streaming are about 1/3 the price and in many ways better than GoToAssist.

Everytime that I have to use a user name and password to log onto a website, I say save it to my computer. Is there a program available, which can pull all of this information into a file, where I can save this information. Information would include URL, user name, password, date created, date last accessed.
The program would need to have a user interface, so that I could review the information and then put into a password manager, which was encrypted, etc.

This probably does exist, but I'm unaware of it if anyone feels like sharing.
I would like a very simple utility to show my start up items, running processes, and be able to edit which one's are running when, and to disable some of the junk that slows my boot, etc.
Mine isn't overwhelming at this point, but I'd prefer to take an easier route than reading 100's of articles on Micro$oft's site.
A really nice feature would be to tell what the heck some of the are: without googling all of em.
A classic example (on my desktop) would be Intel PROset II.
It might (?) be of use to advanced users. Me ?: not in that category.
I'm scared to remove it though.
Spyware/adaware/worm/trojan/virus free (pretty sure) due to the things I learned here. ;)
If someone knows of something, please post a reply?
Thanks!
Windows XP Home w/SP-2
Intel P-4 @ 3.06
IE 6.0
So many programs, I don't know if it's necessary to include most of them.
I use this one. Don't know if this is what you're looking for, but you can delete or disable start ups. http://www.sysinternals.com/utilities/autoruns.html
I would love a program that could anticipate hard drive failure! We have had two or three mechanical failures within the past couple of years. I love backups but why not let me ghost a copy before it craps out?
Nice thread... Great idea!
a program that would tell you witch programs in your CPU are conflicting
