What happens if you don't give away all your gmail invites?
Set up an account.
Send yourself a whole bunch of invitations.
Follow the links to create accounts with different ids eg one for each family member.
Forward the first account to the second, the second to the third, the third to the fourth etc.
Use the first one for email from things like VDr, eBay etc etc so it will get plenty of usage.
Copies are forwarded on to second then third then fourth etc etc.
After a fwe days you will recieve 50 invites for each account ???
Don't know this for sure as I have only set up my two boys and my wife's accounts today.
The forwarding works, will tell you if it the 50 free invites works.
they just SIT there on your inbox page, lolQuote:

One I had used to send stuff now has 50 invites whereas the other 2 that had just received stuff, do not.
I used the other 2 to send some emails, will now wait to see if they both get 50 invites.
I now have 88 invites if anyone wants one (or more), just pm me your email address.
makes a great storage bin,lol.Quote:

set up a label [folder] with these or similar names.
set up a filter to move those e-mails to matching folders
now, when you you need to reference something, open your file cabinet.
Hey there the count on my orignal gmail account has reset to 50 invites.
So now with the two accounts I have and my two sons I have 200 invites.
And that has just taken me about 4 days all up to acumulate that many.
I had sent out 12 invites and 6 of those resulted in new accounts, so may that's why they reset my count back to 50 ??
i'd think so,lolQuote:

I hadn't even used my account or checked on it til yesterday. I have 50 invites as well.
I think they expire after a certain amount of time, don't they?
I think you have to use it every 90 days or they'll kill it.
I have 200 invites across 4 accounts and every I know who wants an account has one.
Ye i have like 450 invites lol and every1 i kno has several accounts as well lol so if ne1 wats sum invites let me kno (lol doubt theres ne1 without an account)

terry
I have 97 left, will use about 20 for friends, so that will leave me about 77 to give away.
You can PM me if you need one.
Shirrell :)
I have 200 across 4 accounts and even when I give them away they just keep coming back.
I wish my bank account worked the same way.
lol, so do I
Just wondering what you think of this. I myself do not have a gmail account and have no need for all that storage.
http://www.gmail-is-too-creepy.com/
Do you find gmail creepy?? Have you all read the TOS??
Personally,I don't like the idea that my emails would be scanned, collected and stored for the purpose of marketing a product. Nor do I like the idea that someone is looking over my shoulder reading everything I type. Then there's the issue of gmail scanning messages from a non gmail account to a gmail account. Yea I know, there is no privacy these days and if the government wants to read your e-mail they will regardless of what e-mail program you use....but why make it so easy for them?
Jeepers...Creepers.... Where'd You Get Those Peepers???
Hmmm...very odd...not one comment....Nada...
Marina, check out this previous thread about the same subject:
http://discussions.virtualdr.com/sho...t=gmail+creepy
Me personally, I am not so into conspiracy theories and paranoia. If someone is really interested in reading emails between me and my grandmother, well then, hope he enjoys. If anyone really has a doubt, then either don't use Gmail, or use it only for non-important things. I don't think its worth losing brain cells thinking about it.
IMO, at the end of the day, the positive points greatly outweigh the negative points. I can't live without my Gmail now, and I hope Google comes out with more great free services with the little ads on the side, which I never bothered looking at anyway.
Thanks for the reply Usil....and the links. I should have done a search to see if this had already been discussed. I do not see the need for all that storage though. To me the only reason someone would need all that storage is for sending large files such as .mp3's or movies which I understand is illegal in the US now.

Hi,
Well I aint bashed Yahoo yet.... I use it daily .
Hotmail got my goat cause I left it more than a month once and didn't check email... pardon me for being ill!!!! then they wanted some bucks to re-activate!!!!
Dont get me wrong POPPY4, I like google. And yes our email is probably scanned by national security services, secret police etc. but as far as I know they dont add to the email any adverts for products based on what words are included in the text of the mail.
Phil
Now this is not correct as I have let my hotmail go a number of times and have never had to pay to re-activate it. You have to read carefully as they try to get you to sign up for a paying account when you go to re-activate but you only have to click at the very bottom of the page to re-activate your account....no cost.

This one here I can relate to.... ...do you think that perhaps we Canadians are less willing to give up our privacy than our neighbours down south???

Gmail seems innocuous enough, but there are two things to consider:
First, Google has amassed a huge database of information concerning searches, queries etc. through the use of non-expiring cookies. That has people concerned enough, but now the email service can (and likely will) allow them to now link that "anonymous" data with an actual personal identity. There are users out there that never flush their cookies, and may not realize that google has been tracking their search requests for years.
Second, your emails may be retained indefinitely, even after you delete them. Why? May not seem like a big deal, but down the road do you like the idea of an organization having a catalogue of people you communicate with, discussions you've had, services subscribed to etc.?
I also have a third, but it's more speculative (and maybe a bit paranoid) on my part. ISP's are more or less absolved of responsibility for monitoring the traffic flowing through their networks, providing them a shield of legal indemnity. The catch is that if ISP's start monitoring their networks for some particular type of questionable or illegal content, then they're expected to monitor for everything and are held responsible for the traffic travelling on their networks. This type of protection prevents an organization like the RIAA from going after ISP's for allowing copyrighted material to be transferred among their subscribers.
If a soon-to-be-public organization like google has the technology in place to scan everyone's email for keywords with the right to do so granted by the users via the user agreement, it makes me wonder about the ability of agencies (government or private a la RIAA) to force Google through legal means to scan for questionable content. I'm not sure they'd be protected by the same don't ask-don't tell immunity ISP's have. I'm not a privacy expert or a lawyer, and I am a law abiding citizen (for the most part ) but it still gives me cause for concern.
Anyways, I'm not slagging google, I use their services countless times in a day (although I flush my cookies regularly). I just think that in this day and age of digital technology and privacy issues, people need to be aware that something isn't necessarily what it seems to be.
(stepping of soap box now...)
Just my $0.02...

Telus is my ISP and I can go into my account and set it to delete all spam on the server or have it tagged as spam when it arrives in my mailbox. I never have any spam.

Your welcome.
I've reached 600MB so far and growing every day. I prefer this method cause I never have to delete an email again. Its nice to have such a large archive at the tip of your fingers. But that is not the main reason for liking Gmail. I love their interface and the way they have made use of Labels instead of folders. It takes getting used to, but its a great idea IMO.
By the way, Gmail is not ideal for sending large files, as you can only upload 10MB at a time.
Thanks for the birthday wishes :)
If nobodys mentioned it already I came across an article on GMail drive this week and on testing it seems to work.
BTW You can filter the GMAILFS into archieves to prevent them appearing in the in-box and max file attachment is 10MB.Quote:
GMail Drive is a Shell Namespace Extension that creates a virtual filesystem around your Google Gmail account, allowing you to use Gmail as a storage medium.
GMail Drive creates a virtual filesystem on top of your Google Gmail account and enables you to save and retrieve files stored on your Gmail account directly from inside Windows Explorer. GMail Drive literally adds a new drive to your computer under the My Computer folder, where you can create new folders, copy and drag'n'drop files to
