Norton Anti Virus 2003 No Longer Responding

Wished I'd have seen this thread before. I've already uninstalled my Norton 2003, cleaned the remnants from the registry, and down loaded a free Antivirus to replace it, lol. I couldn't figure out why the live update wasn't taking and then it wouldn't even become enabled. Word 2000 wouldn't open and was pis*ing me off. I did all the usual by scanning for spyware, and online scans for virus and trojans and they all came up clean. Just gave up on Norton. I was due to renew subscription on Jan. 19th anyway so screw-em

On three computers, that had problems before and after the latest updates of Norton, went to:

https://getca.verisign.com/update.html

and installed the certificate. Now things work fine (right click and Word are back to normal).

I E-mailed Symantec two days ago about this issue and received my reply this morning. They have no idea as to what I was talking about. Talking about the runaround!

I followed the link provided by Cowboy622 by downloading and installing the revised or new root certificate and all seems to be working well for now.

My only concern is that I deleted not only the two expired root certificates that expired in January 2004, but two others that expired in 2002. Hope I did not mess up anything.

Everyone has been wonderful in assisting me to resolve my problem. Looks like a vast number of others encountered the same issue.

My hat is off to everyone on this superb forum.

I spent the better half of yesterday scanning computers for the problem of Office slowing. I noticed the NAV not working right and came here to see what was going on.

Thank you to all who continue to contribute and make this board an IT MEGA Store for the latest issues with everthing computer related. Your suggestions worked this time and have worked every other time I have had problems....

I've installed the certificate, and rechecked the "Check for publisher's certificate revocation box" and all is fine again. Thanks Cowboy622 :)

Tools>Internet Options>Advanced and in the Security section uncheck "Check for publishers security revocation"

Now that we all know that Verisign was to blame, and not Norton, will you be sticking with Norton?:D

I still blame Norton, I've found that everything that goes wrong with computers is Nortons fault.

Mind you I like Ghost, but I think they got that from someone else.

I have wanted to get rid of Norton for some time, but I thought there was not a good enough alternative.
It just eats up PCs speed and resources; it wants to control too much all the time and has way too many conflicts.
Only thing is the support for updates is good,,,,,,,slow but good.
And you NEVER completely get it off you pc!
The times I have had to reinstall windows just because NAV would not install
I knew something was not right when I installed Norton anti spam 2004 and it took longer to install than Microsoft office
Plus I got script errors in outlook when I un-installed it they went away
The NIS 2004 was like having a 900 lb gorilla on my back turned my P4 into P3
actually its an Athalon but you know what i mean,
not too mention all the typing for activation

This was a blessing in disguise the last straw I just dumped NIS 2003 and installed F-Secure Anti-Virus Client Security works great and loving it so far

Though Verisign could have handled things much better than they did, and they're certainly partially to blame, they apparently have been warning everyone who would be affected for at least a year. Symantec chose to completely ignore the warnings that this certificate was about to expire, so yes, I certainly still do blame them.

I went through similar problems with Norton back in 2000 and dumped it completely. With the advice from many VDR members, I decided to go with Computer Associate's IPE AV program. It worked very well and had a very small footprint compared to others. It finally went to a 'pay' version(eTrust EZ Antivirus). I had no qualms whatsoever about buying it. As a previous user of IPE, i was able to get it for a us$10.00 subscription. It is now us$29.95, but the yearly fee is just us$9.95. Tell me to 'knock-on-wood' if you like, but running it along with ZA free versions, I haven't been hit with 'any' kind of nasty in 3 years. eTrust sent me my notice yesterday that my subscription will expire the first of Febuary. They even suggest to you,that if you send payment early,to wait 'til the last minute to do the renewel so you get the full benefit time wise. Well,,they have my payment, I have my new key code and all is well with my PC.:)

I have just been on the victims end of this disaster created by Norton and Verisign. I am desperately trying to uncheck the "check for publishers certificate..." box, but it gets stuck and doesn't do anything! How can I get out of this mess?!

OK, I managed to install the new certificate. I get errors that winsock is missing. Gonna try to fix that one now.
