Hmmm... not sure what you're getting at here, but to clarify, each jar contains an unknown number of marbles, and there's no guarentee that any two jars contains the same number of marbles. They're just jars of marbles.
Here's a hint. If all the marbles were 1 gram each and the "bogus" marbles were 2 grams each, you'd use the same solution. Also, if there were just 5 jars, or 20 jars, indeed no matter how many jars you ahd, you'd use the same solution.

If you take a corresponding amount of marbles from each jar that would represent the number of jar it is in the row jars and add the weight will add up to 109 grams or 108 grams or 107 etc.... the total weight of your sample will indicate which jar has the marbles at 1 gram each. I don't believe this is the solution you're looking for but it works. It was this kind of logic that kept me from pursuing an engineering degree. :DQuote:

Multiply the combined weight times 10 and divide that figure by the number of marbles you have, that'll give you the number of the jar containing the light marbles.

For the jars one, I think Calpitor was right, just a little unclear at first. :D Take 1 marble from jar 1, 2 from jar 2, 3 from jar 3 etc and weigh that pile of marbles together.
If all the marbles weighed 2 grams, you'd expect the pile to weigh (1+2+...+9+10)*2 grams, ie 110g. So if the pile actually weighs 109g, you know you have 1 1-gram marble, and jar 1 has the light marbles. If it weighs 108g, you know you have 2 light marbles, so jar 2 has the light marbles. 107g => jar 3 and so on until 100g => jar 10.

JARS OF MARBLES: Sorry, Cal. I misread your original response and see now what you meant, and you've got it. Put another way, you take 1 from jar 1, 2 from jar 2, 3 from jar 3, etc. So you should have 55 marbles. Weigh them on the digital scale. If they were all 2 grams each, you would have 110 grams. Since some of them are just 1 gram, you'll have less than 110 grams. Just subtract the actual weight from the expected weight of 110 and the difference will be the number of the jar with underweight marbles.
Ex: Assume jar 6 has the half-weight marbles. When you weigh them, you'll have 104 grams. 110-104=6, the number of light marbles, therfore the number of the jar.

If you're asking the truth guard, your answer has one lie in it - the other guard would lie about the door, and this guard is passing that answer on to you correctly. So it's the other door.Quote:
