Just came across another nice freebie if you're administrering a network. Its called NBTSCAN, available at http://www.inetcat.org/software/nbtscan.html
On the surface, its a simple NetBIOS name resolver. If you've got an IP address, but need the machine name, you normally would do "nbtstat -a {ipaddress}" to look it up. With NBTSCAN, you can pass a single address, a range of addresses, a network/mask, or even a text file list. It returns the IP, MAC, Netbios name of server and user. Now what's really nice is if you combine the output with the FIND command, you have a really powerful little tool. I wrote a simple, one-line batch file, nbfind.bat:
@nbtscan 192.168.10.0/24 | find "%1"
This scans my entire subnet and returns just line line(s) that match the parameter I specified. But because NBTSCAN returns so much information, it means I can, with a single tool, search on IP, MAC, NetBios or even user information. For example:
What's the machine name of 192.168.31.103?
nbfind 192.168.10.103 returns all the info for that IP address;
What's the MAC address of my e-mail server?*
nbfind MAILSRVR returns info on the machine named MAILSRVR;
Where is user BGATES currently logged in?*
nbfind BGATES returns info on the machine BGATES is logged in to;
How many 3Com NICs to I have on the network?*
nbfind 00-b0-d0 retuns info on ALL the machines with 3Com NICs;
What's the IP address assigned to a specific MAC address?
nbfind 00-b0-d0-d0-48-b1 retuns info on a specific MAC address
etc.
(Note that NetBIOS name, Server Name and User name are all returned in CAPS, and that by default, FIND is case sensitive, so you'll need to either pass your parameter in CAPS or add the /I switch to the FIND command in the batch file. Also, this obviously doesn't work if the machine's not tunred on!)
NBTSCAN and FIND both have additional switches, so with a few more lines in thebatch file, you canbuild yourself a really powerful tool. I already consider this one a "must-have"!
Fuelm@n:
Great list, you get the MVP award for this thread. However, here is my two cents on a couple of alternatives to two of your recommendations.
First, for a search bar app, I prefer Search Bar Pro (it's freeware, ignore the "Pro" tag). The best advantage for me is that it does not have to reside in the task bar, and as a floating search bar, it can be positioned anywhere, and just happens to fit perfectly out of the way over the top description bar of your browser, but will also hide as an icon in the task bar if for some reason you want to park it for while. Also, it has the basic functionality of Dave's Quick Search Deskbar but is less complicated and seems to be faster. Now, if they ever revise DQSD to be a floating toolbar like SBP, it would be a much more desirable search component to me.

Secondly, on sticky note apps, I have found that ATNotes is pretty darned good. I have not tried TurboNotes, but ATNotes appears to be just as good or maybe better feature-wise. Anyone care to venture any advice on that contention? At the time I was researching and trying out all of the available sticky note freeware, ATNotes won out, but I see that there are a lot more out there now, so are there any experts on the latest and best freeware sticky note apps?

LASTLY, but maybe more importantly, the thread below is very similar, but is not necessarily only for freeware, although a great deal of is freeware…

Is AVG pretty much the last "free" anti-virus software (besides the online scanners)?
and
Is it THAT important to have a AV installed on the hard drive if one is scanning w/ the online scanners?
Absolutely, you should have a local anti-virus scanner installed (and frequently updated). Scans real-time, so response time is better, and scans even if you're off the 'net. I consider the on-line scanners a nice "only if you don't have anything else" option, but certainly not a replacement for a locally installed product.

not sure where I found this one, but I think it's pretty neat
http://www.rainbowfolders.aionel.net/
Rainbow Folders (RF) is an easy to use program, which allows you to change color of the icon representing chosen folder to any color you like. What for ? Mainly to boost yours computer usage speed & skills. When you're exploring directory which contains lots of subdirectories in Windows Explorer you can easily commit a mistake, e.g. by clicking the folder's icon which have similar name to the one you really wanted to go. When the folders will be marked with the colors of your desire you won't make any mistake and after some time you'll be clicking the right folders by the impulse. For example you can use RF to mark subdirectory TEMP inside C:\WINDOWS\. Then after going to the system dir you won't be searching the TEMP dir on the whole screen, but at the start you will click e.g. the eye attacking bloodly red folder. And now the best part: you can colorize unlimited number of folders - each into a different color. So you can e.g. colorize to red all important folders, then colorize all frequently visited folders to green etc. Also the effect of colorizing folders is not only visible in Explorer but in whole system, so also in any directory selection tree, and open/save dialog in any Windows application ! But changing colors is not everything you can do with help of RC, you can also set an extra warning when someone will be trying to delete colorized folder, and optional text that will 'pop up' when the cursor stops above the folder's icon for a while. Speed up your work now !
This is really a great thread.
Fuelm@n posted a link about about Natata Anti-Spam tool for webmasters, which searches for email addresses and encodes them into a format that cannot be read by robots that spider Web sites use to extract e-mail addresses.
This is great software.
Does anyone know of similar freeware that would do the same thing for URL links on a website.
This is for a user group (non-profit) website, which posts lots of URLs to vendor websites, vendor products reviewed, presentations, etc.
Hopefully, there is such a tool out there.
Cheers,
Linda
:D :D
You could try making it a bitmap or gif instead of text thus it wont be easily read by bots.
Unfortunately, whether you take the time to make the URL a bit map or a GIF or to encrypt takes lots of time, when there are lots of new content pages being posted every month. That is why I was hoping to find a freeware program, which would automate this time consuming task.
I do appreciate your suggestions but it will not resolve our issues.
Cheers,
Linda
;) :D
I have not tried this but thought that it would be very useful to some who have files that just won't delete. There's been several threads on this board with this very issue of being unable to delete a certain file... hth
DelinvFile is a Free Utility that you can use to delete data files that you have not been able to delete using the normal Windows Delete function.
DelinvFile is a Windows program that provides a convenient User Interface for selecting the file that you need to delete and provides for a choice of two delete methods...
I did a search and did not see it here (surprisingly?), so thought I should post a great little prog that lurks in the background and alerts you of any potentially nefarious activity (hopefully it doesn't do any nefarious activity on it's own...).
It's kind of like a firewall in that you can set trusted apps, etc., but it does a whole lot more, montoring registry changes and so on...
Might be for the paranoid, or for when you have a new system and it is not yet locked down, or for those that maintain a lot of financial or personal info...
Anyway, it's free and a very well thought out component...
It's called "system safety monitor".
