What "little" program could you simply not do without?

Hi All,

Just ran across a little program that adds to your right click context menu that copies the file path of items on your computer and enables you to paste the file path into whatever you wish. Quite honestly, I don't know how I got along without it.........

I suppose it's not a program strictly speaking (although there is a dll file involved ;) ) But this little reg hack & dll install allows you to save and restore desktop icon placement by right clicking the recycle bin & choosing. Has saved me a number of times from having to rearrange my sixty or so icons after going into safe mode or deleting shelliconcache etc.

You mentioned WinZip; I have WinZip 7.0; have never paid for it as I use it rarely; I use UltimateZip as mentioned before. UZ has extracted and finished by the time WinZip gets through the nag screen and lets you push the I Agree button. If you haven't tried it, take a look at Their Home page.

It's free too, no nag screens, etc.

One other, I thought of is SoftCat which is invaluable if you install a lot of software. It's free too (as are a lot of my programs), and nearly invaluable. They have other 'catalog' programs like for stamps or music, which are purchasable, but their software catalog program is free.

A new shareware program for you to trial EXTRADNS by www.extratools.com speeds up your connection a little bit better.

Apologies are in order; just went over to the UZ forum and find there's a discussion about UZ adding a banner ad. Lots of people unhappy. I, however, have the 2.6 version (apparently the last one before the ad). There are lots of other zipper/unzippers that are free, however none has been as compatable with WinZip as UltimateZip.

Anyway, just thought I'd update my post.

discogail mentioned a clipboard cashe program called Clipomatic; I used another one called Cliptrak

there's an even better one called Yankee Clipper . These are both freeware, so enjoy.

Drive Image is a powerquest product, and its just fab. It makes a full image of all the data on the selected drive, compressed and spanned accross as many CDs as it takes. My basic installation of 1.2Gb fits onto one CD when compressed. You can also choose compression ratios.
You can restore it into any partition of any size (as long as its at least as big as the data, of course)

i believe EvrSoft 1st Page is my most needed program. it is the best html editor i have used

PC Magazine now charges a $20 yearly fee to download any of their programs. I subscribe to the magazine, and it's not even free for me anymore. As a subscriber, my fee for the service is $15 vs. the $20 others pay. I feel as a subscriber to the magazine, mine should at least be free, but it's not.

You can still download ClipTrak but only at a different site.

You can download Yankee Clipper at a different site also. Yankee Clipper III version 1.91, it is the same program PhiloVance mentioned, I just could get his link to work.

1. CleanSweep - deletes unwanted programs and files from your hard drive, zaps unneeded Internet clutter (cookies, ActiveX Controls, and so on), and backs up unused applications and important system files.

CleanSweep is one that I could not do without! I've had it for years - originally a product by Quarterdeck, now Symantec.

I don't think you can get it as a separate program anymore; Symantec now bundles it with its other junk.

2. Here's another vote for Proxomitron! Does more than webwasher - without the heavy drain on resources. It took me a while to learn how to do my own little filters but the standard set will get you going fast.

3. Yeah for DriveImage. I back up my office machines with DriveImage. Saved my butt when hard drives decided to give up the ghost (no pun intended).

1by1 mp3 player. No frills, it weighs in at 34kb yet has a superb sound enhancing feature.

Many of the programs mentioned are great. ghost, ws_ftp, winzip are among my favorites.
I use panorama for my wallpaper shuffling. I also use a little utility called wbc2jpg to grab webshot images. I dislike webshots software but often like the images on their site.
wbc2jpg lets me extract them ;-)
just do a web search for wbc2jpg I'm sure you'll turn it up.

Turns out that Webshots brought legal charges against the makers of "Wbc2jpg". SERVICE SUSPENDED TO AVOID LEGAL ANNOYANCES

glad to help. I've found quite a few of the items people have mentioned usefull.
Another one I like is caser . As I'm sure anyone who runs an ftp site can attest to, file naming can be a pain. caser will convert all filenames to upper or lower case, and can recursively hit all directories.

- Acronis True Image (I like it better than ghost, easier to use and does the job fantastically)
- IE Booster (excellent add-ons for IE)
- jv16 PowerTools , excellent system maintenance tools and free
- SecureCRT , the only sane way to telnet with SSH..
- Connectix VirtualPC for OS emulation (no more dual boot needed!)

- VirtualDR (I admit I have a few logins :P)
- SnipURL.com for shorter URLs (use it as an online bookmark manager with some cool features)

winzip bloated? it is one of the fastest unzippers out there! (in my experience on win 98, nt, 200 and xp at least). in fact i think winrar's interface is stupid with all that clicking into folders required...

Its much easier with Open Expert, believe me, you can open a file in as many apps as you like with just a couple of clicks.

i guess i wouldnt bother with a whole application for such a minor purpose, especially when i can easily do this much more cleanly by myself with one simple registry entry...

Open Expert saves a lot of registry editing, is free and doesn't use any resources to speak of. I'm with Beep. (FREE)

NetLaunch is a good freeware app that is particularly useful for people like myself who still don't have access to high speed in any economically sound form. You can set it to start up any number of applications after it dials up (or detects a connection) to the web. You can then configure it to close any applications (ie ZA, IE, Opera, Eudora...... AtGuard) when you disconnect. Small too.

SearchBar is a great tool to search different sites without having to go there first. It also allows you to add your own sites. For example, if you want to add the newspaper classifies, you can.

I'd also suggest downloading the Search Bar 1.1 Internet Explorer Addon. This addon lets you use the search engines you've added to Search Bar 1.1 in Internet Explorer. Just select some text, right-click and choose the search engine you want to use.

Spybot Search&Destroy, IrfanView, AVG, Kazaa Lite, etc...

I live in the country and use the ol' copper lines for my internet use. I use DAP > Download Accelerator by www.speedbit.com. It triples my downloads, and logs all my downloads. My 56 modem almost always hits 5.5 and I have even sustained speeds over 7. This has been especially useful when finding an interesting sounding program that has been given a different or unfamilliar description, but you already have. And has a resume feature.

I also use stripmail http://www.dsoft.com.tr/stripmail/ it removes and repaginates your forwarded email of those stupid>>>>>'s.
I put a thingy? ( gawd I must be tired) on my desktop and w/ two clicks its done. This way saves a lot of opening ang closing windows while in OE, since I only have to minimize OE

I'm glad to see such a huge outpouring of information in this thread. I had hoped that it would become what it has and I have gained a huge amount of knowledge from all of your contributions. I've saved every page of this thread so far because I intend to use many of the programs that have been listed.

Wow, I can't keep up with all the stuff. Would be nice (as most people do) to note whether it's freeware or not. Many of us like our programs free. :D

IIRC, DAP is adware, probably not bad adware, but adware none the less. I think pricelessware had an alternative for a download manager. I actually went out and bought one since so many of them had spyware attached (GoZilla, Getright, DAP, etc.)

Here are two free ones that are highly recommended.

Pop peeper. Works for POP3 accounts and with yahoo and hotmail. I use it while online to monitor incoming email. Fast and uses minimal resources. It's a must have for me.

How do you use 'pop peeper' to access Yahoo? Do you need to have pop3 with Yahoo, or is it a web based alternative way of doing it?

The yahoo mail feature is built in. All you need to do is select it. It works perfectly. An no, you don't need a POP3 account with yahoo, just a regular free account.
