i made the reponse before you annouced the success of installing win95.
i merely thought since win98 would not detect the cdrom and load drivers, it was not an atapi cd-rom. and non'atapi cd-roms are usually connected to sound card, or scsi driven.
one must look inside the computer to see if a cdrom is cabled to a soundcard
good luck

I am connected dirctly to the mobo. I have a goldstar cd rom and it is atapi (what ever that means)
-
thats great.
it makes loading os'es easier.
-
The goldstar is the one that I am trying to get to work on the Compaq. (with no luck)
-
goldstar cd-roms are several years old.
are you sure its not toast??
-
This CD-rom has been in the computer since 1997. I am just hoping that it is not gone. I can't buy a new one right now and it is my husbands computer and he needs the CD-Rom. He deals with a lot of music stuff.
-
have you loaded the drivers for it??
www.bootdisk.com
download the win95 bootdisk with cd-rom drivers.
-
I have installed the correct drivers.
We connected the CD_ROM drive to another computer and it does not work there either. On the other computer it just shows that there is nothing on the CDs.
I have just about decided that this CD drive is dead.
-

After all this I agree that CDROM has seen it's better days. Time to let it go to CDROM Heaven.
