Further to one of my threads,Win update site, about Win xp sp 1,I did mention, that windows update will trash your system if your useing an ilegal FCKGW disk or what ever,so be warned,if youve installed the sp1 disk,and you have an ilegal copy of xp,then try Win update site after.Crassssssssssssh,or some thing to that affect.
Do not buy pirate software its ilegal. :D :D
Just for the heck of it, I decided to see how SP1 did on a clean XP install. Dropped in the CD, formatted with NTSF and installed XP and let the machine reboot.
Ran SP1 and then went to Windows Update to see how many Critical Updates they showed post SP1 installation. Zero.
I'd say that's pretty good, considering a first run through of Windows Update after a clean install usually generated about 15-19 Critical Update entries to be downloaded.
As far as the Recommended Updates, there were four, one of which was for a Beta of WMP, Euro Conversion, Movie Player Update and a .NET update.
The Add/Remove programs shows the installed size as about 20MB. Didn't check the temp files, but the Uninstall file was about 140MB on disk, 200MB total.
BTW TEG, your signature link doesn't work for some reason - but its a great site, I've bookmarked it :)
The increase in size will vary acording to the number of fixes and updates you have already installed, so it could be as small as 10 meg or the whole 140 meg.
I also am waiting for some results on other peoples machines before I try it.

Just tried the link and got a download time of 23 minutes using FlashGet.
Since a lot of people are commenting on there download time, I'll throw in mine: just over 11 minutes, using Mass Downloader.
It should be interesting to see what kind of download times Monday brings. Conjures up memories of the military and the "Hurry Up And Wait" mantra.

Anyone about to do a clean install...
...I just read the Service Pack can be slipstreamed into a Win XP Install CD so it will install it seemlessly during the install... its suposed to be quicker that way and save space so i heard... haven't tried it myself yet, but was wondering if it anyone has tried it?

But here is the a link to the Win2000 SP3 slipstream instructions, if you look under "The Integrated Installation" it gives instructions on how to do the slip stream with Win2000, I'd imagine that XP will be the same

And if you want to slipstream in sp1 and create a new integrated, bootable XP install cd have a look here (shows how to do it using EZCD, with link to do it using Nero).
Thx guys for the links, i wasn't planing on a clean install (but might do if it saves space by slipstreaming) i'll have to goose at that anyway to see...
Would i be right to say that... it would over-right some of the original files from the XP Install CD, basically making it a newer version of windows CD with SP1 Integrated rather than a later AddOn?
...if so i can see where the posibilitys of space saving come into play and would definatly be worthwhile IMO.

Exactly, that's the whole point. What you end up with is an XP SP1 install cd.
All the comments here and those who downloaded XP SP1 obviously have cable modem or DSL. In my neck of the woods I have on dial-up but tried anyways to download overnight. First it went well and it made it to almost 50% in about 6 hours but then the connection was cut. So, I probably have to order the CD from MS to install SP 1. The dial-up connectio works pretty well here and I should have completed the download in about 12 hours.
That's a bummer Desertfox. I can't help noticing that these Service Packs are getting bigger and bigger. When I downloaded SP2 for Win2000 last year it came in at about 10 or 11 Mb, and even that took an hour on a dial-up connection. I think MS ought to remember that most people are still on dial-up and not just cater for us lucky few that have broadband.
I don't know why they can't divide these mammoth downloads up into managable chunks so that dial-up users can d/l the files in easy stages.

Your so right, that will be why alot of people won't bother no one without with SP1, because of the length of the download.They won't bother getting the disc from MS,and just not bother with it. Most people would ignore this anyway, but now it will way way more

And remember that ordering the disk is about $5 I guess to "cover" S & H. A little pocket money for MS. They should send it for free since the SP is "free" anyway for those who are able to download it via broadband. The strategy seems clear!
Why should any business eat it on production, processing, and shipping of a product to a customer? They make it available for free for download, which makes sense. But if a customer prefers to have MS put it on a CD, package and send it to them, why shouldn't that person pay for it?
no company should eat costs, except whe they are basically fixing a product that has shipped. I do agree with you, but I f you don't have broadband , the download is areal pain in the butt. As i said before alot of people will just ignore it[too much time or hassle] They should do this like aol discs, put them in the mail for everyone.
I do have calbe access, so this is really not about me.

Well, you certainly do have a point about fixing a product that has already shipped.
If it's the same as some other service packs, there will probably be an option at Windows Update for Microsoft to scan the computer and just download and install just the parts that each computer needs at that time. That should be some help to people with slow connections. I'll have to check Windows Update tommorow to see if that option is available and how much of a difference in size there is.
Also a good point. As a matter of fact I think I read that in one of the pc mags. Not sure

I just got the email from the webmaster about this thread. NAV 2002 discovered a file being attached containing the following:

I was just reading some of the threads about microsoft eating the cost of the SP1 CD. It is my opinion, that they would not have to "eat the cost" of the CD if they had done it right to begin with. Why so many fixes for a program just over a year old??? M$ could save money by putting all the programers on the program and haveing them find the errors before it left the plant.
I worked for a company that was trying to sell a flight simulator to the Army. The demo test was very bad and the president of the company had to eat it the hard way.
What did he do about the problems??? I spent the next 10 months running the simulator every day for 5 hours writting up all the problems I found and pointed out to the programmers. They fixed them. We should have done it the first time.
Let M$ eat it this time and maybe they will be more careful next time. LOL

You can bank on one thing - if the Justice Dept. wasn't so far up MS's butt, there would be no SP1!!! This sure as hell wasn't done from the goodness of their hearts. I will be surprised if they make it easy for anyone to download w/o hi-speed connect - that would nullify their reason for integrating all their crap in the first place.
Just my humble opinion.
Having said that - downloaded in about 14-15 min. and installed - so far no major problems, other than giving ZA permissions all over again to allow connections of various programs. Just joyous it didn't screw up my network or cable connection. Knock on wood...
Wino, I'm sure Microsoft had a big party when Mr. Bush was elected. You know the current Justice Dept. has no intention of pursuing any actions against them. You've seen SP1 now, and do you really see anything in there that would have satisfied the Clinton Justice Department's concerns? It's more likely that Microsoft is using that as an excuse to try to get some of the people with illegal copies of XP to purchase a valid license.
If Microsoft can push this silly service pack out and get the current Justice Dept. to say it satisfies their concerns, they will have won a big victory. It's a pretty smart legal move.

You are right on - in retrospect, I think the nine States holding out on JD settlement probably had more to do with SP1 being released than anything else. And yes, SP1 is more of a cosmetic ruse, than a real solution - hiding things you don't want rather than removing totally will satisfy JD they have done a good thing for the average consumer - can you say smoke screen?

I just visited the Windows Update site and I do not see the SP1 listed. Have any of you gotten the SP1 from the Windows Update site?

all was going well until I got to 50Mb when it bombed me out & refused to let me back in. Pity because I had a good link d/l at 58k/s so it would have taken just 38mins on my DSL link.
Has it been pulled from this & other sites??

for thos having probs downloading it, i'd recommend using a download manager so u can at least resume it if it fails, also u can be downloading it from several sources at once so it should max out your connection with no probs...
myself i used GetRight, worked flawlessly... flat out on my cable connection.
Thx again for the slipstreaming links, i've made a new updated XP Installation Disk with it, later on this evening i'm gunna do a fresh install and see how it goes, should save me many MB's of downloads from Windows Update as pointed out by The Elder Geek.
Might have to do the same with the Win2k disk as well, i like this slipstreaming stuff :D
BTW, no XP Service Pack on windows update here neither!

Nosing around the MS site I saw where they have XP/SP1 slipstreamed and available for download but you have to be subscribed to MSDN to get access.
Surprisingly enough the other sites have been doing pretty well to this point, hovering between 250-350 Kb/Sec. I'd almost be willing to bet that doesn't hold up through the evening and night hours. :rolleyes:

Do any of you who have download and installed the SP1 know where Microsoft hid the way to get rid of Windows Messenger? Or is it that Microsoft has determined that all the screwed up ways to get rid of it is enough?
Well for anyone interested the XP Install with slipstreamed SP1 went perfect...
...no critical updates needed at all after the fresh install...
...and the install size was only about 10MB's more than a standard XP install with the original disk.
In my case this has saved me a pile of junk on my hard drive equating to about 300MB's and will make future installs take alot less time to update... So M$ does actually do things to make it easier for us, :D D*** good feature, I'm impressed.

I sure wish I did that way! took almost 500mgs before getting ride of backup on add remove progra. Still a big download, and don't even try without broadband. I have 1500k down and with the long install after it took just about 1 hour. But every this works.

Well after seeing the post on here I again tried Windows update & sure enough this time it displayed IE6 SP1 and XP SP1 to be downloaded separately from each other. The XP SP 1 seemed to be about 54Mb (possibly due to me regularly using update feature?) but it was painfully slow on my 576kbps DSL link with each 1Mb taking about 60 seconds instead of the usual 17 secs!!
No problems so far.....

I agree, Lotus. The slipstreamed install went flawlessly. I've seen a couple of posts regarding a problem with account switching in OE6 that I have to look into but have to set up some dummy e-mail accounts first since I don't use OE6.Quote:

Jubal: I just checked in Add/Remove Programs under the new Set Program Access and Defaults category. Messenger is listed there for removal although I haven't tried it yet since I have a few clients that use it for support access.
Ok. Her we are, Sept. 9. Two critical updates to install separately from the Windows update site.
1) IE 6.0 Sp1. Installed it but it killed all my passwords. Is that kind of behaviour necessary by MS. It included also the username and passord for this board (VirtualDr)s I have to redo every single password. Secondly, and this is a warning: Attend your installation from the first moment to the last. There are window message boxes coming up all the time that have to be ok'ed. If you do not react, at least in dial-ups like mine, the connection will be cut. I went through it.
2) Tried also to install Windows XP SP1. The installtion file was downloaded but each time I want to start the installation, MS cancels the update. What is that? I am pretty pi.... about this.
I had none of that trouble and I did it the same way you did [win update]. Did not lose anything and had no dialouge boxs after it started. BIG download though, even with cable. As taken alot of room
