DrMdj, et al
it does open interesting options, and offers many angles.
some might be called footangles. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
yup, Goose might use (even temporarily, so he can transfer data) the drive in his compac
it ain't a very fast one, but 6.x giga is six giga...
the thing about boot order with other PCI controller (like a highpoint) is in fact quite easily overcome.
I had the abit hotrod and this adaptec in one machine, and could boot from both, if so desired.
Only thing was that when I wanted to boot into RAID, I had to move the card.
(described in the hotrod installation sheet)
funny part was, I could disable boot from raid in the hotrod setup (ctrl-H), and still boot to scsi (ctrl-A)
(I hardly ever used the scsi as boot drive, since it is no speedmonster. it's outclassed by any fast ata33)
in the non raid modo, with the hotrod, when I wanted to boot to raid, the sheet warned me I should not have an active drive on primary IDE...
the epox raid DDR mobo had the option to boot from IDE, ata100 highpoint, and scsi in BIOS... it had enough options to make me dizzy https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
anyhow, most folks do not move around the hardware much, once it is set up.
the basic use I got out of this stuff was primarily for data storage, and backup burning.
at the moment, I have a 30giga in a tray to hold important data, so I can let go of this "puny" 6 giga.
btw, trays and bays are interesting, but one can get into a drive letter hell https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
its a bit like the options goose already has.
In the manual for his mobo you find he can boot from IDE or ata100, sorta like a BIOS boot manager...
(this method is not recommended for running winME and 98 alongside, since ME creates restore folders on all drives, which 98 can have a problem with.)
anyway, I need the space for four identical 40 gig drives, which with a DVD and plexwriter just eats space... (yes, I intend to go with a striped mirror. Already have drivecoolers and such. I may have to hang on to that big noisy tower after all.)
------------------
I think we forgot to ask you a question...
Kind regards, Jaak

Wait a minute here. Goose, your board is the A7V-133, correct?

No, his board is the A7V with the KT133 chipset. Believe me there is a difference in the motherboards.

Thanks Train. That's why I asked. For some reason I got it in my head that it was the 133.

Takes a while to realize the 133 diferences and looking at the mobo and seeing 2 instead of 4 IDE sockets, I said huh a couple times myself.

It's just for some reason I started thinking that he had gone for the 133 (instead) and that I had seen A7V133 listed in various posts about his parts list. And if it was the 133 afterall... But alas it is not.

No Goose. I just suddenly got the notion in my head that your board was the A7V133 instead of the A7V. I had operated up till now thinking it was the A7V. But if I was wrong and it was the A7V133 it had definate implications. Train confirmed that it is (just) the A7V though.

I was just wondering... what are the requirements for holding your own Delta building thread? Most of the parts for my new rig will be on the way in the next couple of weeks, and it would be great to share the build with the Delta crew - but I don't know if I'm worthy https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
btw gg1 congrats again on a great build, hit a couple snags but between Train's direct support and the rest of the VDr regulars all tests were completed quickly and efficiently.
And I'm still waiting for that milkshake https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
-
spragers
Ok by me.
While waiting for the others to post how about posting what you have to put together.
Did you get and print "bistro's" list?
Motherboard manual link could be of great help.
I had the book form of the manual as GG1 used the same mobo.
EDIT: "And I'm still waiting for that milkshake" Can't get good help nowadays at all.

Provided BT isn't up in smoke yet (with those temps how could it? https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ here's what I have on the way (and I do have to print out bistro's list, too):
MSI K7T266Pro-R mobo manual link - Acrobat format
512MB Crucial PC2100 DDR RAM
Sound Blaster Live! Platinum 5.1 edition
INNO3D Geforce2 Ultra Pro video card
RAID striping setup w/ 2 Western Digital 30gig 7200RPM ATA/100 hard drives, each with a 3-fan HD cooler (also for air intake)
Delta 12x DVD drive w/ PowerDVD 3.0
Acer 12x8x32x CDRW drive w/ software
LinkSys Etherfast 10/100 NIC
Powered USB Hub
Logitech iTouch Cordless Freedopm Optical keyboard and mouse (PS2 or USB)
I still have to order a CPU (looking at an Athlon XP 1700, $50 less then the 1800) and a case (I have a few in mind, of course the ones I want are out of stock).
Misc. - I splurged and ordered the Creative Inspire 5.1 6-speaker system https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
then the leftovers from the Compaq, still chugging right along (will be giving it to my younger brother for Christmas):
-17" monitor
-printer
-USB webcam
-USB scanner
-Sony DigiCam
For the moment everything will be piling up in the middle of our living room floor https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ I shall do my best to document the adventure with digital images and (ha ha) should nothing go wrong at all in the build, I will sneakily do something intentionally wrong for the Delta crew to fix https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Hi spragers, You have all the requirements to use a Delta thread to build yourself a computer. You want to build!!!!!! That's great.
Here's what happens. You already are a Delta Crew member. You say you want to start in a couple of weeks. We can start now with you presenting your comments and questions. The Delta Crew responds and guides. You should have already printed Bistro's modified Step by step road map.
We can start Operation Delta xx - 4 - 1 - Name (of your computer) any time you wish. Just say the word. We have three Delta computers under our belts built succesfully -yours can be the fourth.
The last BT thread is done and any futher questions and comments can be done on the question and answers thread.
I found out one thing as you build on a Delta Thread. You post what you are doing and the crew is making comments, you ask a question they will answer. The build goes at the builders pace. In other words you can't make a mistake as you are building if you read the posts. Any other questions? https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Just FYI I leave on vacation thursday morning for a little over a week...so I will not be around to pester anyone

Ok. I know I mentioned this in the opening of that modified Setup list, but I just wanted to perfectly clear on this. It is a guideline, not gospel. A sketch map if you will that hopefully helps in keeping a build in some order to as to prevent confusion, half-steps, etc.. It should be used in conjunction with a tutorial, the mobo manual, info from and posting to Operation Delta, etc..

Bistro,
Sorry, once the list was published it became gospel. No after-the-fact disclaimers or retractions. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
spragers,
You're perfectly welcome to set up a Delta thread for your build when the time comes. Of course you're worthy. These threads are intended for everyone/anyone. Simply make the checks for the standard fees out to...

Sarkazztic, That is the video card I have that you posted. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Again Bistro's step by step list is a general road map, but a good one.
Spragers, I'm going to have to change over threads today. Got a name for your computer yet? We're ready when you're ready. We'll do the general Operation Delta stuff on the Questions and Answers thread when your thread is started. Looks like you have some good components you are gathering up.
I may have come up with a free 17" monitor for BT and if not Fry's is running an $88.00 special again.

Thanks for the encouragement everyone. Once I start getting a few more of the parts here I'll organize a new Delta thread. May be a couple weeks yet, depends on the speed of the collective body of FedEx, UPS, USPS - and whenever I finally find that elusive "case of dreams" lol
...in the meantime, maybe we could have a contest to name the new computer https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
-
Spragers I am sure you have seen the insides of the inwin case that Goose used for bt....very nice....take another look at it...also I used the antec sx-830 on my dream machine...you may want to take a look at it too....very nice especially if you are going to do a athlon cpu or any overclocking that would produce alot of heat....this thing has slots 4 5 case fans 2 intake 2 exhaust and 1 more intake in front of the hard drive bays....and it comes with 2 of the fans....so you would only have to pick up 3 more to fill the case and I recommend a slot fan to go in under the video card....check both of these cases out...
-

I can only tell you that RIVEN the sequel to MYST plays awesome on my Savage 4 so it should be incredible on the XTSY card.....because your 3dmark scores are going to be higher......how long until you get things configged enough to run 3dmark?
Have you got BT up to 1.1ghz yet? what speed is it running at if not...
I built 2 machines during this delta operation but didn't actually put them together in the forum.....I am thinking about doing one after the first of the year....an overclocker or something that I may want to do in the Delta fashion.....
Goose I am going to email you something...

So another intrepid voyager starts the trek into cyberspace and makes the first step into being on The Delta Team
I'll be rooting for you Spargers https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ And hopefully I'll be learning some things from all of you, as I save up money to build my own dream machine (Still have quite a while to go in terms of $ and experience, and it'll be nice to "see" another one built)
I was wondering, does the Delta crew have a website? I could make one, with links to the delta threads and Bistros Complete Guide to Building Your own Computer https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Plus of course who could forget the computer songs I made up https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
I have FrontPage 97 and a geocities account that I could use to host it, as long as you don't mind the url being http://www.geocities.com/kmputer_guy0/delta.html

Train Geocities does let you link to pages, it just doesn't let you link images externally. I use my AOL (shudder) account webspace for this purpose. But Geocities will let you link to an HTML page, the page just hast to be uploaded properly (oops) I fixed that, feel free to check it out. I will be posting Bistros guide as soon as I find it, also.

Yeah Train I don't wish that switching monitors thing on anybody...pain in the asus : ) A friend of mine gave me a nice 15in that I use on the test machine and when I work on a machine for a client I hook that monitor to their machine.....am thinking about one of those kvm switches in the future.....but I have bigger and better toys to think about....the geforce video card first off and then maybe some wireless networking. I am very interested in a new motherboard that has the promise ata100 controler built in that will work with my athlon 1.2 and allow future growth up to say 1.5ghz with some overclocking features so I can push the 1.2 a little....I know it will run stable at 1.33ghz but would like to push it a little farther without also pushing the pci bus and other things.....all in good time....
