I am very interested in the performance of that card...I just priced it on pricewatch and it certainly meets my budget on the new card for the athlon....now my curiosity is really peaked for tomorrow night.

And so...it begins. Greengoose1, our intrepid hero, shall at last build the BT. Will he put it all together, power up and the heavens open up with choirs of angels singing? Or shall he build, power up and the system fall like the (mid)tower of Babel? Shall he cry out for joy, or wail and cover himself with sackcloth and ashes? And what about Sarah? Will she quit her job and run away with the handsome doctor? Will Train and bistro pace in front of their computers all night, or actually be more concerned about Sarah and her doctor boyfriend?
Only time will tell...
P.S: Greengoose, if you don't mind, please make sure you have a good copy of the Win 98 startup floppy. I had so many coniptions with Q_o_H and her startup floppy when she was building that I was about to fly down there and smack her with a fly swatter... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

I wasn't around during that time of the original delta but if goose has everyone running around and mailing bootdisks I will have to say bad words.....Bistro what is that secret chant that Goose will neet to say over and over tomorrow night???
-
https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ A FLYSWATTER!!! That's what Mom used to use! I prefer ridgerunr's method of punnishment.
Make a dozen of those buggers, goose! Better to be safe than sorry.
Naah, train. Altho I would still like to have a CD burner, I'm just as content as I can be with this puppy.

Sjentlemen - staaart yourrr engiiiines...
gg1,
I suggest you copy the installation CD to an installation folder on one of your HDs and run the installation from there.
a) You'll get a check of the CD and see if all files are readable.
b) Installation will run faster and you don't run the risk of a read error on the CD during installation.
c) The installation files are always there if some other SW installation needs them - and windows knows it - no need to dig up the CD then.
d) Should your CD one day become unreadable, you have a copy of it right there on your machine.

I too concur with Jaak....having the cab files on the hard drive makes it so much easier when making changes...that box asking for the win98 cd gets to be a pain.....Thanks to whoever it was that showed me the registry hack to install the cab files after install...

Jaak, Ridgerunr, and Sarkazztic. You have all asked questions and they will be answered. I gotta sort through this "stuff".
Unreliable sources tell me that Houston will not be blacked out for this build as might have taken place. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

those of us that have notched a few builds on our belts might tend to incorporate a few of those steps all together into one big step but since this is your first time be gentle : ) stick to the list....
-
Ok...for you greengoose, you will need Chant #27. Chanted in 4/4 time, in a tone similar to the theme song from "Spartacus" (go rent the movie if need be..). It's very, very important that you hold the tongue canted to the left; biting down on it somewhat firmly on every counter-beat. Must be chanted continuously as soon as you open the case:

Well this sucks.... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Friday night is my trivia show (circus) at HFT, so I won't be able to attend the BT build. But I will be here in spirit anyway...besides it will likely go into another day when Goose tries to force a RAM stick into one of those PCI slots. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
I'll still try to stop in and see how things are going, though. Good luck...I had a good time with mine. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Well I've made my decision. I will be building a BT of my own as soon as I get the money for parts. Which may take a while, as I have no regular source of income aside from teaching my grandmothers friends how to check their E-mail and such. I'll have to see if I can get an internship at a company I just heard of.
Interesting story:
I heard of it because while I was out on trick or treat night dressed as a computer (I took an old 386 motherboard and wore it, sandwitch board style https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ ) one woman remarked that maybe I could get an internship with her husbands job as a computer component builder. I'll have to stop back to check it out further, but I'm all hope. Of course it'll probably have to wait till summer when I have more free time.

Imagine. I named myself after an outdated programming language.
My psychology: If your computer is faster than mine (PI 75 Mhz, 24MB RAM), you have ABSOLUTELY no right to complain.

I'm trying Kallikru's suggestion now on installing the OS to a Hard Drive now. Just finished the start up disks. Downloaded Bistro's general setup review. This is allright. I even understand pretty much what ya'all are telling me. What a difference a year makes. A year ago Bistro or Train would say something like "Save something" and I thought it was a 401K plan.

Damit can't sleep. No it's not because i'm anxious about the build. Stupid medication isn't worth this, I'll tell you that right now. And actually I'll be missing the build (or at least the first hour or so) as I'm going to a haloween party (don't have much choice).
And then I'll stay up really late tomorrow checking up on BT, and not wake up until sunday morning, or possibly monday if BT takes a while to make. God I love being a teenager https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Daizy, i promise to get the red kind(but won't promise i can keep it away from my Grandaughter https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ )..
Goose, just read everything suggested,,listen to all the doubtful whispers,,get all the hardware together,,spread all the numbered lists out on the table,,let out a' loud "ZOICKS",,an' tear into that sucka' like Scooby and Shaggy fightin' over a box of Scooby snacks https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ That thing will be up n' runnin'and purrin' along so well,,you'll be bored as spit in a' couple months and tryin' to think of a' way upgrade it,,or install some funky software that'll break it "for" you..
Soo,,relax,,take a' deep breath,,and just go for it..Your about to enter the world of Dr.Frankenstein..Also,,be very sure you have that white lab cloak on when you begin..Otherwise the townspeople won't be able to recognize their adversary when they come with the torches and pitchforks...
Oh yeah,,almost fergot,,be sure you have that lightnin' rod wayyy up there so you can catch the biggest bolt when you hit the power switch... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Have fun.. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

I have complete confidence that this will go well tonight Goose. I understand your virgin jitters, but just take it step by step. You have a lot of things going for ya: you've acquired a lot of knowledge, you've done your homework, you are essentially building a system containing (for the most part) components others here have assembled/used before, and you'll have a great supporting cast behind ya. My guess is the most time consuming or tense time will be when you apply the thermal paste (really not that bad) and go to afix and clamp down the heatsink on the board (carefull there). Ya know, ya really could have gone with the stock heatsink/fan and thermal pad and been just fine. But I know ya want to experiment/learn, so...
There's nothing to fear but fear itself on this build. Ok, so maybe your parts are all out of warranty because you waited so long to build. And so what if the eyes of the whole VDR world are upon ya? It isn't your problem that the future actions of so many prospective builders rest solely upon the outcome of this build. All your friends here are firmly behind you on this despite the fact we are heavily invested in Bistro's pool with the odds currently 700 to 1 against. Just remeber, when the going gets tough, the tough get going. Except those times that they fail miserably. Just thought you'd appreciate these few words of encouragement. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Seriously though, this is going to be both fun and successful. And I'm sorry I won't be here from the start. Hopefully when I check in in late tonight or tomorrow morn you will be sailing away. All the best sir. May it go without a hitch.

Good Morning All, Woke up at 3:45am. Couldn't sleep. Today is the day we will start building BT. I'm not nervous, I'm not nervous. And you turkeys that have built several computers may as well just stop laughing now, because when I join your ranks it will be "Katie bar the door". https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Tell me how to transfer Cab files as you were telling me to. I want to know how to do this faster but I need the mechanics of operation - steps as I have never tried that.
At lunch got to run and get a 3.5 floppy drive. When I was rechecking I found I didn't have it. Check lists are good to have. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ I'm not nervous - like hxxx.

11 hours and counting....
Ok now....let's take a look at this:
Greengoose is popping valium...Daizy is at the clinic trying to see if there's an anitbiotic for the "eebie jeebies"...Train is out scouring the city for "Computer Cigars" to celebrate BT's birth...Q_o_H is busy staining a "BT" PC window...Murf's keyboard will break this evening and he'll be busy looking all over for one that has a Deluxe "Thread Lock" key...Sarrkazztic will miss the build-time, sitting at his table all alone because he actually thinks Train, Jaak and myself will show up for that beer and poker game...jtdoom (Jaak) will miss the build because he thinks Belgium is on Daylight Savings Time...Logowriter will stay at the halloween party until he gets all the candy he wants...Ridgerunr will forget to log on because he's too absorbed in watching "Young Frankenstein"...Spragers will forget because he got his new Tiger Direct catalog in the mail today...Maxximilian will be at the circus...DrMDJ will stay out of it, come back later if things are messed up just to say "Didn't I tell you about that last month?"...Kallikru won't be here because he will have last minute doubts about those cab files on his hard drive and will be busy checking to see if they really do work...and bistro? Bistro will be busy reviewing the entire Operation Delta threads thinking "Oh Lordy...I hope I said the right thing..."
So, greengoose; never fear. We are all behind you! (Easier to run away being behind you...) https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Boy, I'll bet THAT gives you a real warm and fuzzy, huh?
We'll be there, bud. Relax. Friends all around. You'll get that puppy up and running before you know it. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

QoH was MaryAnne and Goose was gilligan and they were down at the lagoon at sunset and...you can take over anytime now Queenie.
If I can be serious for a minute
I asked a while back if anyone suggested for goose to do a trial run of just the mobo cpu and video card before he puts anything inside the case....it can be very frustrating if you put everything inside and then find out one of the components is bad....I always do this first....(well after the first time that something was bad anyway)
Makes it much easier
-
And greengoose1 will announce "It's a boy!" and enthusiastically cut the power cord, thinking it's the umbilical.., https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
BTW, goose: Please do the "dry run"--before mounting the mobo, put the CPU and HSF on there, also the RAM--check to make sure that the vid card can be mounted on there without having to remove the RAM sticks first. There's been some boards coming out with that nuisance "glitch". Will save you some grief. And don't forget that little dab of thermal paste and to plug in that HSF.
And make sure you have your toothbrush, your jammies and "Teddy"....(I'm sounding like an anxious mother....)
