Hi
considerations.
American rebate coupons don't work for us poor old continentals.
shipping and handling is usually restrictive, and so is import tax and the extra VAT.
even buying something from the UK is often not worth my while, because of the extraordinarily steep shipping costs.
(at least one doesn't have to pay VAT and import on those, but I read that UK prices are higher than US prices.)
so, for me it's mostly shopping around locally, but I have gotten some HW shipped from the States in the past.
I have mostly been buying retail software from US sources, tho. I can do this directly if they have a FAX and accept visa, or thru paypal.
I had a friend snap up copies of the norton sysworks GG1 pointed us to.
I will still do okay because direct international shipping was way overrated.
Some companies simply do not consider cheaper shipping methods.

Remember, there is always something we forgot to ask.
And, it's only FREE advice!

"Some companies simply do not consider cheaper shipping methods" - how true, Jaak.
I once had som ram sticks sent from Mushkin (150Mhz/CAS2 - that was when RAM prices were still sky-high). I did a bit of calculating on the shipping cost and found, that the total price incl. P&H and VAT (25% here) would be ok.
I was then rather amazed to find that they (I think it was UPS) had handed over the VAT handling to some third party that charged me about $ 45 just to cash in the VAT! Pay up to pay...! "Yo! We have an apple over here - come on everybody and have a bite!"
It seems they think everybody's just a company that can count out extra expenses...
Well, luckily we don't have that VAT circus anymore within the EU.

Jaak and Kallikru, Do either of you know how much the shipping is on a CD-RW disk from the staes to your places? What I was thinking is this is a good way to swap large amounts of data which conceivably will save money. Just a thought. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

I really don't know how much it'll cost to mail a CD across the pond - I haven't tried yet. I guess it depends on how you can mail it - I think I could mail it from here in a sort of ordinary letter.
I just put a jewel box with 2 CDs on a weight and it said 108 grams. Add a little cardboard - I don't think it would pass 250 grams. And that would cost about $ 4-5 to anywhere in the world from here. You could even leave out the jewel box and maybe get it below 100 grams - with the added risk. Postage would then be $ 3-4.
But why bother - wouldn't it be easier to locate some place to exchange the data electronically? If they are not sensitive, that is. Unfortunately a lot of these "drives" (I-drive, free-drive ect.)have closed down free operations of disk space, probably due to misuse. It's a pity because I found them quite practical when I had to get 20 or 30 MBs of data home from work. It's only been 4 weeks since we finally got a burner in our dept. - and they call themselves application development department...
Anyway, I don't think the cost to mail a CD will ruin our economies.

What I have found out I use the CD-RW disk as storage and also you don't have to worry about losing the info due to a bad hard drive. Do it once and you've got it. Just thinking out loud a litttle.

The only problem I've seen with CD-RW as far as data backup is that they're unreadable in CD-ROM. (Unless you have one of those whiz-bang all-in-one-CD drives). Never liked that. Usually put everything on CD-R--disadvantage of that is obvious; it's there and it ain't coming off. TDK stock
rises 3 points every time I go to the store.

Is this Off-Topic or What
Where's my Laptop, Oct 26th hum, 5 days later as you install the motherboard the goblins (US)will invade.
Been reading Delta gang, and put a BIG RED X on my calender for Oct 26, can't wait!!! Didn't partake in previous build but may offer some useless comments on this build......
Speaking of 486's (somebody was), I tinkered with one for about a month, could not get Win 95 loaded on the damn thing (BIOS was a 451G), and if you know anything bout this BIOS it was and is not Y2K compat...so Win 95 would not load. Hours and Hours wasted, then I finally figured out it was not Y2K as the time and date kept changing back after reboot duh.......
The motherboard made a great doorstop after its traveled down the stairs (it was out of the case)..... and when it was new was probably $1000 bucks.....
Enough rambling...hey I got a 133MHZ system sitting here that works...going up for sale....and it hasn't traveled down the stairs yet....
Well Delta Gang the pressure is on....better your 1st build....I'll keep ya all straight, or maybe you'll keep me straight (out of it).....
Geez, haven't got this excited since the 17" monitor came out.......

Hi
in the past I had 'some things' mailed to me from the US
erm, things like like 6500 books in huge mailsacks and boxes, huge boxes with bargainpriced (older but useful) retail software, and such.
global priority on small envelopes, or so-called flat rate global, is not too prohibitive.
next comes surface mail, for larger shipments.
for people with modem connections, sending a CDRw is quite cost effective
well, in Europe it is, because many of us pay about two bucks per hour to be connected with a dial-up ISP (and that´s OFF peak...)
Goose, today I messed about with IBM drivetools.
I had the newest drive on a hotrod, and must have forgotten how to get filecopy on the boot floppy
(it is on the floppy as a windows installable file...)
what I also noticed was that in hotrod BIOS, I wasn´t offered which drive I wanted to boot from.
(I had disconnected the one in the tray, so that kinda figures)
while doing the disk, drivemanager did ask if I wanted to boot from this drive, and I said Yes.
I then used ghost i had on floppy to clone part to part
jeesh, I must have missed a step in preparing the IBM disktools...

Good Morning All, I decided to work on my computer last night, downloading IE 5.01 SP2.
And didn't get it done. Company. I need to aquire one of those caves Bistro goes off to.
Then, I see you all were busy jabberwoking as usual. Looks like stairs and computers don't work well in Murf's house. Instead of ruining your stairs, gently box it all up and send to me. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Bistro, I sure like the way Train set up the goodie disk he sent me. You don't have to worry about losing it to speak of. Who first talked about it? DrMDJ?
Jaak, which step did you miss? Find out yet?
Murf, the reason I am getting excited to build BT is all the things I will be able to do with two units. Storage, Ghosting and saving, an active test bed, constant communications, and the list goes on.
And then I will be able to finish up the BXXXX issue. LOL
I picked up a camera, one of those throw away jobs from Walmart, to take pictures as BT is built. Then I'll scan them and post. That is unless someones's got a digital camera they want me to use. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

I forthwith disavow any knowledge of any actions taken forthwith by any of our readers concerning that poat.... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Hey, not sure if it was in one of the Delta threads, but the question came up referencing backing up data either on a CD-R or CD-RW. I believe I stated that CD-R might be better because a CD-RW can't be read by a regular CD drive. ( Not every one has a burner on their system--wouldn't be able to read your CD-RW). Just to clarify: on the older CD drives, couldn't be done. But with the newer CD drives that are out, many of them have multi-read capability (look for it on the box). They've also improved the surface of CD-RW's in the past year that helps to read them better. (But you still have to close out the session to make the CD readable).

Yes it was and can't remeber where exactly off the top of my head.
This is a good idea though if it is easy and standardized.

Murf,
I seem to recall you mentioning that the next project ought to be building a laptop, right?
In how far is that actually possible? We're not just talking a mobile unit on wheels - installed in a push cart with a gas-driven generator...? https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
You got me interested since my old, trusted TP760E (Pent. 133 MHz) is getting somewhat out of breath, even when only doing homebanking. 3-4 minutes just to power up. Maybe it's time to find a new home for it...?

Hi,
in a sense, film for them digicams is way too expensive.
I mean, of course, memory modules (whatever these things are called one put in them).
https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
and good quality photo printing is more expensive than classic developing on photopaper...
the consumables are what make money for them, see...
