you know, once you network them, you can pump the entire content of the remote machine's drive to a huge zipfile, or even as a direct copy...
I know I done it when I ran trials,
at roughly 8K/s that is going to take a while, but not an eternity.
and then you could play with the 30GB and see what goes when your 40-with-only-32 usable- gets connected to this 370 controller.
my guess is that its data will simply become inaccessible.
(does this make sense?)
.
And once you have solved all these riddles, and got success in all your trials, Then you can call someone names...
You call them names like

Good Morning All, Showers, thunderstrorms, and 50 degree weather predominate north central Texas this morning as a cold front passes through the area.
That's pretty good reporting except this is a hardware forum. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Anyone have any earthshattering pronouncements to make regarding the present state of the art in connection with computers.

you made me laugh bistro....kinda warped but funny...
I tried to install the ultra/fastrak66 card into the athlon machine with no success...it will not load the drivers for some reason....this is not the first time I have had trouble installing a scsi type card into a via board....(both intances were kt-133) I am thinking there must be an issue here someone....I can put the card back into the test machine which is an ali chipset board and it works fine. However I want it to work in the athlon machine I want to be able to put 1 more hard drive into the athlon and with already having 2 cd devices and 1 hard drive and a atapi zip I am booked on IDE channels....I would just go out and buy the promise ata100 controller to accomplish this but I am thinking that it will not work and then I would just be throwing good money out the window. Very frustrated right now. I have 2 constants I will always have my computer and my wife will always have her computer that is considerably less than mine but I could just install this extra drive in her machine but then it would have to be turned on for me to acccess the files that I would store on it which is defeating the purpose...any suggestions? I guess I could always do a firewire drive or something like that....or I could turn the test/gaming machine into a server

ok I am going to buy the promise ata100 card I can get it for 23.00 after price matching with staples.... If it installs with no problems all is well in the world....if not I will be looking for a new motherboard....looking for suggestions....I have the athlon 1.2ghz 200mhz FSB so it has to be compatible with that and preferably also work with the future 1.5ghz chip...I will be needing to attach my dvd drive and cd burner as well as 2 hard drives and an atapi zip drive... so if we can find a board that will support up to 8 ide devices that will be great....I am looking forward to your suggestions.
-
Make the new ata100 card a Siig [what bistro posted] instead of the promise brand.

what about the maxtor brand ata100 card....I can get it for about the same as I can get the siig ultra 66 card.....can you use the siig card without connecting a hard drive to it? could I put my cd burner and my zip drive on on 1 channel of it....and maybe just put one hard drive on the 2nd channel of the card?
-
I have two hd's on two ATA mobo connectors. CD-ROM and CD burner on the other two IDE connections. (All devices on their own channel). The Zip drive is on the Siig card. Works out very well. The system boots up, then the card is recognized and the card's BIOS picks up the Zip attached. Total about a 30 second boot to Windows.
-
Bistro I am having a dense day today....are you saying you have 4 ide plugs on your mobo and you have a hard drive going to each of the first two and a cdrom device going to each of the 2nd 2 or do you have 2 plugs and have the 2 hard drives master/slave and the 2 cd devices M/s on the other channel? and most importantly are you saying you have that zip drive hooked to the siig all by itself? is your siig card the ata100 or the ata66? sorry to be so dense today.
-
Maxtor is a renamed Promise card.
Try the SIIG that bistro is talking about different drivers. Nothing to do with the highpoint we are fighting.
He has a hd as master on each ATA channel on the motherboard.
cdrom is master on primary IDE
cdrw is master on secondary IDE
zip is on siig card.

I have found the siig in both ata66 and ata100 at best buy 39.99 for the 100 and 29.99 for the 66. I am really curious as to why you can hook an atapi drive directly to the siig and with the promise you HAVE to have a hard drive connected to it.

'kaz,
What "scsi type" cards have you had trouble with - regular SCSI cards, or ATA/raid cards? I have 2 x Abit VP6 (VIA 694X) running wich have both accepted 3 or 4 different regular SCSI controller cards - never a problem. Might it be strictly related to one or a few type VIA boards or controller cards?

I have only had experience with 1 real scsi card that was included in an iomega buz pack and the ultra66 pci faux "scsi" and the iomega card was in the pvk7 board I have and it did not install correctly I put it in my old HP pavillion with intel chipset and it worked just fine.....I then tried moved to this ultra card which I have not tried in the pvk7 but I am going to try it tonight for the sake of science....I am going to see if I can borrow the Iomega buz from work to see if it will install in my ecs k7vza.

'Bout time I fixed that door...and put a lock on the computer....
But, yea verily, my mobo has 4 connectors--2x ATA, 2x IDE. The Zip is on the primary of two connectors on the card (Siig ATA 66).

Save your money on the computer lock.
Definately might to invest in a closer for the door. Heat is expensive, procudes favored purchases https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Hear ye Hear YE Sarrkazztic has defeated the deamons of highpointe.
Since I am not a quitter....I decided to try one more experiment with the ultra66 pci card...for those of you that have not been with us for the duration....I bought this card and could not get it to work for anything....I tried it in other machines no go....another member DrMdJ suggested that I flash the cards bios with the FASTRAK66 RAID bios to see what happens I did that and it still did not work...so I was about to give up and buy the ata100 siig card that bistro raves about when I decided one last time lets try this card starting in the PVK7 board that my wife uses...it would install with no splats but the drive was not detected in my computer....so I put it back into the test/gaming machine that I just built...it worked just fine....so then I decided lets try it in the Athlon machine that I bought it for...installed big splat in device manager....bummer...so I looked into what was sharing the IRQ to see if I could fix it....it was sharing with the video card so I reboot and go into bios and uncheck the assign irg to vga and reboot then uninstall the card then reinstall and reboot. NO SPLAT and the drive is detected all is well....everything works great...I just have to purchase another ata66/100 cable to connect the hard drive to it...I currently only have ata33 on it but its working https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
someone told me that even tho this drive is ata100 I should not notice that much of a performance hit at ata66 because you hardly ever truly reach that level on an ata100 drive is this true? even tho stand and rejoice because we are starting to win the battle and maybe the rest of us together we can win the war for GreenGoose1 and all other residents of Vdr land.....(prime rib dinner for celebration gotta run.)

ummm...I happened on this post and would like to add that I have a Promise FastTrak 100 card (IDE RAID Controller) and wanted to let some of you know that if your MB supports UDMA100, the just stick with that...
I bought my card because I thought it would speed things up a bit, when it didn't do that much...so now I'm selling it...

"chief, what happened?"
Chief went ashen, because he knew it would be pointless to try get to the horizon, and explain.
izz good thing Arthur Dent was there...
Chief was blissfully unaware of THAT, tho.
Guess we'll never know why "they" asked, "chief, what happened?"
One wonders why we have this saying

For what it's worth, I personally have never had a problem with the Promise Ultra 100s, VIA chipset or not. But ya really don't want it (or any other controller card) sharing an IRQ. Being a bus mastering device, and of the nature it is, it is something that really needs to be on it's own.
As for the Ultra66 vs Ultra100 (since it was me who said it wouldn't matter in the first place), here's the point. The current state of hard drive technology (let alone cd, dvd, cdrw zip) is such that on any sort of sustained basis they just can't read/write data fast enough to take advantage of (potential) ata100 speeds. Drives generally aren't even going to max out with ATA66 on any sustained basis. All else being equal, the only time drives are going to hit the ata100 levels is if the data resides in the hard drive's onboard cache. And such is not often the case. And when you talk about multitasking, read/write access patterns, channel sharing, device contention, etc, etc, these factors only serve to slow things down even more and make ATA100 capabilities less important. Remember, the ata100/ata66 capabilities has to do with "maximum burst" transfer capabilities. It is not the sustained or continuous speeds that are being talked about (or guarenteed).
ATA66 over ATA33 (or less) is significant, as drives can on a fairly regular basis exceed the ata33 speeds. Still it does depend on what apps one runs (etc), but...
And spindle speed matters a lot. Here you are dealing with something directly related to the drives ability to fetch and store data off/on it's platters. You will benefit far more from having a 7200 rpm drive over a 5400rpm drive than an ata100 drive over an ata66.

Oh go ahead and power it up. You'll be OK....snicker, snicker...
Seriously, that's a good card and glad you fixed the problem. Go for it. Like DrMDJ said though, you are far better off with a 7200 and will see a definite performance increase with one far more than with an ATA card/ATA mobo alone. Combine both and you've got a good setup.
