Anyway....it's nice to take a break from work....
It's probably much better to mod a case after you've put it together. Best to know where all the components are located first before cutting away. Brings up a point for would-be modders--take everything out before slicing and dicing the metal on the case. Tiny shards of metal can cause big problems. Plan the mod thoroughly; draw sketches; measure twice/cut once; don't be in a hurry.
...and, just as important, use the right tools. Don't use excessive force - the steel these cases are made of will often bend a lot before giving in. You'll end up with some nasty edges - then keep some bandages around.. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

As Bistro said, there is a lot to be said for first making sure everything is put together and working before putting the system "under the knife". The flip side of that is of course (again, as Bistro said) that everything does need to be taken apart/out if you are going to be cutting. Those little peices of metal (and metal dust) will raise holy hell if they get where they shouldn't (which is anywhere).
And as Kallikru said, round the edges after cutting.
A dremel tool with suitable attachments is invaluable.

All right all ready - I received an In Win S500 case today. Came through in good shape with the exception of one front cover "post latch" which was broken off at the base and easily repairable with a high tech glue. Had a bag of parts - all sorts of thingys - looks like feet for the case, various screws, rails etc. Has a 250W PS and fan with another fan case on the bottom front. Wife said I couldn't sleep with it. Danged it (this phrase for Jaak). https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Congrats on 6000 Bistro....I know some of them were very helpful to me....GG1 my wife said the same thing no sleeping with the new case.....ha ha......try to resist the urge of putting the ram and the 40 gig drive into the inwin case and seeing if it will boot without the mobo and cpu..Things are shaping up looks like you should be getting ready around the end of next week maybe?

DrMDJ, After figuring what was going into BT, the 250W PS was more than adequate. This computer will be set for data collection and experimentation of methods and procedures. The next one will be the chinga daddy rock of a computin' motin gater. But enough of that, we gotta build BT first.
Sarkazztic, when all the components are here we will start building. No rush. I want BT to come up just like the QoHs did. You push the power button and wallah - you are operating.

two days ago I saw its cheaply made 230watt PSU suddenly give the ghost (this case was around 30 months old, and had, IMHO, been overtaxed. It was upgraded before, see. originally had a celeron slot one...)
Anyway, PSU died.
this happnened after I removed his burner, SBlive, DDR video monster card (replaced it with 32Mb geforce mx200)
and after I had replaced his hard drive with same model.
everything ran dandily, and a day after that, it won't power on when I plugged in the strip and flipped the master switch on. = cold start.

well, thing is, I put a 145 watt PSU in to test mobo, and it runs.
(have pulled 2*128 after the first full boot, so as not to kill this weak PSU)
this machine has to be sold, so I have ordered two 300W PSU... (it isn't going out with only 145W in it)

last saturday I was at the shop ordering the stuff for his new machine, and I saw a two weeks old 350Watt give the ghost, after tranport to shop, and replacing hardware.
this guy has a need for many hard disks...
anyway, he had ordered an epox screamer to replace his old system
out went older amd athlon 500 (slot A)
in went epox (like mine), and high end athlon
256DDR, and a geforce 2 mx200.
fsb was set, power added
the thing did not power on.
they tried PSU on old and yet another mobo, still dead, tried new PSU, up it went
we discussed power on requirements.
(for instance, look at min load on GG1 PSU,
+5V=4A to max27, but 3.3 is zero to max.)
Anyway, QUESTION
I wonder if these things can't stand bumps...
why do they just stop working?

still wondering why they just die.
matter of fact, I think he saw the configurating troubles start after the burner was added, and when he recently went for this siluro, it didn't help.
BEFORE it died, I noticed his BIOS settings were all messed up. The 230W PSU may have been dying/causing problems for him.

Now this one moves more air. 38dB though.

GG1: I broke one of those off within 2 days of receiving the same case https://discussions.virtualdr.com/. Gotta be careful removing that front panel. After pressing in the tabs on the side, it'll open like a door (swings to the right a little) , but you must be gentle when removing it off the right-side mounts. I know you are quite excited--so are we. But step back, take a Valium, do it one step at a time, make a list of each step and build slowly. Then, when the whole thing is up and running, and you download a shareware program that completely screws up the entire registry, you can post more questions in the Win 98 forum....we'll be there too. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
BTW Train: Yes, my fingers are sore. But I'm working on a voice recognition program that'll work for VDr. Will be able to dictate posts rather than type. Problem right now is that it recognizes "Uh..." as "Yes, definitely".
Example: Change the jumpers (yes, definitely), to (yes, definitely) the J2 connection (yes, definitely), I think. I (Yes, definitely) hope that (yes, definitely) it will solve your problem.

What are you planning of putting into BT - good ol' '98 SE...I hope..?
Just spent a night in the company of WinMe - one of those nights you'll never forget. A friend of mine has the same Compaq Presario (5861) as I have, favourably bought as a home PC with the help of the company I work for. His machine badly needed a reinstallation, so I decided to do the installation on my own machine on a spare disk, which would then be copied to his disk.
Finally, after 5 hours - at 2.30 AM, I had everything up and working as I wanted it. I then rebooted one last time....and everything was w r o n g: Video drivers couldn't be found, no sound, BSOD popping up re£peatedly - couldn't even boot to safe mode anymore. After some screaming and fussing I decided to clean out the disk once more (5th time, I think) and switch over to -98 SE. At 4 PM the machine was running again and I was ready for bed.
I then spent a couple of hours this morning installing the rest of the programs and brought the machine over to my friend at noon.
I have a feeling the trouble can be traced to a combination of Presario and WinMe. CPQ puts a lot of tricks into those Presarios, and I think that makes it very difficult for them to work with anything else than what has been preinstalled. Fx. to make the 3D sound work CPQ has put something into the bios itself.. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ - and on top of that you have to install an additional 50 MBs worth of drivers ect. to make that sound thing work.
I'll stick with '98 SE & W2K....and I'm not buying any more Presarios in this life. Only home-built once get into my house. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Seems I always get "difficult" machines to work on.
Like I once said, it all interacts.
I am at times at a complete loss as to what causes the problems I notice.
Some get solved by installing win3x/95 drivers in 98SE machines. Go Figure.
What I most often notice, is that the original "builder/box shifter" doesn't bother to optimise/properly configure the machine they sold. And to me, optimal has to have stability. And I don't mean "fail safe".
I wish I knew a lot more, since I may often be able to notice a problem, but seldom can I pinpoint the exact cause of it... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

at epox first boot (I was flipping switch on strip).
by the time I get in front of screen, its going into winME and suddenly shuts off.
at new attempts, drive lights dont come up, no beeps, no hard disk spins.
it ain't heat.
it ain't CPU, (tried other)
it aint PSU (tried other)
it aint vidcard (tested)
it ain't hard disk (tested in other puter)
apparently, the motherboard just died.
PSU and CPU fans spin until they are shut off by system itself (we see no BIOS screens, no screen whatever, cpu do not warm up, initialise)
going to take an old PCI vidcard to shop to try what it does with it.
tomorrow, replacement mobo should be in.
funeral is next wedneday.
dangit, I hate to have to ask for RMA.

Good Morning All, Unexpected things this weekend - like tree limbs coming down. Had to work and didn't get to the PCI card until Sunday night. The card would not pick up the hard drive. It could not find the Operating System. The card was installed and drivers loaded. Reseated adapter cable and PCI card. Same results each time. The computer works in the original configuration. No problem. Since the symptom is the same each time I tried to bring the computer up I have a feeling I'm missing something on the configuration. Called Train with same results. The only difference between our systems is I use two recovery disks and he doesn't. Went back and studied on Jaak's posts on the subject. Decided I would take Train's suggestion and wait until BT is built to fix this. But if any of you have any ideas, I sure would like to hear them.
Regarding BT, the MOBO, cpu and cpu fan should be in this week. On the cpu went with 1.1ghz TBird for $95.00, the ASUS A7V for $67.00, upgraded the fan to a higher rpm, the total for all three plus shipping came to $179.00. Need to get a monitor and audio card. Found a SB live for $26.00. Looks like with a 17 inch monitor included, the system will come in less than a $1000.
Had an inventory at work this weekend so will be busy today too. Will be back as much as I can.

Quick question....my new board supports ata100 drives....should it recognize the new 40 gig I just bought....I will try it when I get home from work tonight but wanted to see what everyone has to say....also I have a tip for those buying computer items....If staples has it and you can find a better price anywhere on the internet (excluding auction sites) they will price match it....I got a 7200 rpm 40 gig maxtor ata100 drive today for 76.00 dollars...pretty stoked about that one. They have matched everything I have taken in there ..got a linksys befsr41 router for 79.oo and a 17in monitor 2 years ago for 129..when that was an outstanding price....

You have the blue connector on the mobo? If so just use the 80 wire ribbon. You should be ready. You did install the ata100 drivers, didn't you?

I installed win2k and then the via 4in1 drivers....that is all I have done....when I boot the machine it detects the drive that I have in there now as ata100 (maxtor 20gig that is going to be a slave to this new 40)so am assuming that either the via drivers or the win2k setup took care of it for me because the drivers for the mobo are still shrink wrapped. Hey, can you guys take a look at a post I have over in the win2k forum about setting up a dual boot if win2k is already installed....I want to play some games in win98se but do not want to do all of the reinstalling if I do not have to....

you got a installation shhet with card?
it should tell you that when (any?) other drive is on primary IDE, you may not be able to boot from highpoint.
then, in mobo BIOS, you select to boot from SCSI...
But, in ctrl + H options screens, you have to set which drive you wanna boot from, just as well.
next.
the drive detection IS NOT done from MOBO BIOS.
it happens after mobo has done full POST and ESCD load.
hence, you MUST update ESCD in BIOS
could be you should plug the card in other slot.
(a non shared IRQ slot is best)
remember, ctrl + H (for highpoint...)
also, the card will normally detect the drive at its "natural" settings.
(the jumper we talked about is mighty important.)
what I still suggest is this.
connect the identical drive you have to card.
clone part from IDE to part on highpoint
(WD ezdrive should work with highpoint)
iow, WD tools partition, and then do filecopy
if you dont do it the first time, it somehow remembers you didn't want new disk as boot drive, and copy option don't come back, not until you redo partitioning of new disk.
its all in the advanced screens.
don't just connect your working drive to card.
please clone.

and, IMHO, this is most likely the cause.
you see, I seen that happening as well.
for instance.
I do drive prepare on a working puter.
I transfer the freshly partitioned/formatted drive to other puter, and the drive shows one measly MEGABYTE difference when I check with fdisk, but it won't work.
BIOS and IDE controllers differ.
(chipset and drive translation.)
hence, I suggest to clone part to part.
then remove old system disk to get it out of the loop, and try boot.
when is weekly subject gonna revitalise?

And in this lull, we have until all the components are in for BT, is a good time to browbeat these computer heads, these experts of cyberspace, these nuts who spend so much time explaining to us less informed nuts, these wonderful sharing caring people who give so much of themselves to help the rest of us in times of need. If it has a working antivirus on the machine and the client does not do the required updates to the virus definitions or does not enable full time protection.....then it would be their own fault.....as well as downloading suspicious looking files and attachments from the internet without scanning them for virus first...
