Tell me you are going to cut out that big e and put some clear acrylic in there and put a big green light inside it..Sounds cool....I am going to be doing some modding on this new one I'm building too...black light inside and see through top...I saw something where they cut the top out of a cd drive and put clear plastic over it too so that you could see the inside of the drive and the disk spinning....Ideas???

Thought you were looking for RAID? But if you set your sights on an MB that doesn't have the extra controllers you want, why not just invest in a $30 Promise Ultra100 (or similar card) and throw that in? You'll have the PCI slots to spare. Got a machine in the other room with the hard drives on a promise U100 and all the cd-type devices on the motherboard ata66 controllers (which are more than any cd device can use). Or am I missing something in what you just said above?

Hi All, Another long day. Glad it's over.
In answer to your question DrMDJ, after reading all your and the others comments, I find that maybe I was shooting for more MOBO than I needed. It is awful easy to impulse buy something better than you need. Yes I would like a RAID, but I don't need one. What I need is the most for my money, stability, and dependability. A powerful PC, but no glitz. A lean mean computing machine.
That does not mean I am not like everyone else and wouldn't want to be at the top of the heap, but to do that I would have to build at least two machines a year realistically at least.
For all of you just how much computer does a person need? The answer is whatever he wants and that the wallet can afford.

question to epox users
can Vcore be lowered somehow?
people may remember I got freezes with an atlon 1133 on an abit (which I later returned)
to get a good and stable system I HAD to set a lower Vcore (thx train, you posted the solution), which the abit allowed me to do.
Now, on the epox 8k7a+ (DDR and raid) I got instead of the abit, the athlon ran without problems, even when bios reports the same too high Vcore, and I cannot lower it???
btw, my fave retailer (he's a hardware "nut" doing his own stresstests...) does not recommend ECS K7VZA for high end athlons.
He tells me it gets issues when stressed too much, but they are rock solid with durons.
(w/i true, I am gonna be building a yet another machine with a duron for friends.)
As a matter of fact, he won't sell them with athlon on them.
(he uses Aopen for athlons)

Lost my Compaq Presario 5360 last night and this morning couldn't bring it up. Same symptoms this morning as last night. Will post in separate thread.
Trying to narrow down my choice of MOBO and CPU, but have been slowed down a bit time wise with problems at work (still in manual mode and working 10 to eleven hours a day)and had to finish up the paperwork on the custody of three granddaughters. Daizy: You could overclock that Cel 400 to around 500, if the BIOS supports changing the FSB. it can go higher, but you'd probably lose stability. Might be better to consider a mobo/CPU upgrade.

You might see a bit of a performance increase, perhaps a slight speed increase if you oc'ed that chip. IMHO not really worth the trouble.

Sorry to hear about your Compaq problem, but that's certainly trivial in the grander scheme it would seem. The won court battle is great news and surely was a hell of a rollercoaster/headache. Motherboard's and PCs are low on the importance scale compared to grandkids.

You can adjust the vcore on the 8K7A+ (and the DDR SDRAM voltage). There are jumpers on the motherboard for this (JP2 for vcore,, JP3 for DDR SDRAM).
By the way... I have seen (and had Epox admit) that there can be a variance (on the high side) of about 5% for the reading for vcore vs the actual voltage. In other words a voltage (actual) of 1.75 can get displayed as like 1.83. I've seen this be the case with other boards as well.

Jaak, the vcore voltage on my 8k7a can be adjusted with jumper JP2, but it can only be raised, in 0.1 increments up to 0.4.

so its a misreading of actual values... and erring on the high side.
hmmm, the abit was reporting values like 1.84, and actually making it overheat (I got hangs), so it must have reported actual values, whereas the epox reports false highs?
Well, the epox 8k7a+ don't hang the CPU, but I wanted to find out how to set to a lower value, like 1.65V, which the jumpering cannot do.
I'm at ease now, thanks to DrMDJ's report.
I was a bit worried about this, see.
in regards to the new goshling, I do love this board since I NEED many connectors.
And, my hotrod card again moved into the iwill VD133.
most folks don't need what I need.

No kiddin' , on my VP6 board the vcore is ALWAYS shoving 0.05 volts more that what I intend. So this could mean that I'm too cautious. I wonder who designed the measuring equipment - VDU? https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Well, if you're seeing a vcore reading of 1.83/1.84 then 5% lower rule puts the actual vcore at 1.75. That's right at spec for the 1.13 Athlon.

Just looked it up--that Compaq should have a Quantum Bigfoot 10gb hd. If you don't need all that capacity, pick up a 5 to 8 gig.

But here's the deal--it's as DrMDJ says in the OD3 thread...throw in shipping costs and then look at the price. Yikes! If this system is just going to be a spare, or a gaming machine for the grandkids, might as well compare prices for a bigger one (along with rebates)--pays to shop.

Ok I don't know if I'm supposed ask questions here but you seem to be talking on Motherboards with Raid on board amongst other things...I have been looking around for a new M/B and I have this one in mind ABIT KG7 with Raid on Board... I was under the assumption Raid was a chip or something that allowed extra IDE ports like a promise card,
My dumb question is what is raid and what is it for?
I have a CD Burner,CD Rom, and 2 Hard Drives, I want to buy a DVD Rom and 1 extra Hard Drive so you can see I need at least 3 places for IDE devices...I guess I could take out the Rom and just use either the DVD Rom and or the Burner and just get 2 bigger drives but I don't see the point as the ones I have are still in really good condition
If I am wrong and raid is not what I think is. What do you look for on a M/B to give you more IDE ports. I have noticed that a lot of motherboards are standard with the 2 IDE ports

Actually, this article explains it more succinctly than I would. (In a nutshell, you are spreading the data over multiple disks and/or making mirror images of the data--increases speed/performance and will have data backed up "automatically". That's a very, very simplistic explanation, believe me) https://discussions.virtualdr.com/. Not for the "average" user...
As far as a mobo and those "extra" IDE's, the Abit SA6R is a good example (Pictured here)--notice it has two orange ATA connections (for the hard drives--up to 4) and two (blue) IDE connections (for up to 4 devices), for a total of 8-instead of the usual four. Article on this mobo also explains RAID capability.
