Any chance you have a webcam or digital camera? Might be neat to have some "visuals" through this project. Also might make things easier to understand for people reading along.

GG1,
One things for sure, we need to try and come up with a scheme to safeguard against loosing/damaging any more threads. I don't know that we ever got the chipset one back fully. It was a killer when that one go lost. I notice people have been posting new items in some of the older threads. Sure don't want to see them get blown away.

Mrphhh, sorry I'm late, class, had some salvaging to do trying to save data from a crashed disk and a failed raid 1 - still don't know why the mirror failed (2 x 20 GB partitions were not mirrored!), but luckily most of the data was stored away on an older inactive disk - glad I didn't reformat that one. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Carry on while I get myself up to date...

Good Morning All,
Glad you could make it kallikru. Sorry about the problem.
DrMDJ, You are 100% right on losing "stuff". Train and I have been talking about this very thing and backing it all up. Enough so I'm going to buy a burner. When you stop and think about chipsets and controllers and how important they are.... Well, we don't need to be losing anything.

GG1,
There also may need to be some posting guidelines or things we at least watch. I don't think there was ever a full explaination as to what causes threads to have problems, but there were suggestions that it related to the number of posts, the use of embedded graphics in posts, etc. Are there things we want to do or not do, or do we just wing it and figure if things go boom we'll have a backup somewhere? What was the final VDR input? Has any action been taken on their part to try to prevent this in the future?

DrMDJ, I never did get a reply from Housen from the Email I sent some time ago and never heard back from SRJ. So I cannot answer that question. We will just have to back up each days posts and take care of ourselves.
I figure it has been fixed. All we have to remember is anything is subject to failure. What's your ideas on this? https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

No knock (truely) to any one at VDR, but my guess is the problem may well not be fixed, nor is the cause of the problem really understood/known. Maybe Steve or someone can tell us for sure.
It would be nice to know if there was "something" specific that can trigger the problem, but... Short of that the only option I guess I see really is to take self backups each day. I think graphics and such (used prudently) can often be helpfull in threads like these. I would like to see those still be allowed. I also don't think its best if we have to start saying to keep posts to a certain size unless we know it does cause a problem. People need to say what they need to say.

The graphics are needed and if I remember correctly the threads we had trouble with did not have as near as many graphics as some we did not lose.
My opinion of the problem is that we hit a period of time that we hit overload on the site. I also think there were some changes being made to improve the site.
Steve will be reading this most likely and keep us abreast from his end I'm sure. If not we'll go looking for him https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

What's your recommendation on a good burner. After talking to Train and posting the question to others thought you might have an idea. We have to have good backup from now on.
maxx and all, I will have many pictures of the this project. If a digital camera is within the the budget and it just might be the way prices are falling that would work pretty well.

I was on another forum and out of the clear blue got hit with a BSOD. Never had that happen before.
Viper, prices are going down and Intel is going to drop 50% according to CNet. So that should help. Found Win98SE for $99 today. OEM version.

Yeah, I heard/read about the 50% cut somewhere. Maybe it's time to consider trying a P4 once the chipsets that will support DDR-RAM come out (this fall?) - provided they don't drown in lawsuits..?

Good Morning All,
Been getting ready for the two new threads. These will start later today. Operation Delta 3-001 and Weekly Subject - Chipsets and Controllers will be the titles.
maxxmilian, Should have caught the "gag" but missed the fine print. LOL
kallikru, I do not believe prices have bottomed out as yet, but in looking at the markets now is a good time to start buying with one condition. Get familiar with the components market. We can all help each other by advising one another as to what you find each week. This would give us an independent view to compare with say Price Watch.com, Sharkey's, etc. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
sarkazztic, After building 15 units, you are not only going to have an experience, but we will want your comments also. Ever been drafted? You have been now. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Thanks Train, for the info.
I am going to be able to save the threads intact, including being able to click on the links in the individual posts. I will back up at least once a day. As a result we cannot lose more than a half a day to a days work. And we can reconstruct that easily enough. Both new threads will be done this way. The original Operetion Delta Threads and Weekly Subject Threads will be done the same way.
This will be the start of a quick reference and resources library for our members. Will take a while to set up. Got this idea from Train in case we need to blame anyone later on. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
The challenge is to have fast retrieval of information.
For example, Bistro explained how to attach a fan to a cpu. Can anyone dig that out quickly? SDTech had a short explanation on burners. How long will it take you to find?
Think on this and if you have any ideas to further this effort, please post.

I'm a new member of the site so I'm not quite sure where or if I fit in here, but I'm gonna put my 2 cents worth in anyway. (Egad, why does a keyboard not have a cents symbol.....!?!?!) VEE DOC ROCKS,BY THE WAY---LOVE IT, and spending a good portion of my online time here. Anyway, this post comes courtesy of my recent vintage homegrown system. It is a dual boot 98SE/W2K box, Partition Magic along for the ride as well, with more OS's to be added shortly. (Whadda I feel like playing with and learning about today!?!?!?!) Three things I absitively and posilutely hate--Windows ME and America Online, viruses that they are. Packard Bell would be the third--have you checked out their website lately?! BWAAAA HAAAA HAAAA HAAAA HAAAA. What a pathetic joke--yeah I made the innocent first timer Packard Bell mistake myself. SHUT UP!!!STOP LAUGHING!!!PLEASE!!! Which brings me back to my new system. I did my homework this time around, determined not to make the same mistake twice. So, with no further ado, my system consists of Asus A7M266 MoBo, T'Bird 1.2 GHz CPU, Maxtor Diamond Max 60 series 40 Gigabyte HD, 256 MB of PC 2100 RAM (already wishing I had 512 MB, poweruser that I am), ATI Radeon VE graphics card, Creative 56K Modem Blaster, Creative MP3+ sound card (hardware identical to X-Gamer Live--software bundle is the only difference between the two), Plextor 12-10-32RW CD burner, Antec midtower case w/300 Watt power supply, HD cooler, with CD-ROM and HD from the Packard Smells as slave drives, and 19" monitor, with a DirectPC (Phone uplink return version--too many DSL Reports horror stories of the 2 way system being not quite ready for prime time) broadband dish to come, since it's the only high speed internet option available in my area. See, I told ya I did my homework!!! Anyway, I built this system from the ground up with no help, so based on that I feel ok about jumping headlong into this thread.

Rednek,
Before gg1 get his eyes open I'll hurry and welcome you aboard. Anyone may give their two cents - this is, after all, an open board.
We expect the less experienced to ask the questions and the more experienced to answer the best they can. Hopefully everybody learns something.
These threads may sometimes seem like a club gathering but that is not the case. You could say people are just "waiting for the next question" and so embark on some smaller off-topic explanations and discussions - it's often quite fun. Just blend in...

If I ever need more than 4 IDE devices, I can always get an IDE controller card for 1 or both channels. I got the A7M b/c I wanted the AMD 761 Northbridge controller chip along with the VIA 686B Southbridge chip, and of course the fact that the A7M is one of the highest rated boards for a T'bird processor definitely influenced my buying decision. An expensive board, but very very good.
