I definately like Bistro's idea of "consolidating" all the OD threads in to just the useful stuff (as a reference). And what a guy to volunteer to do it https://discussions.virtualdr.com/.

DrMDJ, I was being vague especially on the business end of it. Don't know anything about it. Also, the intangables of what happens should we pull it. Don't know what will happen. There are a number of people that reference to it and from not only this forum. I believe that this is bigger than any one person as far as a decision is concerned. I was also vague as far as Housen goes because he has the responsibility of this site.
If we have not heard anything from Steve or Housen by tomorrow to the contrary, then the thread will be retired. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Bistro, Had not received anything up till work time. Will check again. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

You guys just aint gonna believe this... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Now that I have this new HP, I figured I would beef up the RAM situation, seeing as how I got extra sticks now. It came with 128, sharing with video, whick I felt was a little weak for WinME. So into the case I go. I installed a 128MB stick of Kensington in the one available DIMM slot. Closed her back up and turned it on. I got NO DISPLAY!!!
Panic and dejavu sets in of course. I go back and reseat the RAM and fire it up again. Still no display. Crack the case again and remove the new stick and pray that it starts with the original configuration. It does...WHEW!!!
Can't leave it alone, of course, so I then install a 64MB stick and it works. I now read 192MB RAM installed. OK, what does all this mean, other than maybe I shouldn't be playing with this stuff,...this stick of 128MB looks to be bad. This stick was installed in the Emachine when all hell broke loose. So I guess we can add that to the list of potential problems with the Emachine. I should note that during the ordeal I had tried to boot the Emachine with just it's original RAM and it still won't work, but I thought you would like to know about this.
BTW, all the RAM involved is PC100.
I'm really starting to hate hardware. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

GG1,
I get ya now. Guess we'll see what happens (soon).
Maxx,
Most current chipsets have special circuitry that queries the various system busses, including the memory bus, at poweron. If any module returns a UIAM (Used In A Emachine) signal the system will immediately halt, having determined that the component must be bad. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Goose. Thanks for all the info in these threads. Gonna miss them though....
Max, got an Idea. Take a stick of Ram, put it in the Emachine and bootup, see if it will do anything at all...
Atleast we could fill this Delta thread up with Info, before shutting it down, Couldn't we???

Dodge,
Thanks for the suggestion, but I tried that awhile back. I have three sticks of RAM 32MB,64MB and 128MB. I tried each of them in the emachine and in different slots. Each is a different manufacturer, too. Still getting the wrong BIOS beep codes and no display. Looking to dig into it in a couple weeks.
Also, thanks for the Deltas guys, it was fun and educational. My prediction is that it will return in some form in the future. You mad scientists will be elbows deep in a new building project soon I'm sure. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Now that we have gotten through all that stuff, this is what we will try. We will deal with a subject a week on building a computer. Should a week not be long enough for anyone subject, we will extend the time for it. Conversely we will shorten the time frame for a subject if need be.
Now if someone wants to build a computer from scratch, we will change over and help build a computer. Then go back to where we left off on weekly subjects. Although we cannot help more than one person at a time, anyone else wanting to build could come along at the same time and build their own following the guidelines given. Individual questions asked by either a new member or an old hand would be handled as before.
An important point to remember is we will maintain our flexibility.
The most important thing anyone reading this should remember is that we are here for you and that no question is a dumb question. Especially new people to this subject, why? Because you are just getting started maybe and have a lot of questions that need answers. There is no such thing as a dumb question if you don’t know the answer.
In my own case, I came to VirtualDr needing help. My computer just barely got me here. Now it’s running smoother than it ever has. I asked questions. And did I get answers. You know what I have learned? Just how much I don’t know. I am still learning.
Train, Bistro, Her Most Eminent Charming Witty Gracious – oh balderdash – The Queen of Hearts, and a whole lot of others will be here. Let’s see, and I always hate to do this, JTDoom, Snarfll, Kallikru, DrMDJ, Dodge, maxxmillian, jerrycttech, Goldust, Mosaic, Theoran, TrishA, ‘cause I can’t remember everyone off the top of my head that’s helped in the past. But you know who you are.
If, anyone as we go along has got suggestions on how to improve what we are doing, by all means make it known. We want to make Operation Delta the best it can be and Virdr the best on the net.

My thought for the first week would be to discuss the goal in building, tools needed, safety, test equipment, a general outline of how the project to be accomplished, then a components list/costs.
For example: How do you use an inexpensive vom? What is the proper size screw driver to use? Can I use magnetized tools?
Also the subject per week would run from Saturday to Saturday.
And to have fun while we are doing this. You have to be careful about burnout.

How about the following topics?
1) Considerations (Do I have the skill? Pep-talks. What to be aware of before you start.)
2) Preparations (What do I need?)
3) Shopping (might be split into several sections..?) - what to look for.
4) Assembling - make a plan. How to test.
5) SW - installation. What do I really need?
6) Maintenance and upgrading.
By the way, maxx, that was Mark Twain who said "The rumors of my death..."

I had already begun the arrangements.

Ya and you probably knew too QoH. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ What would you suggest first since you did it first. We are seeing some good ideas, but I tend to lean toward what Train suggested first since this has got to be covered and it would help how many others now. This would also give time to line up our subjects and give everyone that wants to time to make a contribution.
There are many members who have built that could probably add things that they went through. The little how to's and hands on thingys that are never covered but that are important.

hi booyz and gaalz
this tidbit has been sitting in one of my drives and I never thought I'd post it.
it was something I copied from the intel fora when those I participated in were still up.
that was about a year ago,
but still, you can have a look at it, and have a laugh or two.
the question was;
Where can i find info on each of intels processors. Comparing each chip to the next one up the line ?
a member called Megabrain put this up.

Jaak, I can always count on you to hand out alot of reading. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Train, Trying to catch up on Emails this morning and yours are "interesting". https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Still trying to get the time to work on indexing the Delta threads. Slow going at the moment but it is needed so a person can find what they need more quickly.
We will start our "Weekly Subjects" with surge protection (how you can protect your computer from outside disruptions). And what better way to start than with a question.
What is an electrical spike and how can it affect my computer?
As always your comments and questions are welcome and more than that needed so others can see what worked for you and others may have an answer to your questions. ::

Spike - A large momentary increase in the amount of voltage or amperage supplied to the circuitry.
Surge - An unusually large increase in power coming into the circuit. ex: Lighting
With a supply of 120V the powersupply outputs 12V and 3V. But with a spike of 240v it outputs 24V and 6V which will fry a motherboard and other components in a computer.

What are the causes of surges and spikes. How can I protect myself from them?

Train, I did not realize that lightning between clouds could cause problems. In fact there's several things I learned from those articles.
While we're at it what about the input phone line or cable connection. What should be looked out for there?
