Bistro makes me think of an issue. For those who seem to leave their systems on 24/7, obviously they must be content to rely on any surge/power protection they have implemented to weather them through a storm (no pun intended). Frequently they must not be around when a storm hits and therefore can't unplug anything. You hear all the time (here and other places) when people are talking about leaving their systems on how they'll be on for weeks (or more) at a time. Odds are a storm or two caught them by surprise. Obviously they don't fear any direct strikes. Perhaps the next time the subject comes up about leave-on-or-turn-off one of the arguments for turning off should be protection from storm related hits.
It seems ironic if one of the reasons people who advocate leaving-on do so is to reduce wear and tear from component stress, contraction and expansion of the on/off cylcles, yet the wear and tear of a massive electrical charges entering their systems presents no worry.

Good point DrMDJ.
Now more questions. Does anyone know how these rolling blackouts will affect the electrical power input to homes when it hits. And what happens to input electrical power in a brownout since we all stand a chance of experiencing them. How can we protect our selves in these scenarios?

Aside from a good kick-in generator, pack up everything and move to the Antartic....

I hate to think of the voltage jolt that goes through a major grid when they institute a rolling blackout.
One brownout was enough to tell me I never want to see another. It happened while I was at work and everyone home tried to fix the computer before dad got home. The answer to correct the problem was a overinstall of window. As I lost count of how much stuff could not be found when windows tried to startup. And people with the recovery/restore type disks , well they will lose everything they had, when they use them.
But, I have seen some computers go through 10 at work and have no problems yet.

I told people if it happened again, To turn the darn thing off and wait till I get home.
Imperative:Keep you backups up to date!
That way you can do what you have to and not lose stuff. I refuse to fight a problem for days. Not when all I need is maybe 30 minutes https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ or less.

Morning All, I reread this first thread. Once again, what I thought I knew was nothing compared to there is to learn, and of course we are talking about Surge protection. The information here when applied can certainly help your computers, applianceces, and your home. Common sense and a few bucks in this area can save you big bucks when the weather turns bad or your input power hiccups.
Can anyone think of anything we've missed here?
Any questions that need to be answered regarding surge protection? https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Just to take this back a bit regarding warning sounds... My UPS has 4 outlets plus the Line in / Line out for the phone. If the power goes off for a second all that happens is the UPS clicks. If the power goes off for any length of time there is a short loud beep every 30 seconds or so (about the same volume as a smoke detector with a low battery). After 10 to 15 minutes depending on the charge of the battery, a loud solid long beep happens. This tells me it's time to shut down because by UPS only has 5 minutes left of power in it to run the system. I can hear this sound from the back yard with the windows closed.. you get my drift. You can also get a cable and software that will shutdown all your applications and then your computer automatically for you. This was a few extra dollars that I couldn't afford as I had already stretched my funds to the best I could afford.

Hi Herring, Since you have had this equipment, how many times has the system needed to use it would you say? https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Hello, folks. Congrats to Operation Delta on your new weekly topic-related format. I predict it will be a big hit! It's good that you started with something as basic as surge protection because I didn't know as much on the subject as I thought I did (e.g.,surges from cloud-to-cloud lightning strikes). Some excellent points were made regarding peripherals. My VCR is hooked to my All In Wonder video card and the VCR was NOT on a surge protector. Fixed that in a hurry! But what about the TV cable attached directly from the wall to my video card, which is also a TV tuner? What can I do about that?

Oops, my bad!!! Seems this question was addressed low down on page 1. I just found it.

Hi Billmanhart, We discussed cable on page 1. Quite a bit of info and if that doesn't answer your question please post back.
Glad you like what your seeing. Thanks. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Goose,
I don't know what is on the menu for this new series, but I have an idea for a short subject. Perhaps the subject of who should be building and who should be buying might be addressed. As we all know this isn't for everyone. I think maybe something on the pros and cons of building versus buying. Maybe a kind of checklist that people can go through to see what their needs are. "Are you a gamer? Just using for internet? Plan on upgrading?" That sort of thing. As you all know, I had wanted to build, but circumstance dictated buy. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Granted, the pros for building outweigh the pros for buying, but folks may like to see these pros spelled out. Just a thought. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
My guess is that you could cover this topic in about one day, maybe two.

Hi maxx, You missed this. Posted last night.

Tomorrow night, (All ready?) We will start Weekly Subject 02 - Safety and Computers
Then we are going into cooling because of summer coming up. Then your idea would be a good introduction to building a computer. I am finding that many of the ideas brought up so far are being able to be worked into our Weekly Subject matter. That just makes it alot better when lots of ideas from different members come in because one person can't do this and do it well without help. (And I appreciate the help personally, being basically lazy. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ https://discussions.virtualdr.com/) Later
